Truck Ordering / Delivery / Purchase Process ?

I'm a newcomer to this forum. Have been reading and watching for a few weeks. I'm in the market for something to replace my Toyota Tundra. I have bought Toyota for the last 10+years so I am not familiar with the GM buying process.
I spoke to the dealer where I have purchased a few Yukons in the past. I wanted a specific truck.
I gave them all the options I wanted based on the "build your own" on GMC website. Dealer tells me that they cannot even order one until sometime in April. Claims its due to the options I want and the way its set up.
I want a denali 4x4 6.2 long bed in black. I added a few options such as sunroof, lane departure, etc. So I went back to GMC website to "locate" a truck set up the way I want it. The site requests a zip code and gives me results from 3 or 4 dealers within an unknown radius of that zip code. None of those dealers has what I want, the website does not have the options to expand the radius in any way.
So, how do I find a truck I would be happy to purchase tomorrow? Seems counterproductive to not allow someone to order one the way they want and also not allow someone to search inventory through the manufactures website other than in a 10-20 mile radius. Do I really need to start looking up zip codes randomly and try each one at a time? That is ridiculous.
Just from the standpoint of a potential buyer I don't get it. Maybe dealer is bs'ing me but I called 3 local dealers and got the same story. Am I missing something? The truck is shown as being able to have the motor, bed, options I want yet I cant get one?? Is that asking too much? I know the Toyota system but not GM. Maybe I am looking for something that doesn't exist. IT would seem that in todays age of technology and people being able to track progress of their own vehicles from order to delivery that I could locate a truck somewhere in the country through the website without much difficulty. Someone tell me what I am doing wrong. Or do I just wait until April to try to order one.
Thanks

It has nothing to do with the options you want. It sounds like they have to much inventory and do not have an allocation from gm to order any trucks until April.

Check another dealer. Also check cars.com you can search by all kind of colors and options. Has your dealer tried to find one for you on another dealers lot? They can do a trade

I'd call GM directly and give them the exact configuration you want and have them do a nationwide search.

When it comes to ordering, you probably wouldn't see your truck until April. I order a 6.2L Denali on 11/6 and it hasn't even been built yet. Whenever you order a 6.2L, it'll be 8-12 weeks before you see it. I'll be lucky if I see mine before February.

Use cars.com, and when you find something close to what you want use the zip code of the dealer and look it up on Chevy.com....that's how I found my truck...in Arkansas

I guess I'm just used to Toyota. I have dealt with the same dealer for a decade. I get treated like a human with respect and courtesy.
I tried GMC dealer, ( have purchased only a couple vehicles from them) but I figured I would give them my business. They claimed it had nothing to do with them and was a GMC issue. Told me nobody could order one now. I called the only dealers listed on GMC website within my zip code and got the same story. I did cars.com and auto trader. The closest I could get was black/black 6.2 but short bed.

I use the truck for work so that bed doesn't fit for me.

I just fine it very strange that the GMC website doesn't give me the option to search any distance I would like. Almost as if they want to confine a purchaser to a specific location. They make it difficult to find what you want which is very strange business practice to me.

I don't understand why a customer would have to go through such effort to find a vehicle. If I am willing to buy one 1500 miles away why would gmc care?
Its just annoying as a purchaser, with all these secrets and hidden information. I don't know what constraint means, nor should I really need to. I don't care about allotments, or order history etc. I'm a potential customer. Toyota is very straightforward. They tell you what they can and cannot do. They don't try to get you to come in to look at something they have no intention of providing just to try to convince you to buy something else.
I see myself as the perfect buyer. I know exactly what I want, I am prepared to pay for it, I don't want to look over different options or test drive, or "think about it" for a while. What is easier than that for a dealer? Granted I have not tried to build my own and locate one through Toyota website. My dealer just tells me if he doesn't have one, if he can get one from another dealer, or if he can order one and how long that would take. No matter what I get an answer that makes sense. Not a "well, maybe in April we could order you one".
I spent 2 hours online trying to find a truck. Shouldn't be that difficult. So I gave up. I'll try Toyota again I suppose. I have no issues with my Tundra. I just wasn't overly thrilled with the '14 exterior styling. I figured the Denali 1500 looked good. For the most part the comments I read about it on this forum were positive so I was happy to give it a try. If I didn't like it I'd trade it on something else. I have never had such difficulty trying to buy a vehicle. It was easier getting my c7 than this truck.

