But the overheating issue would suggest they didn't get the cooling system right, i.e. not enough radiator and fan draw. That has nothing to do with the motor itself. International had the same problem when they offered the Maxxforce 13 and then really cranked up the EGR in 2010 (EGR is water cooled on diesel motors before going to intake). Too much demand on the cooling system. It is one thing to attack the motor, but from you comments about overheating, the motor is not the problem.

and its the EXACT same Problem that Ford Ran into with the 6.0 Powerstroke; you have 1200°F Exhaust Gases being cooled by 210°F Coolant; if you have even a MINOR Leak; the VERY FIRST place the coolant would Boil off from would be the EGR Cooler; once enough Coolant is lost, then you can kiss the Head Gaskets Goodbye as the 1200°F Exhaust Gases LITERALLY COOK the Engine on the inside!

If the same cooling system is sufficient for the 5.0 and 6.2 L V8s but not sufficient for the 3.5L EB, it's hard to argue it has nothing to do with the motor itself. It's what's making all the heat.

Like I said, the problem is not insurmountable, it's just another Engineering challenge that choice of engine is posing, which usually means compromises must be made elsewhere. If it needs a cooling system sized for a 1-ton to do the work of a 1/2 ton, that's a strike against that engine type for that use.

Well, something is goofy for sure. The 2.8L diesel in my Jeep Liberty had both water cooled EGR and Turbo. It never had a coolant problem. But then, Ford is running two turbos on these things, which is somewhat goofy in itself. At least from my understanding which could be wrong. No real need to do that. Either way, I have always contended that gasoline V motors are best supercharged and inlines are best turbo charged. The design is much simpler and more reliable if they would supercharge those V6 motors. Toyota does with some pretty good results from what I have read over in the Toyota Tacoma forums. But like all new things, it takes a while to work the bugs out. GM has had its fair share of crappers.

you also have to remember that Ford Rushed the 6.0L Powerstroke to market without fixing any of the design flaws.

This truck with the 3.5 just won truck trends truck of the year contest, and they ended up averaging 15mpg... And a best of 21mpg which I assume was all highway.

I really like this truck but that fuel mileage is pretty disappointing after all they've done.

Just read in Autoweek that the new F150 has a plastic oil pan. I'm sure it's been tested, but I'm still not totally convinced.

Shouldn't be that big of a deal. I have a composite oil pan on my semi truck engine.

That fuel mileage is pretty lame. I average 14 with my 6.0L equipped 2500HD. Road trips get into 17 territory. And that has only been winter with winter blend fuel. Should be able to get a little better average now that we are in warm weather. But for that 1/2 ton from Ford to only do that, it really is pathetic.

I agree about the MPG. Steel + V8 on the GMC gives what Ford uses turbo V6 + aluminum to get. I don't have to deal with turbos and a first run of aluminum. Keep it simple stupid, especially on my truck. The biggest issue for me is the pricing of the new F150. Comparable model in my area is around 4-5k more than a similarly equipped GMC Sierra.

It appears that maybe Ford is trying to attract an entirely new group of fans (loyalists). With them pushing these tiny twin turbo engines, I have seen quite a few youngsters driving new F150's the past few months.

You know the guys who buy the tiny cars that throw turbos on them and lower them like in the fast and the furious? The guys who love that turbo whistle sound.

I had the pleasure of speaking to one of these young lads while inside a gas station on my way to work. Briefly talked about trucks and why he liked the Ford, it was his first truck ever. He said my choice was simple because he used to be into "import cars" and loved turbo charged engines. He said "my truck is the fastest truck ever made because it has two turbos stock".

Not surprising but he did not know what the engine size was or anything about his truck really, he just knew it had two turbos and that's why he bought it. He also made me aware that all other makes without turbos are junk because they can't tow anything and are too slow.....

Seems like Ford may have an entirely new following and many new customers the way this kid was talking. He did mention that all of the guys he goes cruising with were all looking into trading their cars on F150 EcoBoost trucks. If that's the case and the younger crowd wants tgem because of turbos, Ford sales will be off the charts. This tiny engine turbo idea may be genius!

That kid sounds like a moron. I'd give new F150 owners the benefit of the doubt. I wouldn't be surprised if he was driving his dad's truck and didn't know anything except it had turbos. Back in high school I used to be into import cars. Owned a Subaru and had a good time in the snow. My trucks, however, have always been V8's

The same kind of guys who rev their engines at stop lights that want to race trucks on the street? Ya seen them before, haven't ran into any while driving my sierra though.

Is it too much to ask for huge bumper holes to be designed more elegantly? The overall trucck design is great imo but that hole could have a mesh insert or even be smaller.

Just like the previous generation, they retained those covers in the bumper. Unlike the previous generation, the license plate is mounted in the center, which will block a lot of air flow from getting in.

A very nice solution.

I had to take a double look at that truck. Looks eerily similar to the Tundra.....

Iam the kind of person to say "that's a good looking truck, vehicle etc " no matter what brand but man that front of the Ford is just stone cold ugly. I just cant get passed those half bars or what ever there called in the middle of the headlights and the Tundra grill.
