Load range E tires on a half ton / vibration issues

Hi Guys,

I spent the day at my GM dealer today trying to resolve the 45-55mph vibration issue on my 2014 Chevy Silverado z71. They determined that 3 of the 4 goodyear sra tires are out of round and are willing to give me some credit towards a new set of tires to resolve the issue. Im looking at the Michelin LTX at2 in the LT275/65R18 size. I want to upgrade to an LT tire but I just dont want the E load range to kill the ride. From what ive read so far it should be ok as long as the air pressure is adjusted correctly. Has anyone else run load range E tires on their half ton? thanks for your help guys

Load range E tires will lower your gas mileage as they are going to be at least 10+ lbs heavier per wheel. It will also ride rougher regardless of the tire pressure as the sidewalls are much stiffer than the passenger tires. If you aren't towing and hauling a good amount of weight regularly I would stick with a LT load range C or even a P rated tire if you rarely tow and don't off road often, E tires are just overkill in many instances.

I agree. If you don't need an LT and are concerned about ride/fuel economy then I would stick with the a P. According the Michelin website the LT version is 11.6 lbs heavier then the P version: http://www.michelinman.com/tire-selector/size/275/65/18/OE/BNW/ltx-a-t2/tire-details#techspecs

Just get the Michelins. They are great tires and ride amazing. You won't have to worry about flats as much and they're a very easy rolling tire as far as economy is concerned. Anyone who thinks you'll lose mileage with Michelins in a stock size hasn't had a set...

 

I have run aggressive all terrains on my pickup for 20k miles and the mileage is unchanged from the junk SRAs

Some confusing info in this thread. LT doesn't automatically equal load range E. You can get "LT" or "light truck" tires that are not load range E. BF Goodrich all terrains are LT tires that come in both load ranges C and E. Either one is a step up from a "P" or passenger rated tires which are softer and have thinner side walls. The Michelin all terrains come in both C and E I believe too and are "LT" tires. Check tire rack for your rim size to find an LT tire that isn't a load range E you should find something.

The new BFG A/T KO2 is an LT tire but only load range D. I've been thinking about getting a set...

I'm running Cooper S/T Maxx LT265/70R17 E's at 45 PSI and the ride is pretty rough vs the stock P-metric tires. They ride reasonably good for E's at 40 PSI but then you run into odd heal-toe wear on the tread.

 

I'd stay away from the 10-ply/E-range stuff unless you need it.

I run mine so the whole tire width makes contact, about 37 front and 31 rear. I guess the Maxx are a bit heavier duty tire with a tougher sidewall, so they're bound to ride different. The Michelins on the other hand are one of the smoothest tires I've rode on.

I had LTX on my 01 Silverado, incredible tire but I don't remember what the load range was. I've been running Toyo A/T LT load range E for over 100k miles on two trucks and they are fabulous tires, but yes a little firmer ride than P-metric, though certainly not objectionable. I think you'll be happy with the LTX, I will probably go back to them on my next set. I've been running the Toyos for their off-road capability, but since I'm not doing that much anymore I may as well go back to a lower cost, longer life road tire. I get about 55K miles from the Toyos; I recall going 80K miles with the LTX on my Silverado.

Nitto Crosstek's come in LT and P. It's a great tire, with a very easy rolling tread to save gas mileage, but the inner part is very aggressive off road. I never got stuck with mine and I'm in mud and dirt a lot. My new Ford has SRA tires and they actually ride really nice on it. I wouldn't count on a tire swap fixing your vib issue. With the 14's there's a lot more influencing the poor ride than just tires. When I had my 14 Silverado I wanted so badly to blame the tires and almost swapped but then I figured I'd make GM do it instead...after swapping everthing they did and there was no difference. Anyway, cant say enouhg about those Crossteks by Nitto. As soon as my GYs are done I'm going that route.

Load range in identical sizes is one thing, load range between sizes is useless. I had a set of 33x12.5 LR D Dunlops that had a higher weight carrying capacity than a LR E in the factory 265.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
