2006 GMC Ext Cab...unlike the majority, my transmission crapped out at 61000; broken weld. Upgraded to heavy duty parts on the rebuild. Am at 84000 and shifting good (damn clunk on 2/3 upshift.

Wondering if this thread is still active? I have 187k on my 2005 Suburban, I'd love to say it's going strong but I've got a code: P0894. Which is for Transmission Component Slipping. To me just driving around town the vehicle seems fine occasionally it will shift hard. I've tried clearing the code and running some Lucas Fluid in the tranny, but it didn't help as the code came back. I've been researching this and it seems that in theory it could be as simple as a 30 dollar solenoid or as expensive as a rebuild (more or less). Most of the people who replaced the solenoids, changed fluid and filter..etc ended up getting a rebuild as that did not fix the issue. Transmission shop wants $650.00 to change out $30.00 part. So I'm considering a local rebuild for $1650.00. Anyone else run into this problem or have any advise?

4L60E with 268,000 rollin' 35's and ZERO issues! Flushed the Tranny at 200k. I don't know the exact history prior to 120k but it was obviously well maintained...

I did pan/filter service every 25-30k in my 2004 Silverado, had 185k on it when I sold it. Still doing fine. Once in a blue moon slip on starting off. I would say once every 1000 miles. I have 65k on my 2013 Silverado with the 4L60E. Just did my second pan/filter change. Do that service every 30k (DON'T DO FLUSHES) and I've had good luck.

Listen man, those two solenoids are so cheap from Advance Auto, and they are so easy to install. If you can drop the pan you can do those solenoids. Might as well give it a shot before spending any money. Hard shifting...that could indeed be the solenoids. Do yourself a favor and give it a shot. F those guys who want you to spend all that money.

I've got 170,000 on my 2003 Z71 4 x 4 extended cab. I bought the truck with 75,000 on it and did a fluid change right away, then every 50,000 after that. It still runs like the day I bought it. I'm selling that truck now because I just bought a 2013 to replace it. Let's hope this one is even better than the last one!

My 60 made it to 190k. 65k of that with a 6.0.

217,000 on the trans in my 04, did one dealer flush, a pan drop/filter then a slow flush when my trans lines started leaking. New lines, bigger cooler, topped up and never had an issue, even towing.

Mine has 227000 on it, and i just replaced the Torque converter. Well I am about to. I plan on rebuilding the one that's in the truck and throwing another in that I just rebuilt for a guy which he never picked up. His was and 06 and had 170000 on it. If you change the fluid religously and drive easy, the 4l60e is a good transmission. Not bad to tow with, however for heavier stiff I would prefer the 4l80e.

 

From what I've seen and heard, these things have a life expectancy of about 150000km if you take into consideration the people that don't know how to maintain a vehicle or a transmission.

I have a 96 chevy tahoe has 220,000 its 21 years old still going strong till i put a corvette servo amd boom she was chirping in second but then 3 and 4 gear gave out i did the fluid change around around when she was 16 years old  since then ive been giving it hell lol 

now that i was rebuilding mechanic said he had to get another tranny dat mine was shit there was no rebuilding it lol moroal of the story dont put performance parts on a high mileage wont last long but it was fun suv chirping in secon amazing just

 

leave alone abuse it every now and then no performance parts doe  and will last long i felt like my original 96 tranny would of made it another 4 year easy never felt like it was slipping or nothing when i re did the fluid i used castrol syntehic fyi ill upload photos of the trashed original tranny rip my beloved it friend

97 k1500 350 5.7 4x4 f44 14 bolt semi float rear differential.

 

4l60e is original and one of the last one piece cases.

 

As of 4/12/2018 original engine, transmission, rearend, etc has 210k miles

 

At 180k had the p1870 code and replaced TCC lockup valve with

Performed a at home full trans flush with 5 gallons of valveline max life atf full synthetic when replacing TCC lockup valve.

 

4l60e is still going strong! Has towed 4K lbs through mountains and daily driven all with 33” 60lb BFG K02.

 

factory steel pan and factory external cooler. I installed transmission temp gauge in pan.

 

Normal temps are:

140f interstate no load outside 60f

175f interstate no load outside 100f

205f -215f interstate towing 4K outside 85f

235f hottest I’ve seen towing 4K 15mph up long dirt road.

