Took truck In for dic updates, now my display doesn't work... Mechanic said I'll need a new display cluster!?!? No loaner car... Extremely disappointed driving around in my brand new truck with a display that doesn't work....

Note this is a 2014 gmc sierra smh still waiting to hear back from my dealer attachicon.gifIMG_20140712_102152.jpg

im going to take a guess and say that the mechanic downloaded the wrong file or they previously did a chev and still had the chev file on their computer but havent yet downloaded the GMC version, or didnt realize the have different splash screes.

i have a Sierra and had this update done, i have all GMC logos and its all working fine as far as i can tell, there is most likely 2 versions of the update.

Is this odometer fix a recall or tsb?? I have heard both in this thread. My truck doesn't have it listed on there recall page. I just have the neutral recall...

According to one of the service techs on here,

"It's not a recall. It is a "service update". Odometer may read different when opening door vs key on. "

It is a "campaign" . But that in and of it self doesn't mean much. Under the header of "campaign" they have recalls, service updates, special policies, and a few others that I cain't recall at this time. TSB's are a different thing altogether. Generally, the only ones you will be notified of are actual "recalls". Special policies generally mean an extended waranty for a very specific problem such as timing chains on some 3.6L engine that they cover for 120k I think. Or fuel senders on some Trailblazers. They can be seen when dealer personel run the vin. You may or may not be notified of these.

Sorry long post.

FWIW - I took my GMC Sierra in yesterday to have the Shift to Neutral recall done. I consider this dealership a top notch Dealership. They have always done right by me. While getting paperwork set up, Service Manager said data base also was showing that the truck needed the gauges update. While there I also asked him to check for any radio updates. He said the updates would take a couple of hours and put me in a nice Buick loader. All was good.

About 5 hours later I received a call that the truck was finished, but Service Manager needed to talk to me. When I arrive he said that the Shift to Neutral recall was done, but the gauges data download kept locking up. Service Tech at dealership called the GM Tech center and was told that the downloaded files for the gauges update is so large that any change in data line speed, or line voltage drops will lock the download up. Tech Center said if data line has no issues at all the download will go through, but any small data line issue will stop the files from downloading. GM Tech Center told the Service Tech that the Dealership in the future will need a dedicated data line for these large downloaded files.

Service Manager told me they were going to rescheduled me for the gauges update at a later date in August. When I asked why the long wait for a service appointment he said the GM Tech Center told him they were preparing a large all encompassing file update that will address a number of issues including any radio updates. He said since I wasn't having any current issues with the gauges by waiting a while I had a better chance of getting the all encompassing file update.

Again I've had no issues with any work or recalls the dealership has done in the past for me, so this all sounded reasonable to me, but not so sure Service Manager wasn't feeding me a line of BS. Has anyone else had problems with the gauges file download or heard anything similar about large file downloads?

Good info @bronzey. It appears the dealerships are required to download this large file from the mothership (gm) each time which if true is the dumbest thing ever. They should be able to download the file locally, transfer to ther tech scanner or whatever 2014 advanced tool in there current arsenal and update the software directly (no data line/interference etc..) would occur. They seem like their still stuck in 1999 technology doing that type of software update.

I'm sitting in a dealership now waiting on an oil change the only recall listed on my Denali was the shift to neutral, no gauge recall. I don't have time for the recall tonight and have never experienced it so I will wait.

Sent from Windows Phone.

The Denali has a different cluster no? The recalls are on the lower models with the digital display I believe could be wrong

Today I was in for the trans cooler recall when I was informed of the gauge recall, service writer indicated they were having trouble with long (2 hr) download. I will wait until that issue is corrected or maybe not have it done at all. If it's not broken don't fix it.

Well took my truck in today for the leaking third brake light and he said there was a recall for the odometer. They said they will take care of it while it was there but they were backed up on electronic work so it would take a while. Now I am wondering if I should call them and tell them not to mess with it after reading here. I was also having issues with the parking brake light not illuminating or door chimes sounding when the truck is in drive and the parking brake is applied.

I wouldn't worry to much it was just a mistake of the techs rushing through the process and installing the wrong program for the screen in the spedo from chevy to gmc just make sure you check it the first thing you do before you drive away and address the problem If need be

Took mine in last Friday for the transfer case recall as well as the odometer. Was quoted 2 hours to do both. Truck was done in an hour and a half. No complaints here.
