Frame Rust Build Date 12/13 ?

I brought my truck in for the seat repair and asked the dealer to look at the rust on the frame. As expected they responded that it is normal. All the other trucks on the lot seem to have similar surface rust. I picked up some rust encapsulator by Eastwood and a can of 3M undercoating, I'm considering coating all visible frame rust with the combo. The rear also has surface rust and may get a coat as well. I've looked under every truck I could find these days and all used trucks show surface rust. None I could see a few new toyotas I looked at. I don't think it's a real issue for concern, but it is annoying to see on a truck that was built only 8 months ago.

I had the same experience, until I called GM.... Then I got my entire frame re-coated, and undercoated. It looks perfect now and the new finish seem MUCH more durable than the original.

Mine built 03/14 has the newer "Shiny" clear coating sprayed over the entire frame/axle. I made sure I found a truck that didn't have any rust the second time around. This is when I found out they're spraying them now with a clear thicker stuff. I fixed my first 14 with the GM wax touch up can BC it bugged me..

The rental I had was also sprayed with the clear. When the dealer got done with my truck it was perfect but minus the clear. How do I get the clear?

Rust on rear-end. Think I'll wait til closer to warranty end date to take it to the dealer.

Oh, but a lot of people on here say its not a big deal. Brand new truck that looks like that is totally unacceptable.........

Looks like they still use the same crappy undercoating as my 06 had which there isn't anything left of. Probably saved them $10 to go with something cheaper.

I brought this up to the Service manager at Stonebriar Chevrolet in Frisco, TX since I am experiencing the same thing on my early 2013 built model. He stated that this was not included in the TSB or recall for trucks sold in Texas only for models sold up north where corrosion was more of an issue. Sounds like a line of crap to me as I did not spend 40K on a truck to see rust on it in less than a year.

He must be wrong, right? GM wouldn't put a stipulation on this repair based on where you live, would they?

 

Edit: well if you have relatives that live up north you could stay with them awhile until a northern dealership applies new undercoat. Lol.......sorry I couldn't resist

Your first pic looks like a bracket was removed from your frame and that part of it was wearing on your frame to the right of the bolt hole. That is really not good to see that kind of rust on a truck so new.

Mine has 1000 miles and same build date and looks just like yours. I have called 3 dealers so far and none has addimitef to hearing of the TSB for rust, all 3 said frame rust is normal. Gee I wish I had inspected this better before I picked it up.

Do your research on this thread and the couple of others on the same subject in this forum (read ALL the posts). The rusty frame is covered under warranty IF YOU bring it up to the dealer service dept - see info and pictures in the posts, including materials for the dealer to use and directions on how to do the job plus direction saying the repair to be done under warranty. Same thing for the rust rear diff - all covered in these posts - with pictures and dealer instructions.

I have 23 year old Chevy truck no under coating, has a little surface rust on the frame. I remember when I lived in the northeast you could get undercoating if you paid extra. I use to and still spray under coating where you can see it looking thru the wheel wells standing up for looks. When did it become standard on trucks I never paid much attention on my trucks before? You be hard pressed to have a rust thru on the frame while the truck is still worth anything, except under extreme cases, then the body would go first.

Get the TSB number on your own, and give it to them so they can't deny there is one. I hate these games that these dealerships like to play. It's ridiculous.

 

On a side note here, a coworker just bought a 2014 F-150 XLT. I was looking at it yesterday, and Ford uses a really nice hard coating on their frame. GM should take notes on that aspect at least...
