GMC warranty at a Chevy dealer?

Recommended Posts

Posted

When my sales guy switched from GMC to a Chevy dealership he said bring any gm trucks in and I did, warranty recalls etc... When I was looking at a new vehicle he said i could also by any GM product from them, even certified used that they bid on GM auctions of lease turn ins etc...

They Chevy dealer he works at now try'd screwing my wife over a oil leak issue in 2001, and I would have never bought there again, but now I have the inside guy and became well acquainted with the service & parts dept. It good to get to know the service guys, I had a borderline issue with a cadiallac and they let if fly and searched a loop hole to get it fixed.

I've seen some dealers advertise they do all gm vehicle servicing.

I have a friend who is service manager and part owner (family) of a GMC/Buick dealership. I asked him about this not long ago when he turned away a Chevy PU owner who walked in the door complaining about his truck problems. He said they are obligated to service any GM vehicles they sell be it new or used but beyond that its up to him. He said they prefer to let the brand dealers )Chevy etc) handle warranty work. He also mentions that he does not want to get in the middle of any dispute with another dealer and the customer, said it happened before and all he got was a more grief from the disgruntled customer when he came to the same conclusion as the Chevy dealer.

He also mentioned that in the past he has done warranty repairs on a sub-contract basis where his shop did the repairs but it was processed thru the Chevy dealer. He said that was arranged by GM service reps.

I stopped in on a local GMC dealer and ask the service manager if they would do the warranty work. They have handle other work on our vehicles in the past. He reply no problem.

Dealer here... we are obligated to fix what we sell. We have no obligation to fix the things we did not sell, even in the same brands. Is it a good practice to turn away business? No, of course not. But we have every right to turn away a local guy that buys somewhere else and only wants freebies from us with no intention of ever spending a nickel in my store... he can take it back to where he bought it... that or we'll book him in for 6 weeks from the 3rd Thursday of the next month with less than 31 days in it... subject to priority customers not bumping him out.

We will always service a customer that bought from us ahead of someone that refuses to buy from us. Don't like it? Don't buy out of town

That is a garbage attitude. Setting aside whether GMC can warranty Chevy and vise versa being given the cold shoulder would be cause for me never to darken the door of your dealer for anything. When I was at the dealer I could give two shits whose sticker was slapped on the trunk of the car, sales and service are two separate ends of the business.

From Chevrolet

Q. Can I take my Chevrolet to any GM dealership for warranty repairs?

A. These repairs must be performed by an Authorized Chevrolet dealer, except in an emergency situation when a covered part or a Chevrolet dealer is not reasonably available to the vehicle owner. It’s in your best interest to take your Chevrolet vehicle to a Chevrolet dealer for all repairs since they are the most knowledgeable about the particulars of your vehicle.

I don't understand why it would matter. Besides a few cosmetic differences they're the same freaking truck! Someone explain this to me...

This is almost certainly a product of upper-management dysfunction at GM. It wouldn't surprise me at all if there are incompatibilities between brands with computer systems at the dealership.

A dealer will likely have their franchise revoked for continual refusal of repair work on same brand vehicles sold elsewhere other than the servicing dealer. Aside from that, quite a few dealers make more money from the service department than they do sales.

In my experience theres 2 types of dealers, good ones and the kinds that other members spoke off. If a dealer refused u for service, would you buy from them? Probally not.....

If they gave you good service and took care of you its a good way for them to gain your future business.

Id rather drive a hour away and trust they are fixing my truck right then going to some clowns that are not professional.

These poorly managed dealerships will drive the customer base away eventually.

That's what's wrong with car dealers service and parts departments.

It is funny to see GMC and Chevy truck accessories (dealer's websites) with the same part number but GMC charges more for the same part and labor to install. Why is there a price difference at least in this area?

This is hilarious. In Canada, or at least Alberta, the dealerships are GM dealerships and have both brands. The service departments are GM Goodwrench at all of them. You can take you GM vehicle anywhere you want no questions asked. The dealerships actually heavily advertise "service specials" and things like that trying to get you to go to theirs. When I bought my truck the salesman literally told me I could take it anywhere I want.
