Thanks for the replies, I like the idea of the 6.2 but the 5.3 is plenty of power for what I need. Like I've said before- ill get a 6.2 but it'll be under the hood of a Vette or Camaro where it belongs!

On another 2014 sierra. Despite trying to convince myself of the contrary, I was getting annoyed w/ the 3.08 gearing in my current SLT 4x4. Even after giving it 5,000 miles to "learn" my driving style the tranny was still shifting far too much and the power was in the upper RPMs, so I would have to give it more gas than I wanted to on hilly stretches of highway or to jump out into traffic, then I'd be down 1-2 more gears than I'd need to be resulting in my momentum being more than I wanted and causing me to tap the brake rather than coast. From 0-30 there's just a "hollow" feel from the drivetrain.

 

That and I knew I was going to spend some $$ changing out the tires & putting in different shocks/struts.

 

I got my salesman hunting for a 3.42 equipped SLT crew cab, 4x4, w/ preferred package and was able to get one in Black w/ black leather, Z71, all terrain w/ the all terrain 20's. - Everything I want except I'm not a big fan of black, although w/ the all terrain rims and color matched bumper/grill and some tints it is going to look pretty mean.

 

I haven't even made a payment yet on my current truck and will only end up paying $4,000 out of pocket to match the same exact payments that I have on my current truck (put a good chunk down to begin w/) - given that the new truck I'm getting stickers for $2,000+ more than my original one and has everything I want and 0 miles I think I'm in pretty good shape. That $4,000 includes a spray in liner ($400) and the $505 I save on my payment = roughly $3,000 net. Essentially I lost a grand.

 

Keep in mind I do have $3,000 in GM card points to put in, $1000 trade allowance, and dealer coupons.

 

If you are used to anything that is even remotely "quick" as a DD, DO NOT BUY a truck w/ 3.08 gears. The 3.42's are good for over 1/2 a second to 60mph

my 14 LTZ has 3.08's and its plenty quick enough... I traded in an 08 Sierra denali with the 6.2l... and in all honesty who is going to notice .5 seconds to 60....Ill take the MPG..

To each his own, but I drove that 3.08 equipped truck for 5000 miles and I can tell you it is just an awkward combo for that drivetrain. The tranny gets lost between gears due to the higher gearing and it results in a less than smooth driving characteristic. The 3.42s give the truck more pull at lower rpm which results in the truck sticking to a gear rather than dropping down and back up again constantly. The truck was "clunkier" w/ the 3.08/

 

There is no difference in fuel economy that I have noticed, if anything for my driving habits it seems to be getting better mileage w/ 3.42s to be honest.

It's official, I am doing the same swap as crushNchowda. Trading in my truck for a new truck. I want the 3.42 and this time I'm getting a black all terrain. Since I scratched my wheels recently its also a bonus to have all new ones. Dealer doing it for $5000CDN all in.

Truck already had over 5000km on it so I think its a good deal.

Swapping out the gears would cost over $4000 they told me, and then the warranty is only for 1 year on whatever they replace.

New truck exactly how I want it, new wheels, new warranty this way.

How could you swap to 3.73's? They have a larger axle completely. The 3.42's and 3.08's use a 9.5 rear end and the 3.73's use a 9.75. Either way I have 3.08's right now but I'm also a good bit lighter than most of you so she's faster regardless. I will wait for someone to wreck their truck and just grab the 3.73 axles and just do a total axle swap.

I'm sure someone makes 3.73s for the axle. Maybe not GM but an aftermarket vendor.

That's what I said after my black G8 GT, but hey it sure heck looks good when shined up! Being up higher and the front end being so blocky I'm less concerned about dings/dents in the truck than a low slung sports sedan.

I test drove about a dozen 14 Silverados and Sierras a total of 500 miles before buying. I agree with the OP the 3.08 just didn't feel right compared to the 3.42, but it did get slightly better mileage. Since I knew I would be adding a lift and 34" tires, getting the 3.42 was a no-brainer for me.

Tell me about it, my truck is Tungsten Metallic which is a really dark color. It looks GREAT clean, but that only lasts about a day. I am NEVER buying a dark vehicle again. In about 2015 or 2016 I'm ordering one in Silver with the 6.2.

dark colored vehicles look great... but after owning white vehicles, thats the only color im going with from now on... so easy to clean and they dont get nearly as hot as a dark vehicle

A half second difference to 60 is HUGE. That would be 5 vehicle lengths by the time you got to only 60 and the gap will continue to grow from there.
