GMC warranty at a Chevy dealer?

I was just browsing the internet and found a post that said "good luck trying to get a Chevy dealer to warranty a GMC truck" is there any truth to this? It never even crossed my mind because my home town dealer sells both and same with the place I bought the truck. It went on to say the because of this it's better to get a chevy because there's more dealers out there if something happened on a trip it might be harder to find a GMC dealer.

I know it used to be that way. I thought part of the post-bankruptcy restructuring was allowing warranty at any GM dealer but I'm not certain on this.

The chevy dealer i worked for did warranty work on any gm vehicles.

I've had work done on my GMC at a Chev dealer, a days drive from where I bought it.

GM used to want you to use the brand the vehicle is made from, but you can cross use brands if needed or if the same brand is not in the area.

Chevy dealer did all my recalls and the free oil change so far on my gmc. I dont know why they wouldnt do the warrenty work they will get paid from gm for it

my chevy dealer mentioned they could now gmc oil changes that come free with the truck

The Chevy dealership would not do any warranty or recall work on my GMC.

it's up to the dealer. I bought a 2012 GMC after a few months of having it started to leak oil. I took it to a local chevy dealer, they really pissed me off because they were lying to me. they said that they cannot work on GMC vehicle because they are different from Chevrolets. I looked at them with my WTF face and then the service manager continued to tell me that since it is a GMC that GM wont let them work on it. then he said to take the truck back were I bought it from. I was pissed, not because they wouldn't work on it but, because he was lying to me and attempting to play me as a fool, don't lie to me ad just tell me outright that you don't want to do the warranty work on it. I'm sure that this doesn't matter but I will never go to them for anything, which sucks because I like supporting local business like that in my small suburb town but, to hell with them.

 

anyways the moral of the story is it is 100% up to the dealer if they want to do warranty work on the vehicle I believe. My dad tried calling GM to make a complaint but he lost signal during the phone call and never heard back from GM again.

The Chevy dealership would not do any warranty or recall work on my GMC.

Think often times its up to the dealer and if theres another dealer in town or how far away.

I remember some years ago calling the GM hotline about this issue. I was dissatisfied with my local GMC dealer and wanted to know if I could take it to my local Chevy dealer. The guy on the phone informed me that was not possible since other GMC dealers were close by. He said unless it were a longer drive then I'd have to stick with brand specific dealers. I really hope this has changed by now.

My son bought a 2010 Silverado from a local Cadillac dealer's previously owned department. They encouraged him to bring it back for all of his service and said they work on all GM brands. The parent company also owns a Chevy dealership, "so they have Chevy expertise", he said. My wife has a Pontiac which is serviced at the local GMC, who told me they would be happy to service my Chevy. I still take my Chevy to the dealer I bought from since they a re a large dealer with lots of experience and treat me great.

 

Anyway, it does sound like it depends upon the individual dealer. Doesn't hurt to ask, though!

My dealer said, and this was awhile ago, that GM would pay the claims but would give them a lot of grief on it (parts inspections, etc.) to the point it wasn't worth it if they were taking a noticable amount of business from that brand's dealer within 25 miles

I work at a Chevy/Cad store. We work on all GM vehicles. Current and historic as in Pontiac, Olds, Hummer etc. Warranty or customer pay. Been that way for many years.
