Paint chip on door after car wash

The re-paint may not stick as good (long term wise) as the original paint, maybe just touch it up (have a shop do it - they can be VERY good at it)

 

Thanks ill have to find a good shop around me. Here is the chip (plus a dead bug near the right side of the pic, lol). It's right to the metal.

I have a matching one of those on mine as well. I'm hoping after it gets all painted next week, it will hold up a little better.

So the body shop will be repainting my entire truck, front to back, except the hood roof and tailgate. It's about $5,000 in work they said. No small task. The whole truck will get taken apart...door seals, window seals, wheel well arches, mud flaps, decals and emblems, mirrors, front and rear bumpers. Etc. It will be interesting to see...I will take progress photos and post them here.

Make sure the body shop guys and painter at your dealer are reputable and professional. Had I know the reputation of the body shop at the dealer I went to I would’ve stayed far away.

Finally got through and the right side of my truck is being repainted. There's no chipping/flaking on the left side, so they won't do anything on that side. i'm hoping the left side is better quality and will hold up. Truck goes in April 20. I will be getting clear chip guard tape on the lower part of the doors and bed, from the body line down. I'm probably going to continue running my offset wheels with no flares or nerf bars. I like the way it looks without that stuff although i know its harder on my paint. Happy i finally got through and this is getting done under warranty. If not for seeing the TSB posted on here it wouldn't be getting fixed. Thanks guys.

Truck went in today. Changed what we were doing though. Instead of having both sides completely painted, I asked if they could instead rock guard from the first body line up from the bottom of the door all the way around, including front and rear bumpers. They said they can get it to look like the factory rock guard that's on the bottom. They are going to clear about an inch or so above where the rock guard stops and then wet sand and buff it so it all flows together. Curious to see how it turns out. I could have just had them paint the whole side, but this saves them from tearing the truck apart and helps me in the long run, since my truck is lifted. I will always have rock chip issues, hopefully this will hold up better than factory paint.

 

Rock guard will be color matched.

It doesn't seem to be color specific issue

Just got my truck back from being repainted under factory warranty. I have read some post here that says watch who you take it to but I had my done at GMC Dealership with no problems and they also gave me a lifetime warranty on the paint. Who ever you take it too make sure they give you a lifetime warranty or I would suggest taking it to another GMC/Chevy dealership with a good body shop that does give warranty, they aren't hard to find. It doesn't matter what GMC/Chevy dealership you take it to because it is covered under new truck warranty since it is a defect on 2014 trucks, they have to fix it. I had all 4 doors and both rear quarter panels repainted. Good luck on who ever has to deal with this.

I was told by my dealer, that this was a one time fix and it was body shops problem if any things happens from here on out...

The GMC dealership's body shop is the one that gave the lifetime warranty after they painted it. As for a one time fix I believe I would go somewhere else since it is a defect on GMC paint and dealerships don't get paid as much for warranty work is why some are not liking to do this. Be persistent, you have the right to get what you want done. Good luck!

I was just thinking about this and now i'm pretty sure that I was told about it being a one time fix before I showed them the TSB. I still have not signed a work order or anything and the truck is being done as we speak. So when it's all done, I will take it back up to the dealer and see what happens. My dealer doesn't have a body shop, they have the local body shop do all their work.

I would not walk away with anything less than a G.M. invoice that say's it was a warranty repair and it should be a lifetime warranty, that's what I got.
