$300 a year for Onstar?

I was reading a bulletin about some insurance OBD devices, and other OBD devices as well, causing all kinds of problems. I'll see if I can find it.

On star is a ripoff!!! Should be something included in the price of the vehicle!!!! Just another thing to keep you paying...so between my SXM and OnStar it could be over $500 a year!!! RIPOFF!!!!!!

It seems to me (maybe I'm misunderstanding), that some in this thread think on-star is why you have hands free calling? Yes on-star offers hands free calling in case you don't have your cell phone, but if you do have your cell phone, then you have hands free calling via your bluetooth. When I did my original setup, on-star tried to get me to buy minutes (as well as about 5 emails since), but I find it completely unneeded as I always have my cell phone. If I do forget my cell phone at some point I'll either be with someone who has one or I'll turn around to get mine.Unless I'm on short enough trip where I wont worry about turning around to get my cell phone, and will soon be at some place that has....phones. I can not think of a time where I would ever need to use on-stars phone service.

OnStar has staff, offices for those people, computer resources, payments to cell companies for air time, software developers for updates, and etc, and etc. To make it "free" would just move the cost to the vehicle purchase price (as all those required resources are not free).

If it doesn't provide value to you, then don't purchase it. That doesn't make it a rip off. Just something that you rather not spend money on.

And this is why our trucks are now the price of half a house. because everybody wants the kitchen sink in them, but then complains about cost. On star is probably already built into the vehicle cost, the system installed into your truck wasnt put in there for free I doubt. If it were free it would probably add a significant price tag to the truck. Like you I say keep it the way it is. My only complaint is it should be on par with ford sync which comes free for a bit longer.

I'm having mine turned off when the free time is up I have not used it at all

Exactly my point, it should come with it for the prices were paying. Our new Buick enclave was just under $60k!!!!!! And I still gotta pay for a stupid subscription to something that's built right into the car..??

onstar wouldnt offer me a full year because i have a 2014 and the hardware is going to have to be changed in early 2015 because of the network changes.

they want me to go month to month, i called today to tell them to cut the service at the end of my free trial which is end of DEC, they offered me the directions and connections package for $24/month plus taxes....still no interest.

really i have a cell phone with bluetooth, and i have google maps and a data package. the only things ive used onstar for since i got the truck was getting directions to places that i know hot to get to just to play with it.

They told me the on star phone has better reception and should be used if you don't have a cell signal.

i cant even figure out how to use my onstar phone...and i have 100 free min on it..

It has a roof mounted antenna and likely a much more powerful transceiver than a cell phone. But that said, AT&T has a much less complete network than Verizon, at least when comparing it via a normal phone.

EaZ8,

You can find some great tips on using the Hands-Free Calling feature of your OnStar, here : http://bit.ly/17y0EaE. Please let me know if you need any additional assistance!

that link sends me to the mobile app, that works just fine (for now, while the hardware in my truck is still supported, curious whats going to happen when its not supported anymore in the next couple months but we were guaranteed 5 years of this app working with no onstar contract)

i thought the truck had a phone in it that i didnt need to use my cell phone to access?

Go back to your dealer and ask them to demo it for you on your truck. They may have not had it activated.

    • Got the truck back today.  Called them yesterday to get an update, and miraculously my truck is finished?!?! The $13k out the door was complete bullshit!  Ended up being over $14k.  They added some bullshit service bulletin that I cant even find, where they replaced my radiator without telling me or asking me, and charging me for it.  Need to do more research into it, cause they leaked the first delivered radiator was ran over by FedEX.  Sounds like bullshit to me. 2.5 Months for an engine swap, which ended up being remanufactured, not new; ****ing ridiculous.  Brakes are squishy as hell, not sure if its from sitting.  Will give a couple days to see it that figures it self out.  GAVE IT BACK TO ME WITH 1 GALLON OF GAS!  Just filled the tank the day before drop off, more bullshit.  My dash cam SD card was formatted, not really much I can do about that. 3 year, 100k GM warranty at least.  Time to sell it and say **** off to GM.  Bad experience.  Cant wait for the survey email to come through.  Overpriced Raptor R, here I come!
    • If I forget the phone in the truck, and forget the truck in the phone, and reconnect.  It works great for the day.  Truck sits overnight, and the next day is a no go.  It will connect Android Auto via usb cable, but not bluetooth.   Ive tried Everything in this thread so far, and nothing works for more than a day.   I think I might have to go to the dealer and have them flash the pcm.   thanks for all the suggestions guys. 👍
    • 2022 2500HD Crew Z71 Duramax single alternator.  Recently had the primary (water pump / fan) belt tensioner pulley bearing to fail while hundreds of miles from home of course the plastic pulley melted and belt shredded which took out some wiring. Found a replacement tensioner assembly and belt to continue now would like to find a replacement for just the pulley and bearing to have a spare assembly in case of a repeat, the rest of the tensioner is fine. Has anybody here found a correct replacement part for just the pulley and bearing? Any help is appreciated.
    • +1 for the 3.0   Perfect for 1500 pickup towing duties.   Perfect engine for a 1500 pickup period. Huge torque at stunningly low RPM makes it feel a lot lighter than it is. The fuel mileage is insane for a tall and heavy 1500... 30+ on the highway. Mid 20's around town.   It's probably not perfect if you bought a 6.2 for the braaaaaaapppppp V8 noises and wrapping it out to 6k. The LZ0 acts and sounds like a small turbo diesel and there's nothing you can do to make a small turbo diesel sound like a big one, and you can't make an inline diesel sound like a V8 diesel/big Duramax. It's a different driving experience altogether.   Drive one, I think you'll like it, though...
    • I'll bet your truck lost the bearings on a roller on 1 of the lifters, and now is wiping out a cam lobe.