Pulled over and let idle to cool down.

1999 GMC Sierra heavy half ton Z71 extended cab 5.3.. Have no clue which transmission is in it. Purchased the truck with 210 on it and it just turned 249.. Changed all oils when I purchased. Flushed the transmission and using synthetic with an recommended additive.  Been towing a boat that weight in the 2500 range to the keys and back and also a trailer that weight 8000 + gear, with no issues. I'm about to change the transmission oil again, but this time I see no need to flush the system. 

 

I read this threat cause, we're considering a long six month camping trip out west, and I"m wondering should I trust my current truck, motor and transmission, or should I purchase a newer truck.?

I have a 2001 silverado1500 and i got 306000 mi out of before its first rebuild.i beat the hell out of this transmission from racing to hauling.i changed the fluid and filter every 12mo on the dot.the 4L60e is the best transmission out there.

2001 Yukon with 195,000 and a 2005 sierra z71 with 175,000. Both original and working great. Regular fluid and filter changes, Dexron VI or Mobil 1 fluid.

2002 5.3v8 w/ 3.73 gears w/ tow package.  My 4l60e lasted 155,000 miles and still had energy left in it, but I recently replaced it because I am towing a camper interstate pretty often and I could tell it was on it's last legs when pushed to the limits.


Im the only owner of veh and I pretty much babied it.

    • Fix one problem and find another.   Truck didn't have a thermostat in it so I flushed out the system today and refilled with 50/50 Dexcool. This truck is so old (LOL) that it has a sticker under the hood alerting people to the fact that it contains such. There is also an orange supplement with the owner's manual alerting the owner that "Your vehicle is one of a number of late production 1995 General Motors vehicles that use a newly developed engine coolant in the cooling system..."   I was still a little flummoxed by what seemed like a rich condition (exhaust smell, and a puff of carbon with a punchy rev). While watching the coolant temperature and testing the thermostat with my scanner, I happened to notice the IAT (incoming air temperature) to the intake was -40F. I know the temp is below average today, but I can still feel my face, and I was wearing shorts.   D'oh!! I realized I had never plugged the IAT back in, and the airbox was out while I was doing coolant. So I paused, reinstalled the airbox and plugged in the IAT, and viola. Things cleared right up, and I watched the coolant temp climb to a reported 198 degrees on the scanner (195 thermostat) and then it dropped to 194 (open) and then back up to 198 and held. Let it cool, came back, checked the coolant level and was satisifed.   Victory lap?   It needed more than the couple of gallons of gas I put in it from almost bone dry, so I ran it up to the gas station. It had earned it, or, at least I was pretty certain I wouldn't be draining or removing the tank anytime soon.   CEL popped on just as I was cruising a nice steady 40mph, just after coasting down a slight downhill curve.. Of course, it did, because, why let me enjoy not having dash emojis for a little while.   I just happened to have the scanner plugged in. I don't text and drive but I might scan and drive. Don't tell the police.   P0401, EGR flow insufficient.    Well, hello, EGR... ...my old friend! Welcome to the party, now that the engine reaches the factory-programmed operating temperature. I'm sure it was gagging on hostile, rich exhaust and carbon this whole time so I'll take it off and look again.   At least it's easily accessible, and worst case, about $65 to replace.   To keep, or to sell... Hmm. I want it running correctly either way. It's easier to sell when there are no fault codes.   It needs tires (they're aged out and cracking)   It could probably use an oil pan seal, or maybe the timing cover gasket/ junction with the pan needs redone because I've got an issue there that leaves a drop of oil on the floor.   If I do tires I'm sure they'll say the ball joints could use freshening, and, and, and, and.... At some point I'll have to stop. I can't (shouldn't) make it perfect, that's not what this rig is.
    • Take it back. That's about all you can do.  Mark 
    • Gloss black would look better, but I'd paint match the grill before ditching the chrome bumpers.
    • Mine has done that since new. The colder the worse. 
    • Yeah, that's my understanding. The newer trucks are 433Mhz vs the older 315Mhz TPMS. Putting these wheels on is costing me a small fortune, but so far, I'm still OK with it.    Next week the chrome bumpers are scheduled to be replaced with flat black ones. That would complete what the dealer still owes me.