I'll keep looking. I found zip codes about 1500 miles away which I will start looking through GMC website when I have hours to burn.

Don't know where you live, but as with many dealers, those that sell and move vehicles get more opportunities from GM to place orders for vehicles. Sounds like your local dealers haven't moved many trucks, hence why they don't get to carry higher end Denali's. If your willing to travel, use the advice I gave you a post ago....you don't need to use the GMC website to find your truck, in fact I find both the Chevy and GMC website archaic...like you said limited in its ability to search, plus it locks up all the time...maybe if you pits what exactly you're looking for, some of us here can help you find it....

Toyota also packages there options much better than GM...that's why it hard to find the exact truck you want without ordering it.

I had good luck on the GMC web site getting help from one of the watchers asked me if they could help locate the truck I wanted. Just hit the "chat" button and tell them what you want and they will list any truck any where that they show in stock, only problem is you will need to contact that dealer soon becasue they might have already sold it. :jester:

The best resource is going to www.cars.com and doing a search. You can use any mileage, 50 100, 250, 500, not no limit. Then you can search by Denali, Color, etc and that will narrow it down. You will not be able to search standard bed or short bed. You will have to look at each one. The short bed is 144" and the standard bed is 153"

I currently see 108, Black 2014 Sierra Denali available across the country. You will have to click each one individually to see the wheelbase, so you can know whether its standard or short bed. Thats the only bummer.

Best of luck!

I found a dealer who claims they can order me exactly what I want. I'm skeptical but gonna go sit with them and go over it.
When I built it online the msrp came out to $58.5. Looking to get an idea of what I should expect to actually pay for it. I haven't done a cold car purchase in so long I don't recall what percentage I could expect to see off the list. Maybe these days the list price is about all. All my recent purchases have been through fleet accounts so the price is the price and there isn't any negotiations. This dealer is already telling me how "hot" these trucks are right now and they are hard to get and the whole salesman 101 script.
Feel free to let me know your opinions on what would be considered excellent/good/fair/ price for this truck.
Am I nuts to think the $58k should come down under $50? I've heard there is a lot of room to move on trucks but of course that's all hearsay over drinks. I know its being ordered opposed to from inventory so there isn't much incentive from the dealers perspective or at least that's how I'd look at it. As always, that's for any input I've learned a bunch from this forum. All insight is appreciated.
My next late night research is on this "vibration" issue Ive started reading about. Got to figure out how to make sure I can notice it and point it out if I get one that has it.
Thanks

Use Steve's link above, that is a good starting point. They may be hot but they arent limited or anything. Love how the dealers play this. Just like with camaros (LE model) being "rare" etc. There are a ton out there and they are still building them for some time to come.

Another website to use as a resource is cargurus.com you can even sort by bed length. Good Luck with your search!

New to the site! Looking forward to conversing with everyone. I too had a somewhat similar experience. Had a couple dealers tell me they would be happy to order what I wanted but I shouldn't expect to get as much off MSRP since it was being built exactly as I wanted. I shopped around and found one that told me he could sell it to me for less if I ordered because it wouldn't be sitting on his lot "eating"! He was roughly 7k less than list price so I jumped on it. 6.2 Denali in Sonoma red. Honestly, these were the only folks I talked to that I believe were interested in what "I" wanted. Somebody out there wants YOUR business. Don't settle for just being sold a truck! Good luck!

Anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new TOY!

I don't understand some if these dealers and I used to work at a few... I did most order outs for invoice the customer got a good deal and I got the holdback no games and we sat at the computer together and built the truck I found the buyers knew more about the options they wanted and availability than I did so I just listened and together we got it done don know why some dealers have to make it so hard
