Lights behind grill

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever smoked a light bar so it doesn't stand out as much. I have a Sierra AT and every light bar ive seen behind the grill stands out like a sore thumb. One or two coats shouldnt knock the light output down that much should it? I also noticed Rigid has released a blacked out model at the SEMA Show. Unfortunately they're way out of my price range. Hopefully the Chinese knock offs will follow suit.

I was thinking about doing that when I do my bar in my all terrain. Except i was thinking of doing it with a sheet of tint or laminx

Anyone have a picture of an install behind a High Country grill? Bought a 30" Rigid dual combo bar. Should be here tomorrow. Wondering how much light will be blocked by the horizontal bars of the grill or if there is enough space between that light output won't be significantly affected.

I installed a 30' Baja Designs ONX6 behind my high country...very little light blocked...the thing is ridiculously bright..I will try to get some pics tomorrow for you..the HC grill is good because the slots go all the way across.. i adjusted mine so it shoots light right between the slots.

Thanks for the info-good to know. Was also worried about the indention running down the middle of the grill causing issues. Hoping to install today. Will post pics if I do.

Better late than never, I had the grill off again, here's some pics:

I made some aluminum brackets to attach to the angled supports behind the grill. Clearly I need to get some stainless screws haha.

I know yhis was posted a year ago but these brackets are sharp man....GOOD JOB i am surprised theres not a dozen ppl ask you how you made them unless i over looked it. Did you Mcguever them or are you a machinist

Thanks man, my light hasn't budged one bit since I installed them and the stainless screws I added after really helped the look. No one asked me how I made them because they were too busy buying them. As for making the brackets, I am a machinist so it only made sense to do something like this. I'm actually just starting another batch of these, if you're interested in a set feel free to shoot me a private message. I was going to put them on eBay but never got around to it when I got flooded with requests right off this forum.

Who here is experienced in how the spot/flood combo works? I was under the impression on is on and off is off and that there is no seperate switches for FLOOD and SPOT. the best deal i found sa far at 18000 lumens is a Mictuning .... here is a link to it on amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LAVVEL2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A15H3UKRB6RHF9 Look at one of the reviews that the guy is sharing his install with illistrated pictures and let me know what you think... Why 2 switches? can i run it off of 1 switch? is there 2 set of wires off thi led bar? It is listed 2 seperate ways on amazon, with wire and without wiring kit. I soon as i hear from a few of you guys i will pull the trigger or change directions.

you only need one switch. he has another light for that switch. the bar is on off only, combo means that the outer lenses are diffused for a flood beam while the center lens isn't so it produces a spot beam.

Thanks Gab, that's kind of what I was thinking but his description, pictures and the fact that it comes with that wiring kit and switches throws me off. I guess the seller put a wiring kit package for some one that is adding to a set up that already has a light bar.

Not a huge fan of drilling through that thing. I made a clamp that uses U bolts to hold on the light bar. Ill attach a PDF that you can print, trace, cut, modify to your own needs.

Looks just what I'm looking for! I dont want to drill either. How has it held up? Any thing you would change? Any tips? What bar did you put on? Thanks!

VHT Nightshades is used regularly for tinting tail lights I wonder if this would work on a light bar and give the same end result as the new Rigid dark one?

I have put on 6000km with the bar mounted this way. It has held up fine to bumpy roads and various obstacles.

The light bar is a 30" TopNotch Bar: https://www.partsengine.ca/p-59427-topnotch-combo-beam-curved-led-light-bars-20-30-40-50.aspx

I wish that I was in my Dad's shop when I fabricated the mount. I used a hack saw and a hand drill. If I would have had a cut off wheel, drill press, air tools it would have been a much nice product. I would have trimmed some of the excess fat. Possibly drill out some of the bulk of the material.

Overall I was happy with the dimensions and fit.

I WARN YOU - If you are using a different bar make sure the dimensions work for you. This is based off my light bar and I cant guarantee you will have similar results with different bars.

If you have any more questions let me know.

I got my OPT7 32" light bar today and thought I would let you guys know what I think of it. HEC YEAH!!! If I would have known it was this quality I would have went ahead and ordered the C2 but I got the C1. I will install it this week end and let you know how well it performs. The wiring kit is very well made. I plan on mounting the switch in place of one of the cigerette 12v socket. I seen this done by another member and I like this switch because you can still close the cover. Looks really clean and factory.
