AFM all the way

i've had three different trucks with AFM, no problems here.

If you hold onto your AFM truck longer, you may see some problems. Going through 3 isn't long enough to tell if there will be an issue. They only started in 2007.

We have two trucks in our family with AFM 2007,2008 both engines have zero engine problems, no oil burning and I have yet to ever notice with the AFM is operating its that smooth.

I had a 2009 silverado that I didnt have any problems with until my commute changed from about 10min. on back roads to about 45min. on the highway. After about 6 months of the longer commute I had to have all the pistons and rings changed. The truck only had 27k on it, never ran the same after and started using oil again so I traded it and got a 2011 with the 6.2 and couldnt be happier.

mferry22,

I’m sorry you had that experience with your 2009 Silverado, but am happy to hear you are enjoying your new 2011.

I can tell when mine kicks in every time (and verified by the dash display). Its like a sudden drag on the truck. Sorta like an a/c compressor cycling on and off and I can hear the subtle change in exhaust tone. How people can't notice this is beyond me. It's new so maybe it just has to "wear in" more. Not really a big deal.........yet.

Oh I notice it, but it is nothing more noticable than maybe a gear shift. Yes I can hear it a tiny bit too but I don't see where it is bothersome at all.

Mine has a pretty bad "kick down" from V8 to V4 at speeds less than 45mph. Hardly seamless. Going to the dealer soon but I am not too hopeful.

Like I've mentioned in other threads, at lower speeds I recommend driving in M4/M5. It disables AFM and in my opinion, I don't want my truck lugging in a high gear at low speeds, I'll sacrifice some fuel efficiency for better responsiveness.

I've noticed my 2012 GMC Sierra C1500, 5.3L, 6-spd in "V4" mode at low speeds- in 4th gear or lower!!

How is that possible, I was under the impression AFM only worked when in 6th gear & when situations dictate it to??

It will go whenever it meets criteria when the shifter is in D. In M4/5, it never turn on. The AFM can be aggressive in when it turns on, just like the trans wants to be in the highest gear possible. I hate that and use the manual lockout mode on everything but long highway drives.
