Flowmaster Cat-Back Exhaust-American Thunder Series-(40 Series Muffler

Hi all,

I just purchased a Flowmaster cat-back exhaust for my truck and I haven't installed it yet because I'm a little afraid of what the effects might be. Initially I was psyched to order the system because I was getting it at a pretty good price, and read some good reviews about it. Unfortunately, I'm a little scared about a few things: 1-"drone" (still not exactly sure what this is), 2-Outside noise (will it be overly loud and bother my neighbors?), and 3-Cabin noise. One of the selling points of the new Silverado is it's excellent ride quality. Some say it rides like a luxury sedan due to the amazingly quiet cabin. It doesn't ride like your typical truck. It's silky smooth and nice!

I wonder if the addition of the exhaust will be bothersome to me in the cabin? For example: Will it be too noisy for me? Can I still make bluetooth calls comfortably? Will I be bothered by the "rumble"?

Does anybody have any thoughts about this? Anyone ever had the flowmaster american thunder series?

Well I don't care for exhaust kits since a good shop that does exhaust can build your own system for cheaper (including labor). I myself just had everything from the muffler on back taken off. I had a Flowmaster Super 44 single in/dual out put on and have the exits come out at 45° behind each rear tire. I didn't mess with any of the 3 cats in front of the muffler and it sounds awesome. Nice throaty sound without having a glasspack kind of sound, even at full throttle. As for the V4 drone, there is a drone but it doesn't bother me. As far as the noise inside the cab, you can definitely hear it, but being a "quiet cab" it's not as loud in the cab as I thought. It's a good balance actually, you can nicely hear it but you also have no problem listening to music (volume doesn't have to be loud) or talking on the phone. It's a great loud exhaust without being as annoying as straight pipes or glasspacks.

I did have a true dual Super 40 system on my old 98 and it wasn't as loud as I liked, but I can't tell you how loud just 1 Super 40 is.

Honestly, you should have looked around on YouTube before buying anything.

A friend of mine bought a Hemi Jeep Grand Cherokee a few years back... it was fun at first, but the noise got annoying... If you were in the back seat, you couldn't partake in group conversation... an in the front the endless noise got tiring on longer rides.

I have this catback on my truck and i love it, there is zero droning and you won't hear it on the highway but when you get on it the truck sounds like a truck should. The exhaust isnt loud enough to wake your neighbours unlike the super 10 muffler i had on it before.

I dont think the exhaust will be nearly as loud as you think it will be but if you don't like it you could always switch mufflers or go back to the stock system

Thanks guys (All of you!) for your input. I just keep learning and learning! Gotta make sure I send out some posts before going out and buying anything in the future. Pretty sure I'm gonna go ahead and install the 40 now.

I run a flowmaster 40 muffler on my truck and I love it. It makes the truck sound like a truck. As far as drone, you wont notice it. I just got home today hauling a U-Haul trailer from Indiana to north Carolina and back and the sound does not get annoying whatsoever.

If you plan on towing a lot make sure you get the side exit exhaust vs the back, my dads 2011 ram 1500 has his exhaust coming out the bumper and whenever he tows its crazy loud with the same muffler i have on my truck but when i tow the same trailer its not near as noticeable

Gotcha. Yeah, I probably won't be towing too much, but it's good to know how the sound might be effected by that. Thanks! I'm all about trying to decide (look wise) which direction to go in...side outs or rear? That is the question! lol

Haven't put em' on yet. My neighbor who is going to help me install it is on vacation. When he gets back, we'll install it and I'll let you know!

@MFleury-The LTZ is yours? And what cat-back exhaust do you have? Are those Flowmasters? I have the American Thunder...which are those?

Posted

Yeah the LTZ is mine, I have the same catback you do, the Flowmaster American Thunder with the side exit config

Thanks agian you guys! All the info is great! So yeah, I went and bought a Volant CAI and I wanted to know if it'll make the truck louder once installed? And will a combo of the intake + cat back Flowmasters be louder than just cat-back alone? Man I can't believe I'm so on the fence here. I went and bought the intake, exhaust, and Diablo Tuner and am super hesitant to pull the trigger on installing anything! I seriously love the way my truck rides and am afraid of effecting the quality of it. Man, I'm such a wuss! lol

    • The truck is a 1995 Chevrolet S10 Blazer, 4.3 VIN "W" engine. :cracks knuckles:   On a whim - because I needed a headache - this truck was for sale so I stopped to take a look. Doesn't run. Well, it does, but barely. Long crank, choppy idle, bad misfire(s), it REEKS of fuel. I can DO this..I'm thinking. Diamond in the rough. One owner until last year. A young guy is selling it, he bought it 6 months ago. It stranded him more than once, he's got a newborn. It was in the shop 10 days ago and he "thinks" they said it needs a new fuel injection system. He can't put any more money into it, needs it gone. I was thinking of upgrading my Macbook, which is a total want, not a need. For less than the price of a new laptop I can have fun for months tinkering on this truck and enjoying it. I'm taking this truck home. The guy was beyond thrilled, his wife was there, she thanked me profusely, I could tell they were hurting. They seemed like good people in a bind.   Some parts, a wash, maybe a set of tires, and I can have a few months of fun and then turn it for beer money (or the next project).   Sure enough, there's a work order from a shop last week in the INCHES of paperwork on this truck dating back to when the first owner bought it. They put a new distributor in it, fuel injection work describes basically opening the plenum and putting it back together. He said he couldn't afford any more work so he had them button it up and that's when he put it up for sale.   I'm not well versed in 4.3. I did discover 1995 uses the 1992-1995 SCPI "Spider" injector which is riddled with issues from splitting lines, clogged or cracked poppet valves and plastic spider legs that crumble over time. Cool. I'll just order me a ne---. Oh, the auto parts store doesn't have it? Rock Auto doesn't have it. eBay? $$$$$$ for used. These are UNAVAILABLE period end of story unless you know "a guy" who's still got one in a box somewhere.   Can't upgrade to the '96-'04 injector, it's a different plenum, wiring/pinout and sensor config.   There are a few kinda "know a guy" -guy rebuild services for these injectors out there for about $350. Okay, Okay... I'd like to know if anyone has used them? Anyone got a lead on these crappy 92-95 spiders?   I also don't want to send MY spider to Narnia and back without knowing if that's truly the problem. I guess I'll need to pull apart the plenum and do some digging.   I was also thrown for a loop. This 1995 model year truck has an OBD-II connector. The interface is decidedly not OBD-II. I can read and reset trouble codes and view live data, but there's not a lot of data. Like misfire count and on what cylinder, that's not there. It's OBD-1.5.   Nothing is ever easy. Now it makes sense why this guy wanted to disappear this thing for cheap. I'm guessing the shop told him the injector is toast, the part is unobtainable and they're not going to sort sending the thing to a rando offering rebuild service on craigslist, and the kid likely can't be without a working car for 3 weeks even if they'd facilitate that.   Experience with these early SCPI's? Stories? Things to check? Sympathy? (..Nah...)   This can sit until I sort it. But I haven't had a problem with a vehicle I couldn't easily solve in a long time.
