4 or 6 speed transmission.......

Thanks for all the comments..

Just to clear up a thing or two, I'm very aware that other then the Denali, there was no 6spd in '07. I'm considering a '07/08 with a 4spd or a newer truck with the 6spd. I've owed a '07 Silverado 5.3/4spd and a '10 Silverado 5.3/6spd, both standard cab short bed trucks and they were two entirely differant trucks. I set them both up for the street and that 4spd truck was a hot rod compared to the 6spd truck. Although nothing pulled a trailer better then that 6spd, it knew at all times just what gear to be in. Anyway, I believe the 4spd to have much better throttle response but I think I'm not going to allow the tranny to dictate my decision that much, they're both great trucks. I'll look for the best truck I can find since for the first time, I'm looking used.....thanks all

My truck with the 5.3/4 speed auto/3.73 gears does not downshift too much unless I am towing something or going up a hill. When I test drove a 2009 4.3 V6/4 speed auto/3.23 gears truck it was downshifting constantly on every little incline. It was very annoying.

My '06 had the 4 speed....my '13 has the 6 speed.....I'd much rather have the 4 speed. I got better MPG's, and better response with the 4 speed simply 'cause I gotta keep kickin' the 6 speed in the arse to get it to downshift and get going whenever I want to go just a little bit faster here on the interstate....darn thing spends more time at 3,500 RPM than it does below 2,000

They both have their place IMO, if the first gear wasn't so damn talk in 4l80e it would be my favourite tranny...next to a built allison of course :)

Yes, the dang thing will shift to 6th gr at 45 on an easy go and then not down shift unless you stomp on it and then down to 4th instead of 5th...have to tune it to enjoy it and then lose the drive trn wty

Hello everyone,

I'm in the market for a used '07- Tahoe. I'll be pulling a small trailer with a Harley at times so I'm going to stick with the 5.3 engine. My question is this, it seems to me that the 6 speed tranny has much more of a flat torque curve compared to the 4 speed model. The 4 speed tranny seems much more responsive. Can I get some thoughts about this from some of you that have had experiance with both, thank you, Rich

Go 4spd my 13 5.3 with 6spd is a piece of shit it's can never stay in one gear constantly shifting in witch returns very bag MPG if you got a 5.3 with a 6spd with 373 or 410s might be oka but being a Tahoe its probably got sluggish 342s and trust me you don't want a 6spd there junk! 342s and a 6spd don't mix at all!

I didn't like the 6 speed 6L80E in my '13 at first. After I tuned the truck, it solved most of the erratic shifting, and "clunkiness" I was experiencing. The factory tune was not good, what it boils down to. They are a very durable transmission, much moreso than the 4L60E.

i have the 6 spd in my work vehicle, and 3.42 gears, and it's terrible..get to a slight grade and it can't decide what gear it needs to be in. most times i just put it into M5 and leave it there on any place that is not flat. right now it has 205K miles on it and is in the shop with no forward gears..stopped put in park, put in gear and went nowhere i'll take the 4 spd any day..

What tune do you got I'm tempted to take my truck to Saskatoon to a performance shop get a Valant cold air and dyno tune but not sure if its really worth the $700.00 or I was thinking a Edge power programmer.

What I've been doing lately is just put it in Tow Haul Mode every time I fire it up.....it helps

i just looked it up in GM service info ,seems a 6sp is avail for 07 tahoe ,,,,who knew eh ? lol

That information is 100% incorrect.

The 6 speed transmission was not available in any 2007 Tahoe. The 6-speed wasn't available until 2009.

MikeNH is correct, 2009 is the first year the Tahoe had the 6-speed.

Can you explain exactly how the 6 speed is "junk".

Mine has been great, it's definitely smoother than the 4 speed in my 08 V-Max. It also runs cooler when towing.

Tow/Haul mode is also much better with the 6 speed, especially while going downhill. It keeps the truck slow and I barely have to use the brakes. With the 4 speed, it doesn't seem to have any grade braking and I am constantly on the brake pedal to maintain speed.

Like I said it can't stay in one gear all it does is shift up and down up and down even on flat ground it still just shift so I find I have to put it in M 5 or M 4 then its fine. I figure that's why my 5.3 gets worse MPG then my 08 2500HD 6.0 that 08 had 6spd but bigger engine and 373s it hardly ever shifted. This is another reason why I decided to post my 2013 up for sale no more 5.3 6spd and 342 drivetrain trucks for this guy. I for see a eco diesel Ram in the near future since GM refuses to make a diesel 1500.

    • I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death.
    • In the 80's 90's I'd run Honda's 7,500 miles between changes using Red Line HP 5W20 and do it for hundreds of thousands of miles with issues. Back in the day it was an SAE 20 with the HTHS of a SAE 30 and SN add load. It was also very polar. Oxidation VOA was over 120. Besides those motors were SPFI and lean burn tech. I could have likely run it longer but never did.    We had a Toyota bought new I ran on Pennzoil's latest and greatest synthetic of the day with "Penthane". A made up word for a very low dose of PAO. Tried 7,500 mile OCI's in that Group III/VI chemistry and the rings tapped out at 90K. Rocker box wasn't as bad as the one Punch put up but it wasn't good either. Also a SPFI motor.    I'm around 3,750 across the board on these GDI monsters and the oil it tapped out by then usually on TBN/TAN crossover and color. Red Line HP Euro.    The AMSOIL SS brochures tell you to follow the OEM values for the service class but that it can be run up to 25K if monitored. I can't imagine what motor could go that distance and not tap out. I've never owned one.    Yes, I know. Lot's of people do. I'm just not going to be one of them.
    • I knew a guy in the early 80's that bought a new Monte Carlo and ran it a 100,000 miles without ever changing the filter or the oil. Just kept adding. It looked like that inside.
    • Good evening. I was lucky enough to get passed down to me a 2007 GMC LBZ that was my great uncle's. While the underside and rockers are more or less gone I feel like with time I can restore it to working order since it only has 110,000 miles and he put nearly every option he could get without getting the new body style since he did not trust DEF. So far I have done everything I can think of but when I put the key into the ignition nothing happens. I put 2 brand new batteries in it. Cleaned the terminals. Check all the fuses and relays and they all pass with my multimeter. I know I'm missing something that I just cant think of. The only odd thing is the OBD2 port works which makes me think its not the mega fuse. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    • Looks nice. I still have my 2000, 1500. Bought a 2025, 1500 for retirement. Feels solid. These trucks have a bad rap on the internet. My brother has a `24 1500, 5.3 with 52,000 miles. No problems at all. Mine hasn`t either but mine`s only at 12,700 miles. Have seen some of these things with 100,000 miles with no problems.
