Ford F-150 makes you wear a seatbelt?

My dad has a 2012 Ford F-150. In the past he told me if the seat belt is not buckled the radio will not play. I found it hard to believe. However yesterday when he picked me up the message center on the dash said something like audio will be unmuted when seat belt is buckled. Sure enough when I buckled my seat belt up the radio came back on and the message went away. So I guess Ford makes you wear the seat belt or else? Has anyone seen this before?

That is clearly blatant discrimination and bias against younger drivers in general and teenagers in particular. Bring on the lawyers immediately!

I don't think it hurts you any to wear your seatbelt... I can't speak for a ford but even my 8 year old truck has good enough brakes to throw me out of my seat.

It's an option that he doesn't know how to disable. It's called MyKey and it's to help helicopter parents keep tabs on going drivers. When enabled the top speed can be limited to 80 with warning chimes at speeds of your choice, it will mute the radio, prevent traction control from being turned off and maybe some other stuff.

If it wasn't that it's the annoying repetitive chime they use.... I always wear my seatbelt but when Partridge hunting, crawling on the logging roads throughout the property? I Don't..... and If Ford was so damn smart why do they make the rear seat belt buckle that clicks into the driver's buckle? ;)

I disabled my driver side seat belt dinger so that when I'm riding around the farm I can get in and out and not be constantly annoyed but mine has never shut the radio off.

Thanks for the reply's and the info. I'm going to try and cut it off next time I see my dad. I'm sure he will be thankful. He said it drives him nuts.

No it doesn't hurt.

But there are times that require the non use of such.

Trucks are the last bastion of avoidance of the socially/politically correct types.

Leave the trucks alone.

so yeah, Ford MyKey is pretty much a Big Brother System for Teenage Drivers thought up by Paranoid Parents. (and from what MikeNH has mentioned before, some Rental Companies that have Fords Equipped with MyKey use the Speed Limiting Feature so the cars won't get beaten to death.)

I don't know for sure it was the rental company who turned it on in the first place, it's pointless to do since the other key on the key ring was the admin key. I just disabled it. It could've been a previous renter looking to mess with people. I may or may not occasionally switch voice prompts for Bluetooth on rentals to French. Same deal.

Darn, I should have done that to the '13 Cruze we rented back in June, because it had the MyLink Radio!

One of our work Expeditions had the speed capped at 80. Thankfully it wasn't the one I drive.

I still think the old fashioned " I catch you or hear about you driving like an idiot/not wearing a belt/racing, etc You lose the keys" system from the old man works better than this.... Hell I know I sure wouldn't have wanted to be seen without a belt and have it get back to him......
