trading my 2014 sierra...

On another 2014 sierra. Despite trying to convince myself of the contrary, I was getting annoyed w/ the 3.08 gearing in my current SLT 4x4. Even after giving it 5,000 miles to "learn" my driving style the tranny was still shifting far too much and the power was in the upper RPMs, so I would have to give it more gas than I wanted to on hilly stretches of highway or to jump out into traffic, then I'd be down 1-2 more gears than I'd need to be resulting in my momentum being more than I wanted and causing me to tap the brake rather than coast. From 0-30 there's just a "hollow" feel from the drivetrain.

That and I knew I was going to spend some $$ changing out the tires & putting in different shocks/struts.

I got my salesman hunting for a 3.42 equipped SLT crew cab, 4x4, w/ preferred package and was able to get one in Black w/ black leather, Z71, all terrain w/ the all terrain 20's. - Everything I want except I'm not a big fan of black, although w/ the all terrain rims and color matched bumper/grill and some tints it is going to look pretty mean.

I haven't even made a payment yet on my current truck and will only end up paying $4,000 out of pocket to match the same exact payments that I have on my current truck (put a good chunk down to begin w/) - given that the new truck I'm getting stickers for $2,000+ more than my original one and has everything I want and 0 miles I think I'm in pretty good shape. That $4,000 includes a spray in liner ($400) and the $505 I save on my payment = roughly $3,000 net. Essentially I lost a grand.

Keep in mind I do have $3,000 in GM card points to put in, $1000 trade allowance, and dealer coupons.

If you are used to anything that is even remotely "quick" as a DD, DO NOT BUY a truck w/ 3.08 gears. The 3.42's are good for over 1/2 a second to 60mph

did you explore the option of just swapping out the gears? getting an entirely new truck for a different gear ratio seems extreme.

You will be happy with that All Terrain... everyone that see mine comments on the 20in argent AT wheels.

Nothing looks as good as the AT in my opinion... of course that's why I got one.

to the other guys... read and learn. Take your time and get the EXACT truck you want. Everyday we see posting about guys that want to add this... or add that to their truck after the fact.....wishing they got it from the factory. LED bed lights, LED headlights, Bose.. the list goes on. When in doubt... SLT or LTZ

Congrats, black is awesome, just a bitch to keep clean. Do a good clay bar and paint sealant on it when you get it. It will help keep swirl marks to a minimum.

I wouldn't think there would be a huge difference in 3.08 an 3.42. I think you should consider waiting on the 3.73

I think it depends where the OP lives and drives. He mentioned driving on hills a lot, so the 3.42 would be an improvement. If he gets the 3.73 he may not want the additional equipment with the NHT package, and the stiffer ride I'm sure the different rear suspension will give with that package. If I was him I think I'd wait for the 6.2 with the 3.42's.

Another thing the OP may want to look at is a tune. It seems like what he's experiencing is the byproduct of tuning for max efficiency. Anytime I hit some backroads or go up in the mountains I put it in tow/haul mode and that helps a lot.

You realize you can have 3.42s/3.73s/whatever installed for less than $500 right?

Is that true? I may swap my 3.08 to a higher ratio down the line if thats all it is. I really don't find any issues with it like the OP does, and I live in a hilly area, but it might me nice to have that extra low end.

I'm guessing some reprogramming to the trans has to be done? All I know is with all these damn computers now.. nothing is as easy as it seems...

Probably a little more with 4wd.

Nope, 100% not true. #1 - you just bought a $50,000 truck now you void your warranty? - It has an electronic locking differential, you would need GM OEM parts, they're expensive I looked into it. You also need to change the front diff/transfer case, get a retune from either aftermarket or the factory. It is different than gear swaps on previous gen trucks.

Drive both back to back - REALLY drive them, I didn't notice it initially just putting around, but then I drove a 3.42 equipped truck like I stole it and the difference is significant, it'll smoke the tires and fishtail through 1-2 gears - nothing close to that on a 3.08 truck. It is a whole .6 seconds quicker to 60mph - that is a legit difference.

If you think it is drastic to do, take a look at what I spent and tell me if you could swap out your shocks/struts/rims/tires/gears for $4,000, keep a warranty, and get reverse the 5,000 miles you already have on your truck so the odometer reas ZERO....yeah didn't think so.

I'm just trying to keep from having buyer's remorse and/or spending additional money on mods in the future. I KNEW I was going to swap out the tires/rims in the very least on the current SLT I have, and that would run about 1/2 of what I'm paying for an entirely NEW truck w/ more options....
