I am also curious on how the bed hit the cab of the truck. That is crazy. Hopefully it is written off.

By the looks of it, the car was going pretty fast. So when it hit up on the tail gate it wouldv'e pushed the whole bed forward. I've been through this kind of accident before...not fun.

Got rearended years ago with with a 83 silverado. Got the bumper and tailgate. Had a ding in the back of cab also. Body guy looked at back and then walked straight to cab to check it. Pretty common. They may have to loosen the bed up and realign it. I think it will be alright but I feel your pain. Mine had only 14,000 miles on it when it got hit. I made sure they put new parts on it. The insurance company was going to look for used parts for mine till I called my agent and said no way.

I will look into it again, but I have a feeling I'm just flat out of luck. Michigan is a no-fault state only allows diminished value to cover deductible.

I could never understand how someone could be paying so little attention while driving, that they rear end someone and cause this much damage. Let me guess; they were texting? The only thing no fault does is protect reckless drivers, and gives the bill to those who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I hope you're ok and you can get your truck fixed atleast.

Hate to say it, but an 83 Silverado is built a little tougher then the new ones are. Back then, Chrome bumper meant really metal. And the bodies and frames them selves were built using stronger - but heavier being the trade off.

The times when I'm feeling a road rage to a stupid drive - I just wish I had an early 80's truck. Point the nose and go. Whatever gets in the way - speed bump.

Geez.. I would never feel right driving it around from the looks of what happened. Hopefully they total it out and you get a new truck and can put those nice wheels and tires on the new one.

$4300 for a bent frame and that amount of body damage? sheesh whoever you went to quote for must be thirsty for work. that seems like a bargain.

Sure does. I think the cost to fix my 2011 was $3400, and it wasn't nearly as bad as the OP's truck. Mine was only backed into slowly.

Probably would have agreed with you a few years ago until I watched this.

While it is not a '83 Silverado, same concept.

Potential claims of diminished value aside (likely BS anyhow since shops don't have to report repairs), there is no reason to worry if you bring the truck to a good shop.

My point is that not all repairs, even major ones will show up on carfax. So the risk of a value loss is hit or miss and assuming it was a non-issue, I'd be fine having my truck repaired. As for buying a rebuild? I'd be bringing along my friend who's family owns a body shop in a case like that.

After I traded in my 2011 I checked the Carfax report that my dealer had on their website for it. Nothing what so ever on their about it being to the body shop for repair.

I thought the same thing...I'm going to go to a few more shops for estimates.

The ins company tells the body shop how much they will pay for labor and parts just like health ins. When a shop calls for parts they tell them it is a ins job for what ever company holds the policy and they use their buying power. If you were to get a cash quote you would see a very steep difference. I have several year experience doing this type of work and your quotes are right as your truck looks to be an easy fix.

I wouldn't say the old frames are anywhere near in strength to the new ones ... The sheet metal was thicker, but as of a result, those 80s trucks where also death traps because they had a infant design of crumple zones.

Bed likely contacted the cab because the frame sprang upwards. Fairly common.
