Rear Gearing and a Lift

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I've been researching lift kits for the 2014 for a while now and I'm set on a McGaughys lift.

Problem is I have 3.08's in my truck and as far as I can find there's no after market ring and Pinions out yet.

Does anyone have any idea if the 2014 rear ends are the same as a 2013?

Really want to lift it but with 3.08's it just doesn't make sense to. I'm looking for 4.11's.

Any info is appreciated

Thanks

I'm looking at getting 35's, from pictures I've seen that seems to be what people are running.

Still not sure if I would go 3.73 or 4.11, really hoping Yukon will make gears for this rig.

You think 4.56 or 4.88, that sounds awful low to me. Especially with a 6 speed she'll be revving like crazy on the highway?

Although if I ever decide to go 37's I wouldn't have to change them again.

Do you have experience with gearing? And please don't take offence to that I'd just like more info on why, maybe you know things I don't.

Really asking now because BDS just released there 6 inch kit for the truck.

Has anyone opened that diff up? It looks an awful lot like the 9.5" 14 bolt they have built since 1979 just with 2 less bolts in the cover.

With a 4.56 rear and 35's you will be right around the 2000rpm mark at 65mph. You'll probably lose about 5-6 mpg's with the lift, tires, and rear end while cruising. With 4.10's you'll be around the 1800 mark. Have fun with this calculator so you can figure out what you want.

The 6L80E ratios are as follows:

1st - 4.027

2nd - 2.364

3rd - 1.532

4th - 1.152

5th - 0.852

6th - 0.667

Rev - 3.064

With big tires that should be nearly perfect. I know you have more power, but I like my truck to run ~2k rpm on the highway so I rarely have to downshift. With 4.10's your truck will have to work harder than with 4.56's, your fuel mileage should be about the same except it'll be more driveable, especially around town.

That was always my plan to put the least amount of stress on the truck as possible.

Ya I'm not worried about gas mileage at all. I think it's kind of funny when people lift a truck then worry about gas mileage doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me.

So sounds like I should be in the market for a 4.56.

Anyone got an opinions on the mcgaughy lift? I checked it out and it seems pretty well built. I just have never heard a bad thing about bds and have used them in the past with no problems. I also like how bds doesn't use a spacer on the front where McGaughys does.

My truck is geared with 4.88s and I have a little knowledge in the gearing dept. there is an active thread right now where a Denali owner is disappointed with 4.10s and that's with a 6spd and 6.2, of course. The final drive ratio should be about he same with the 6spd vs the 4spd, so I wouldn't worry. I wouldn't hesitate to run 4.88s with 35s, which is exactly what I did. I now have 37s but I preferred the feel with 35s. Gearing charts are a good measure but they really only take into consideration the tire diameter. You should also consider the added weight of the tires and larger wheels as well as the added rolling resistance. 4.56 is a safe and balanced bet but since you're not too worried about fuel mileage and may even consider 37s later then I would got with 88s.
