Tailgate Theft / Additional Locks?

Was close to ordering a "Gate Keeper" but decided against it after some research. Read a few stories were the product was easily defeated and the tailgate was still taken. Guess there is enough of a gap to bend the clip out of the way using a screwdriver. Like to see a picture of one installed on a '14. Maybe the gap isn't as bad?

Eventually, I will purchase the power lock. In the meantime, this is what I did. I used a large hose clamp and a strip of inner tubing (to protect the metal and prevent the clamp from sliding). I did a dry fit and the end of the hose clamp was too long. If I were to close the tail gate, the metal from the hose clamp would have scratched the crap out of the tail gate. Therefore I had to trim the end of the hose clamp with a Dremel tool before installing it. Total cost, $2.46 with tax.

Went to install the pop and lock opened the box and low and behold there was no instructions, nor was there any retainer clip. Instruction were not a show stopper but the clip is.

Oh well, guess I'll call them Monday....

I received my Pop & Lock unit today. I had read your post earlier about the missing part so I opened it up to make sure everything was there. Crap! Same thing...the E Clip is missing. I called customer service & they transferred me to the technical support dept. saying they would help get one to me. Well, no one picked up & the message said to leave a message & they would call back. But, they didn't call. I'm beginning to wonder about this company.

Mr. mzodarg would you post & let me ( & others ) know if you got your missing part?

On the weekend I bought one of those:

CAD 19,- is much more than 2.50 for a hose clamp. I know.

But I'm hoping that it'll serve better 'cause it takes more than a screwdriver to open it.

so long

Yesterday when I initially called, same thing happened. I'm inpatient so I tried a couple more times and actually spoke to someone. They are sending me the missing part. Person I spoke to said there should have been a parts bag in the box. Told him there was no parts bag or instructions. I should have it this week.

It's a pretty standard clip.. if you don't feel like waiting you could pick up a few a Lowe's for $1. Just bring the metal cam arm for sizing (or did they also fail to send you that too?).

I keep mine locked as much to protect the tailgate from being stolen as it's to keep my tonneau cover from being stolen... it can be removed in 20 seconds with no tools.

If it didn't come connected to the motor, I didn't get it. That's what I told them so hopefully I get everything.

I use my truck bed frequently too and lock it each and every time, not sure why people have issue with that. But as ad added measure I did get this McGard unit which basically is a hose clamp in a plastic shell. But instead of a normal screw it has a keyed bit like a locking lug nut. It was probably $20 or so from Summit.

Then you're missing the clip & the cam (pic below).

Kit should also have included two sets of wires, one about 3' and the other about 8'

We'll as it turns out, I did get everything. There is a photo of something on the instructions that is somewhat in the shape of an "E" that I assumed was that clip.

Ok,thanks. I called them back and spoke to some lady. Let her know that all I got was the motor and 2 wiring harnesses. She said I should get the installation package early next week. Told her that other's would be calling as several people on a forum I belong to did not receive everything needed to install. We shall see....I'm leery!

Is this on a '14? I tried the same thing but I can't get it to tighten down enough with the tapered hinge.

Mine is a 2011. Not sure what options exist for the new rigs.

I don't lock mine.

17 years in insurance and never had one claim for a stolen tailgate (in the northeast). Plus I carry a $0 comp deductible so not an issue other than the hastle.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
