Just realised a post in which I posted a picture has an error in it as I was LEDing an HVAC panel for a member here. Post #14080 page 939 is too old for me to edit so I will post the correction here. If an admin could replace the same picture with this new one I'd appreciate it. I would make me look like I know what I'm talking about.

Hope this is what he was aiming for...

This is a butcher job on the backplane of an instrument panel done by somebody who whatched a youtube video and all of a sudden thought he was an expert. This is what it's suppose to look like after you're done.

Yikes !!!

What does this mod achieve

It's not a mod, he tried to change the stepper motors in his 2005 Sierra instrument panel. Watched a YouTube video and it looked simple enough. Simple if you have the skills. He's a lumberjack by trade, this was a little off his beaten path.

Today I smoked out an intersection with my duramax. Not on purpose either. Truck went into a regen and pumped out a bunch of whiteish smoke for a few seconds as I accelerated normally from the stop light. It is not supposed to do this. It's been to the dealer twice, both times, they couldn't do anything about it or were not able to duplicate it. Now it's out of the factory extended emissions warranty as of last month. Lovely.

Delete it and be done.

Another brainstorm, brought to you by GM and the EPA! :nonod:

Believe me, I wish I could delete it. Emissions test required here. I am however, going to trade it in in the next year or two. <sigh> First GM truck to let me down. Albeit stupid emissions crap. Engine/drive train wise, it's solid. But I'll get me another GM. Probably a Silverado Gasser 6.2L. Oooor.. I might try a Ram out.

This DEF fluid creates so much soot build up its scary. Doesn't seem to be too much of a problem if you drive lots of miles. But for people who don't and can't or don't realize there truck is regen. Well yeah, that's going to be a fun bill.

You won't be disappointed in the 6.2L. By then I would think GM will have the 10spd tranny hooked up in thier trucks.

It will be interesting to see how the 10 speed stacks up.

Got my tailgate handle on, my skid plates on, and a new air dam on. They all look great, especially the tailgate handle. Now only if the weather would warm up, so I can wash my truck and take pictures!

I finally got the wheels I wanted, just waiting for the Laramie GM dealer to get back to me. All I have left is exhaust and a bedliner.

My ol' man had nothing but trouble with the DPF on his '09. Every 200 miles he'd have to go to the dealer for a forced regen - of course GM doesn't let the BUYER do this on his own ...

After pissing away $1,800 in dealer visits, he had it removed it and tuned out ... but several years later, the state started cracking down on inspections. He had to revert the truck back to stock! What a friggin joke. All I can say is it's a good thing he held on to that stock pipe! Probably would've been over $2k ...

Lucky for him, he sold it right afterward. My brother sold his the year prior, but that was because the truck was just rusting away to nothing. They both bought new Rams last month.

Make sure your Line-X dealer removes the tailgate access panel and plastic covers inside the bed.

Why was he wanting to regen so much? The whole DEF concept is dumb. Same with the idea of recirculating the exhaust/crankcase back into the intake. All it does is cause either soot build up (diesel) or you introduce this milky fluid into the engine gunking up the heads. Thank god for catch cans and deletes. How are your family members like the Rams, did they go diesel? Those trucks have come a long way in recent years. I still don't like how they haven't changed the exterior since 2003. It's time to give it a full overhaul.

They're happy with the Rams so far - they're the 1500s with the Hemi. Definitely have come a long way!

After all the crap they went through with the diesels and all the emission crap on the new ones, they decided to go gas this time around. The trucks are really sharp looking, IMO. Ride nice and have tons of power too. Factory bed liner, and factory lighting under the bed rails is a nice touch. My favorite is the covert cooler in the floor there in back. Has a drain and everything.

It wasn't that he WANTED to regen ... it was that the truck went into limp mode due to constant regen failures. Would never regen on it's own like it's supposed to. Every single time we'd tow the boat down the Cape, we'd end up in limp mode, in the right lane doing 45 MPH. Infuriating in a truck he paid over $40 LARGE for ...

My dad got the silver, my brother got white. The wood chocks are there because we were rotating the tires. He's got 7k miles on her so far.

Today so far, sold and programmed a FOB for a 2007 Silverado Classic, then repaired a ( KBRASTU15 ) for an 04 Maxima, then repair a 2003 Silverado cluster with a rare problem. An actual component had failed. Replaced a glass diode and she fired right up. The guy was pretty happy that he didn't have to get a new one.

    • The BORA 3/8" spacers arrived yesterday along with the extended lug nuts. I got the front wheels changed out today, but was overheated and covered in sweat so bad, I figured getting both front wheels done was a win, and took a cool shower. Hopefully, I'll go out tomorrow morning before it gets into the 80+ temps and do the backs. After getting the first wheel snugged up, I backed out one of the lug nuts then hand turned to count threads. I believe I stopped counting around 12-13, so I think I'm good there.
    • My fullsize truck is averaging over 26mpg so I'm pretty happy with the increased fuel economy targets. When I had my gas Silverado (2020 5.3) it was averaging 21. Again, for a fullsize truck, that's very different from the 12-15 these things used to get 30 years ago.   Whine all you want, increased MPG is a good thing.
    • That is a fair point, and I think an OBD-first proof is probably the right next step. I agree that the value is not the hardware box by itself. The marketable part would be the software: always-on capture, baseline learning, event reduction, system-specific reports, and alerts. Also agreed that if an OBD device is always plugged in and has local storage, it should not miss the event in the same way that a scanner plugged in after the fact would. The only thing I would not want to assume yet is that an ELM327-class device gives all the late-GM data needed at the rate needed. Standard OBD live data, DTCs, freeze frame, Mode 6, VIN, and calibration information are definitely the right starting point. GDS2 also proves that a lot of useful ECM data can be viewed through the DLC without needing a DTC first. The question I need to test is whether the data needed for a useful GM V8 event report is actually available through the DLC, and at a useful sample rate: - misfire counts / roughness by cylinder - AFM/DFM state - oil pressure and oil temperature - fuel trims - voltage / reset context - U-codes and communication events - calibration / software information - whether these are standard PIDs, enhanced DIDs, Mode 6 data, GDS2-only data, or not available So I think the right benchmark is: 1. Build the OBD-only version first. 2. Keep it plugged in and logging locally. 3. Compare it against GDS2 / freeze frame / HP Tuners or another higher-end logger. 4. Measure which parameters are available and at what update rate. 5. Only justify ECM-side hardware if it captures useful evidence the OBD version cannot. So you may be right: the consumer product might simply be an always-plugged-in OBD event recorder with much better reporting. A question for you: when you say ELM327 devices can already deliver all the data needed, do you mean generic OBD Mode 01 data only, or GM enhanced data as well? For a useful GM V8 report, would generic OBD data be enough, or would you expect the tool to include enhanced items like misfire by cylinder, AFM/DFM state, oil pressure/oil temp, U-codes, and calibration information?
