What's amateurish about being cheap, raising prices through the roof and still being able to find buyers for such trucks? Sounds like they are professionals.

You lost me on that one.

Here is what mine looks like (Bought NEW 6/2014) (BUILD DATE 10/13) 1500 miles

Mine is going to the dealer monday for the TSB. They had to order the (correct )product per the TSB to fix this, and they are going to put me in a nice loaner for a couple of days while they fix it. I think its so crazy that I have to get rust fixed on a brand new 45k vehicle, but I'm going to let the dealership make it right.

They have also offered to do a free (dealer installed) undercoating job as well. I don't know much about this so I'm not sure if I want to take them up on it or not.

To the OP, things like this bother me. I would call your dealer ASAP and have them do the TSB. ALL 2014 Silverado/Sierra qualify for it no matter what they try to tell you. If they try to act like its no big deal (they all do it) call GM directly and open a case. That is what I did and I had the SM calling me in 5 minutes after that to schedule an appointment.

Good luck and I will report back to this thread next week when I get my truck back.

Yep same rust in the same exact spots. In my case the dealer gave me the run around and tried to say my vehicle was not included in the "recall" for this but that they would push it through anyway to help me out. As I detailed a few posts back, they did a completely different repair job than the TSB you are talking about where they keep it for a few days and properly deal with the frame. I hate GM for making such a shitty product and I hate the dealer for having such a shitty service department.

I called GM directly and they spoke directly to the dealer on this issue. If it still looks bad Im sure you could get it done correctly

I think I'm just going to buy some black rubber spray coating and just cover it up myself. I doubt it will ever be a structural issue....not for as long as I'll own the truck anyway.

agreed. its all just surface rust. My 2002 silverado looked like that all over the frame when I traded it in 2010. Was still fine.

GM sells the exact coating under part number 12346501. It is an excellent match of the original factory applied coating.

It was probably applied incorrectly, on dirty frames, or applied on frames that were already rusted (BINGO).

I don't think anyone is saying that there will be structural damage or integrity issues. It's just a really shitty feeling when you purchase a $51,665 truck and undercoating is falling off and the frame has rust everywhere, and it only has 3000 miles on it.. When I traded in my 2009 CrewCab Silverado I was proud to say that it didn't have any rust anywhere because it was properly undercoated.

Edit: and yes, I am aware that GM has offered to reapply the undercoat, and that's just a cop out for allowing these frames to be put on these trucks and then let out the factory gate.

Applying undercoat is done with a bare frame not after all the components are installed. To do it correctly you would have to strip it down. They can cover the currently exposed spots but the other bad spots will reveal themselves eventually.

Edit: If GM doesn't think it's a big deal why don't they just keep producing them this way. Who cares what we think. Why are they correcting the undercoat problem, just don't do anything about it. If it's not a big deal.

Thanks I'll look into that.

GM just doesn't make the quality product that they used to make. There really isn't much left to say about it. It is what it is.

Somehow one would not conclude this just from looking at the sticker price.

That's the crappiest part though. They charge more for these trucks than the GMT900's yet they are having way more quality issues. I personally will pay for something no matter the cost if it's worth it to me. For instance, GM uses this crap wax coating on the frame to save money. But I would gladly pay $2,000 more for the truck if the frame were galvanized......that price increase is justifiable and worth it to me. But these K2 trucks easily cost $10,000 more than equivalent GMT900 models and the quality seems to be worse. That's what I don't get.

You really do not have to galvanize truck frames to stay corrosion free. There are coatings out there like inorganic zinc paints that would make these frames look like new for years. There are also ruberized coatings like Mercedes Benz used on their 80's cars that are virtually indestructible unless mechanically damaged. I have one of those cars and the chassis is corrosion free after almost 30 years.

I would definitely pay a $ 2k premium for better paint, better quality sheet metal, and better quality powertrain components throughout. Paying $ 10k premium for getting a cheaper, lower quality truck in not acceptable in my book.

Completely agree on all points. And I was just throwing "galvanized" out there. Heck the wax on my 2007 Silverado held up just fine for 7 years. But yes at hte end of the day, the point is these trucks cost more than previous models and the premium doesn't seem justified with the issues they're having and that's what is frustrating.

I brought my truck in for the seat repair and asked the dealer to look at the rust on the frame. As expected they responded that it is normal. All the other trucks on the lot seem to have similar surface rust. I picked up some rust encapsulator by Eastwood and a can of 3M undercoating, I'm considering coating all visible frame rust with the combo. The rear also has surface rust and may get a coat as well. I've looked under every truck I could find these days and all used trucks show surface rust. None I could see a few new toyotas I looked at. I don't think it's a real issue for concern, but it is annoying to see on a truck that was built only 8 months ago.

    • HD at the moment, are kinda their own deal.  How LTZ sells on those vs on 1500, there is a difference.   They are merging most of the mid trims on 1500.  LT, RST and LTZ are replaced by one trim, Silverado.  LT and RST are a BIG portion of sales.    Bad naming choice aside, the new Silverado trim will offer the spread of options that those three trims offered.  So expect to see things like the tech package for example, and memory seats.  And LT Trail Boss will now just be "Trail Boss" (formerly LT Trail Boss) but will offer content spread like the new Silverado trim will.  The press photos showed the Trail Boss (formerly LT Trail Boss) has access to Super Cruise now, which on the current truck was High Country only.       Here is the Trail Boss interior.  Memory seats and Super Cruise are present.  All things the LT Trail Boss it replaces, and the RST it was based on didn't get on the current gen.  You had to go to LTZ or ZR2 for memory seats, and High Country for Super Cruise.
    • I installed a Hellwig rear sway bar on my 21 Sierra SLT, it made a huge difference on how the truck handles, no body roll, the trucks much more planted now. Not sure of the suspension differences between the 21 and 26,  if its body roll your having a sway bar will solve it.
    • So a follow up and my fix. I found in online searches the live data to look at on a scan tool to verify the fuel tank pressure sensor was working.  It showed an spec number towards the lower end of the rang, but in spec.  Then while it was running opened the gas cap and the pressure should change.  It didn't change even a tiny bit.  The data for the purge valve said it was open...never changed. So then I measured the voltages on the plug for the fuel pressure sensor and they matched what it should be.  So local car quest parts had the sensor in stock...it was a bit of a pain to remove and an even bigger one to get it to actually go back in.  It helped to unbolt the driveshaft and bungie cord away from the gas tank to give a bit more room to work. So fuel tank pressure sensor in I cleared the code, and started it up.  I went to the scan tool's live data and... Eureka! The pressure number was different and fluctuated a bit.  So took it on a short drive and pressure number varied saw the purge valve go from closed to open and back to closed.  Drove it to and from work for roughly a week plugged in the scan tool no codes.  I took it in to get tested and passed.  In my state's infinite wisdom (oops meant greed), since I pushed the test with the maximum extensions I have to take it back in by Feb '27 to 'get it back up to date', then my next test won't be until Feb '29.
    • Any grease on the stud threads of any kind?   Wheel studs should have NOTHING on them for proper torquing and so the nuts don't back off.     Are all of the mating surfaces clean?  So wheel, rotor and hub?     We've had plenty of trucks at work with that wheel, this is a first to me.  Makes me think they've got a lube tech putting anti-seize on all the wheel studs or some kind of grease, and they need to stop doing that.  To have 11 other trucks with the same exact problem.
    • I was a Chevy guy for years, then switched to GMC because I liked the looks better.  I'm actually thinking I like the Chevy looks better than GMC for the first time in a lot of years.   One thing I know for certain, the new GMC dash is hideous!  Chevy wins this one!
