I rarely see anyone open carry. When I wear my shoulder holster, I always have a jacket on. You have to have a CCL in order to open carry.

The State House just recently passed the constitutional carry here in OK. So now I expect the same as it was when open carry became legal with the ccl, people will do it at the beginning, then stop again if it passes the State Senate. IMHO, open carry defeats the purpose of carrying. It makes you a target or the intending idiot will go else where to a soft target rich environment.

Interesting thread. I'll be getting my concealed carry permit for Illinois in the near future. I remember seeing somewhere though a safe that fit in the center console. This would be helpful when I didnt want to take the gun into the grocery store or a building that didn't allow concealed carry.

Anyone know what Im talking about?

No, you should never leave your gun in your car, whether it is locked or not, there are always ways to get at it. and if your car is stolen your safe is worthless then. And why would you ever leave your ccw in your car when you go into a store. You're kind of missing the point of the C and C there

What about when you go pick your kids up at school? It's a felony to carry a firearm into a school...

I just used the grocery store as an example.

You don't bring it with you when you go to a school then. It is never good to leave a firearm in your vehicle. As a firearm owner you are responsible for your firearm. Do you really want to see your pistol stolen when your vehicle is broken into or stolen, and then find out its been turned around and in the hands of a criminal?

So my original comment about a safe that gets mounted to the inside console has its value.

Reviving an old thread here, but my Glock 19 inside of an IWB holster sits perfectly on the side of the center console next to my thigh. Slides forward for easy access and removal.

How stable is that clip? I'd imagine that if you went to draw it the holster would come with the gun.

Exactly what I was thinking. I like the concept though!

The holster clip is pretty sturdy and when it's slid back between the seat and the console, it sits pretty snug between the two so it doesn't slide around when I drive. It has a little hook designed to go around a belt that hooks in really well to the side console. If you feel up under the lip of the side console storage area, there are actually rigid grooves towards the top inside and they work really well together with the holster hook to keep it connected to the console.

The holster I have does not have that heavy of a retention on the gun. If I draw the gun, the belt hook easily keeps the holster in place. I have to use two hands to release the holster from the console when I'm removing it from my truck.

I'm familiar with the holster (g-code incog) although I don't have one so I wasn't sure what the retention is like. Also don't have the center console in my truck so wasn't sure about a lip or anything. Seems like an ok solution in a pinch.

That said, I really caution everyone here that if you're going to have a second storage location for long rides in your truck it really should be a permanently mounted one and if you're using it to store when going somewhere firearms aren't allowed you should be out of sight. One thing to note is that some states laws require that the pistol be on your person when in a vehicle or in a locked container. Not looking to mom people here, you're all big boys that can decide for yourselves.

amazingly under the rear seatback of a crewcab by the jack a 16" A/R will tuck in quite nicely and not rattle around, so I have heard
