My truck burns oil bad and there's sludge n shit in there... idk what to do anymore

Posted

Mine will burn oil when pushed hard. If I use the cruise while towing, and let the engine spool up to 5k on every hill, I'll burn a quart in 300 miles. If I keep the RPM in check, I'll use a quart in about 6k miles.

I've owned 40 year old engines that didn't burn a drop .... :nonod:

Sarah, I have posted this before but I think it is good information. Years ago I knew some guys that worked at the GM Desert Proving Grounds both worked on dynos testing engines doing oil testing. They found that sometimes changing the brand and or weight of the oil you could take a engine that is using oil and reduce it or you might even increase the usage. So with that being said you might try a different oil brand or changing weight of oil. Just my $0.02!!!

This is especially true for older engines. Both my 300k mile trucks would burn the ##### out of light weight oil. Roughly 1 quart per 1000 miles. With regular castrol 10w30 it was normally 1 quart per 4k

I'll have to remember that as my truck is using a lot of oil. I stopped one leak but I think it's burning some too. I've only had it for 3500 miles and it's going through about 6 quarts of oil (between leaks and burning). I just "changed" my oil over the weekend and after my initial set of oil leak repairs. We'll see how much it helped real soon.

Rear main leaking? If so, let me know how bad it is to replace. Hate to say it, but I'm using you as the guinea pig for a lot of my future repairs since it is the same year and miles as mine!

I use castrol gtx 10w40 considering Mobil 1 but don't want to spend a ton only to burn it away

Yikes ans just had a tune. Mobil one will take away the sludge but if oil is slipping through somewhere then synthetic will make it worse, since it flows better.

Throw in some Vavoline Maxlife synthetic. It will clean the sludge and it has seal conditioners. After a thousand miles to clean you could swap to conventional Maxlife if your oil consumption increases.

A can of Seafoam added to the oil a few days before your next change should help start the cleaning process. Seafoam claims its safe to drive with Seafoam in the oil full time.

Is it OK to go back n forth between synthetic and conventional if need be? And is valvoline max life an additive?

Max life is the oil. Like the difference in castrol GTX and Edge. Max life is made for higher mileage engines. And i personally wouldn't go back and forth with synthetic
