Police Package Tahoe

I was surprised that police package 2WD Tahoe comes with the 3.08 rear end gears. I expected at least 3.42s for better acceleration. And the only option is the AFM version of the 5.3 liter V8. I thought that they would use the 6.2 liter V8 instead.

They handle very well being 2wd and lowered a little bit. For 2011 they are limited to 141mph. I love em. Only Sups and K9s get the 4X4s. Well in my area at least...

They also come prewired for most of the lighting and sirens and also come with the second battery already installed. They also have additional upgrades that you can only get on the PPV. You can go to http://www.gmfleet.com/government/police/c...e-2WD/index.jsp to see what is offered but they can only be obtained by government agengies (or so I was told when I purchased four of them for the PD I was procuring them for...).

I doubt it's a matter of fuel economy. It's more likely a matter of not going through the hassle and cost of certifying a powertrain combo for a low volume/low profit vehicle. Not to mention police cars needn't be hot rods, Crown Vics and the FWD Impalas are all sloooow but they get the job done.

They keep the 3.08 gear to keep the trans and rear end together. If they went with diffrent gears there would be a better chance of the blowing something up sooner. These car see a lot of abuse, everyday!!! Tahoe will smoke a crown vic. The 3.08 gears off the line are nothing great, but once they are wound up it will go.

The balance is fuel economy 80% is patrolling. Police units rarely need high acceleration rates as most offenders have a "POS" but the radio rules.

Its all about fuel economy. GM has to meet CAFE ratings. Also, the 4X4 is limited to 98 MPH or right around there, no 4X4 police package is certified for high speed pursuit. After this year there will be no more Crown Vic. The only choices for *sedans* will be the new Caprice 9C1, (which is flat out AWESOME!) The Dodge Charger, (getting old and dated) and Ford's Taurus police package (replacing the Vicki)

A lot of those old "POS" don't have all of the nannies that the newer cars have. Combine that with total reckless abandon, and they can be hard to keep up with.

i remeber hearing that the taurus cop car is either AWD or FWD and its an ecoboost V6, and that not many police officers will want that. they will want to stick with RWD V8 such as the caprice and charger. it will be intersting to see what police cars dominate in a few years

There is a brand new 2WD police Tahoe for sale in Houston , TX for $ 30k and change. Not a bad price considering that you can only get the most basic LS Tahoe for that. However, the sale is restricted to government agencies or retired police/security officers.
