Using Rain-x On Windshield

Recommended Posts

My wife loves Rain-X. She uses it on all of her windows on her Pontiac.

She wants me to put it on my Silverado including the rear view mirrors.

I told her I have heated RVM and didn't know if that would be a problem.

Anyone use Rain-X on their Rear View Mirrors that are heated?

Glad you guys have good luck with that product. I have used Rain-X windshield washer fluid in the past and it seems to make the windshield all smeary, kind of puts a film on it. It's very obvious when using the wipers, especially in the winter time when it's cold outside.

What I have is a spray that you apply to the windshield and let it dry and then buff the windshield to a smooth finish. This will allow the water to bead off the windshield above 20 mph.

Most waxes will do the same thing.

Kinda on topic. What is the best way to get smearing off the windshield? I have some looks like fingerprints/ smearing on inside of windshield. I have tried everything from glass cleaner to water. What is best way to get windshield clear as crystal?

For the inside of the windshield, get some professional Windex in the aerosol can (not the stuff in the spritzer bottle) and use a microfiber cloth. Second best cleaner I found is Invisible Glass in the spray can. B&W newspaper works well instead of microfiber but is kind of messy.

I HATE RAIN-X washer fluid, polish for glass, and a couple other things that say rain-x...... It puts a film on your windshield, and its tough to break........ It was all we had for a while in the store, and couldn't get the blue stuff......... NAPA changed suppliers on the blue regular stuff. I tried the rain-x ended up pulling the line apart on the fender and holding the pump till it ran dry running in out on the ground. This was about the 3rd time I used the crap...... I filled it up with blue I outsourced from Walmart. The polish stuff seems to do the same thing as well..

Take it as is, I just don't like it but some people love it. I sell a pretty good bit of the crap tooo.

Usually I use Duragloss Glass Water Spot Remover (also called Nu-glass)..... Water usually sheets off the windshield quite well. And no FILM.

I have had great luck with Rain X that I spray on the window, use papertowel to spread it around. It turns into a haze then I take the hose and wash it off. Comes out cristal clear.

I had rain x on one side mirror and one window to compare the difference. On some mornings the rain x glass pieces would have heavy dew on them, while the non rain x were dry. Minor but a bit of a pain when your in a hurry.

JMHO, but I'm not a fan of Rain-X or other waxes on the windshield. My wipers always end up hopping/skipping over the windshield when it's on there. Below certain speeds, it's safe just to drive without wipers, but in heavy rain...nah.

Rain-x on external glass surfaces other than the windshield (windows, backlight, etc.) isn't bad and does make a nice difference. Still, not really worth it IMO.
