I've been able to get 23 ~ 24 mpg registering on my DIC active mpg recorder in 25 mile increments (don't know the real name of this screen). And, 20 mpg while on road trips running 70 ~ 75 mph when calculated after going through a full tank. This is far better performance than my 2008 Silverado 5.3/4 spd CC delivered. I'm thinking the excellent mileage is a result of the 6.2's great hp and torque which enables the engine to spend more time in 4cyl mode and tranny to spend more time in 7th or 8th gear. Btw, seeing excellent mpg results when towing my 25' 6,100lb TT.

Forgive me, but I'm old and not current on new lingo; what's a "taco"? A Tahoe maybe?

An experiment I did. 60 mph cruise control set on my commute. 90% highway. 563 miles to the tank. Best 25 mile mpg was 30.6. Filled up the tank with 24.5 gallons.

On a recent round trip from Clearwater, FL to Sarasota, FL, I averaged 23.2 mpg. This is outstanding mileage. I tend to tap the brakes when I see the stop light is red to let the truck coast (not excessively) a bit before I brake to slow. Around town, my commute mpg is 18-20 mpg (with some stop-and-go). I hope to achieve better mileage on a longer trip with max speeds 70-75mph.

 

2014 Silverado High Country, crew cab, 5.3L. Only mod is a K&N filter in the stock air box.

This is the kind of performance I hope to approach on a long trip. With Cruise and some coasting downhill and approaching stop lights. The truck seems to know when it should be in v4 and v8 mode.

I turned off brake assist and i think my mpg went up a little

Now that I've done the 6" lift, 35" tires and taken the front air valance off, I'm seeing about 16 MPG on the same stretch of highway where I'd previously get 24 MPG (that's adjusting calculation for new tires). My all around driving has been more like 3 mpg drop off. City isn't nearly as dramatic a drop as freeway when I get all that wind resistance. What's interesting is I clocked about 15 MPG on a stretch of freeway that is 19 MPG without lift and tires. It seems the air resistance allows for about a 15/16 MPG highway max at 65 MPH regardless of whether I'm going flat or on a decline. All that wind resistance seems to counter act going downhill! Anyways, just thought I'd post it in case someone comes looking for MPG before and after a 6" lift and 35s.

 

I personally don't mind the drop off. I knew it would happen and I didn't buy a truck or lift one to save money at the pump; however, it is interesting to watch the performance. It is also noteworthy that my 2009 Suburban LTZ with the 5.3L, and no changes to stock setup, got the same mileage as my lifted truck does now. The engine enhancements and difference in weight accounts for this.

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
