Thinking ahead - Rust Proofing???

Don't drive in the snow/salt? :D

My rust proofing consists of living where it has only rained twice in the past 6 months. lol

I live in Michigan, and they use more salt/brine per lane mile than any other state in the nation. I believe that is 22.9 Tons per lane mile annually. I would imagine Toronto is the same as the Mid-West and North East US, being right in between us?

Yes, I got mine rustproofed, undercoated, sound deadener, paint sealant, and fabric protection.

I figured I would get things coated before the rust got a hold on the frame. They clean it and recoat every year to stay on top of it.

Hey, I Live in Hamilton but had my truck undercoated with Ziebart permanent undercoating at Uni-Glass Plus in Mississauga.

Its a waxy type undercoating, on the underside they use a heavier abrasion resistant black product and a golden coloured product under the hood and in doors.

I've always used the "no-drip oil" sprays but like this much better for brand new vehicle.

Charged me $400.00 the first application, and $50.00 each year after for inspection and touch up of any spots that rubbed off.

Ziebart here has something where its free after the first year. Dont know price. But then you have the hassle of going back.

I guess you have to look at it from a logical perspective, where do you live and hows the salt usage. How have your vehicles faired in the past. Also newer vehicles tend to rust less than cars of the past.

Also how long do you keep vehicles. If like me where you only keep it 2-4 years is it worth it, ehh I dont know. But if your a drive till it dies kind of guy, it might be. There are cons as well, the undercoating can be a pain to work on things and have had friends repairs cost more because mechanics had a hard time getting at things.

To me unless you do it the first year doesnt make sense to do it after a winter has gone by specially with the undercoating, oil might be a different story

I go to Krown oil spray every September. I'm trading in a 2004 Sierra, 300,000 km, after driving through 10 Ontario winters and there is not a speck of rust on it. I plan on continuing with the oil spray on my 2014 SLT.

Years ago yes. Now you shouldn't have to. I had a 83 that I had rust proofed. I know it saved it. My '95 I never done anything but pressure washed the fender wells etc. once in a while. It has no rust coming through anywhere and I had a 1/2 mile of gravel, and I drive a mile into lime plant every day I work. They have come a long way on them. Didn't do anything to my 14 but a good wax job.

Last truck was a 1999 silverado 5.3. Still have it after 15 yrs. rusted like crazy. New truck has ziebart now. About $699. One price for the life of the vehicle. Free respraying every year. Hope it helps

Your owner's manual says don't do it.

Probably so in 10 years you come back for a new one, and spend $80k.

I spray Fluid Film on the frame before every Winter. Never had an issue with rust. My dealer refused to do any sort of undercoating on this truck; claimed it would void the GM warranty.

No matter what you do, take you truck to a spray wash weekly and spray the underside of the truck down good..during the salt season I'm there 2 times a week if I'm driving my truxk

Thks for the comments guys. I'm going to check with my dealer first re:warranty then make a decision.

I have probably 1/10 the knowledge of most posters here when it comes to this type of stuff but I thought vehicles and rust were a thing of the past?

Mine was done through the dealer at an independent contractor BEFORE I took delivery, so if GM isn't on the hook, they are. This was a Dealer added option, similar to all the other dealer added options. I asked about this before hand, and they said it didn't effect my warranty. My cousin was my salesman, so he better not have lied to me! This may mean through them? You might want to pin them down a little more, or get an official GM answer. I buy my trucks to keep for several years, not to trade off in 3 or 4. If you trade off every few years, then it will be the next owners problem. You do get a higher resale value whey you trade or sell here in my area, if it has been rustproofed.

If you go to Ziebart or similar AFTER you take delivery, then YOU may be on the hook? Just like the guys that add the lift kits after they take delivery. The dealer added lift kits are still warrantied through GM and the dealer.

You obviously don't live in Michigan, or you never leave the pavement? They salt/brine the paved roads for six months during the winter, and brine the gravel roads for the other six months of non-winter here. I live 2-1/2 miles from the nearest pavement, 3-1/2, the way I like to go. There are 5 year old Rams driving around here with rust through right above the rear wheel wells. See them every day. Only takes about 10 years for a GM or Ford to look the same.

Most of my vehicles end up in the 250,000 - 300,000 mile range before I get rid of them. So to me, in my geographical location, it is a good investment.
