RECALL (3/28/14) Transmission Line Leak

I also work in aviation. Specifically, I work for an airliner manufacturer in engineering regulatory certification and compliance. I've been to China to discuss safety issues with their regulatory agency. They are intelligent people with a thirst for becoming the world leader in modern manufacturing. Trust me. They will be a world class manufacturer of automobiles before most of us would guess.

 

As an example, look at Japan. In the 60s and 70s people made fun of their cars as second rate junk. That really began to change around that time. By the 80s people were bragging about their Japanese cars. U.S. makers were caught flat footed and actually learned from them. By the 90s clearly the highest quality cars were being made by the Japanese makers. U.S. makers have come a long ways today. I'm convinced we have better American cars because of the Japanese competition.

Checked mine, fittings are tight and no leaks. 01/14 build date 5.3L, Crew Cab, 4x4.

 

Took me a min to find it, on the 4x4 it is under the drive shaft connecting the transfer case to the front diff.

 

Just slide in under the drivers side door and look for the pan.

This issue seems way overblown to me. Maybe 10 vehicles had leaks. Most folks would see the smoke from the tranny fluid on the exhaust long before it could catch fire. I'd be upset if the tranny was failing. One chance in thousands that your truck has a leak. I can't get upset over that. I bought a '98 S-10 ZR2 new back in '97. I drove it straight home and found it was leaking from the remote engine oil filter when I got out of it. I took it back, they fixed it, and I drove the thing for 16 years and only replaced the fuel pump at 110,000 miles. It was a great little truck with one screw up from the factory, big deal! I've been driving my '14 Silverado for going on 5 months and it's been flawless. I expect this truck to e as good as my old S 10. I'll have them check the fittings when I go in for my free oil change. Who's sniveling about that.

After all the recalls and problems with this model, this goes way above and beyond the "one little issue". It would be one thing on a $8k Smart car .... it's an entirely different ballgame on a $50k truck.

How about who here believes this is an issue that unreasonably endangers them?

 

Who doesn't believe general motors would be breaking your door down with a huge check if your truck burned to the ground?

 

If none of the above, take it to the dealer and be happy they did their job. If you can't deal with this issue, maybe a Toyota stuck throttle issue that seems to be somewhat undefrocked is for you.

All the recalls? I had one other, the original "fire recall" but had no fire and it too seemed overblown and took all of twenty minutes of my time.. They also replaced my sliding rear window regulator which also was working fine without my even asking. I'll bet if I don't bring my truck in on this one it would never develop a leak anyway. Funny thing, I bought an El Camino new like the one on your trailer forty some years ago. It fouled a plug after 11 months. I took it in but told them I needed it for a trip and couldn't leave it until I returned. They didn't honor the warranty because I had it more than 12 months when I returned. When I pulled it apart I found that the number seven cylinder never had a valve seal installed at the factory. THAT pissed me off. This thing is silly in comparison.

 

My '14 Silverado is by far the nicest vehicle I've ever owned and that includes a bunch over about 50 years. The first being a '57 Chevy that I wish I still had.

2 recalls is 2 TOO MANY .... but hey, it's your money.

 

That El Camino there I bought heavily used and in an extremely poor state of tune. For $300 I had the thing chirping second, running a 15.8 @ 88 mph (if I could get traction off the line), & stopping/turning like a brand new car.I drove that as my daily driver for 4 years. Pulled an enclosed U-Haul trailer loaded with everything I owned at the time from CA to MA, turning 4k RPM from sunrise to sunset for 4 days straight. Pounded the hell out of it for 2 years on rough Massachusetts roads. Sat in my barn for 4 years, and fired up after a few tries on the 4 year old fuel. Like an idiot, I sold it.

 

My '07 SIlverado had pulsating brakes with just 47 miles on the clock - been back to the dealer under warranty at least 5x for that .. one of which resulted in the entire passenger side from bumper to bumper getting smashed in by a lot tech .... lower ball joints failed at 38k miles. Uppers are done at 67k miles currently. Puffs smoke on start up. Has more squeaks and rattles than the '94 K1500 with 266k miles on it that I sold to accessorize this one!!

 

I'd take my trusty El Camino back any day of the week! The amount of money I'd have saved ........ well, I don't even want to think about that.

The subject vehicles may have a transmission oil cooler line that is not securely seated in the fitting.CONSEQUENCE:If the line is not securely seated and transmission oil leaks from the fitting, the oil could contact a hot surface and cause a vehicle fire.REMEDY:GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmission oil cooler line connection and repair the vehicles, as needed, free of charge. The dash in the last Dodge Ram 3500 I tested came up in Spanish and KPH. Fixed the KPH, couldn't figure out the rest.

I just bought my truck at the beginning of March, so this will be my first recall. I'm assuming any previous recalls that affected my truck had been performed before I ever picked it up. My truck has been flawless since I've had it. It really is head and shoulders better than any of my previous GM trucks too.

 

I don't see why some get so upset about a simple recall like this. All of my previous GM trucks have had recalls and TSBs come out after purchase, and when issues came up, GM and the dealers fixed them. A slight inconvenience, but hardly something to get upset about.

 

I will wait for my letter and then have my dealer take a look.

Don't assume all previous were taken care of, but Dealer service department can check. All depends upon timing of delivery, make ready, etc. Some dealerships are good about it and others aren't. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Just be glad they actually have a recall system in place with laws backing it. Years ago it was all at the manufacturers discretion.
