A spring by nature becomes harder to compress the more you compress it because of the potential energy that is being built up.  Therefore if it starts out in a more compressed state, it's reaction force is greater and compressing it further also becomes more difficult.  The spring is more compressed because the bottom perch moves higher up the shock body, but the top mount does not change.  Therefore the spring is compressed which contributes to the lifting of the truck by pushing down on the shock body. The higher you raise the lower perch, the more energy the spring has.  In addition to lifting the truck, it will make the ride a little stiffer.  But Bilstien accounts for this somewhat in how they valve the shocks for each make/model truck.

Everything you just said is true when the weight of the vehicle is off the strut. The problem is that you're not compressing it further... 

 

Once you add the vehicle weight, it becomes the new thing restricting the spring. It's simple physics. Hooke's law states Force (vehicle weight) = k(spring constant) * x (spring displacement). Since the spring didn't change, and the weight didn't change... The displacement could not have changed.

Let's assume that the relaxed length of the spring is 13", and when on a stock truck, it compresses to 11" in the strut assembly down to 7" with vehicle weight. 

 

With bilstein 5100, the strut assembly may only be at 9.15" (11-1.85 raised from the bottom), but the vehicle weight will still only further compress the spring to the exact same 7" with weight. Hence, modified ride height, exact same spring rate. 

 

Please note these numbers are arbitrarily chosen.

Why is it that my truck rides nothing like all here who say it rides smooth?could it be that they have more weight? Crew vs double? Mine are set at the top setting for max lift and rides like a brick. Sure its more stable until you get into the turns. Really wish I spent the extra coin and got kings instead of following this thread man. If money wasnt being put towards an investment I'd give these away for free.

What is your tire pressure PSI ?

Anything over about 35 regardless of lift or level and the truck will ride like a brick.

I'm not suggesting it should ride like butter, I'm only saying that it isn't the preload.

 

Full coilovers will have similar effects I suspect, but the springs and shocks on those are so much better that you'll more than make up the difference from it.

Kept it at 32 then 35 and now 40. Ko2s 17in tried my neighbors 18s p rated still like a brick.

Any added spacers or just the max 5100 groove?

40 is way too much air. Better MPGS yes, but ride.... No.

No spacers just maxed out. The ride didnt change much from the other 3 psi settings. Sucks man. They are better then stock sure but I had bils before on other vehicles and nothing like this

The weight of the vehicle when added to the new setup further compresses a spring that is already further compressed than it's OEM setting.  Further compressing an already compressed spring is more difficult to do which means it won't compress as much by the vehicle weight as it would if it were at it's stock setting.  Therefore the reactionary force from the spring is greater under this pre-loaded (or pre-compressed) state which is what helps provide the lift to the front end.

    • I'm tangentially aware of what Harley used to be, back in my riding days, although I was into Italian sport bikes. Ducati seems to have gone the other way; still very expensive, but they've made a large subset of their bikes a lot more reliable and accessible, and they've diversified their lineup to include other riding sports too. IMO, a good example of where greed and growth might have also been beneficial to the consumer.   Although GM is charging a relative premium for its most popular pickups, I find that there are some excellent value propositions in its lineup as well.   The Colorado still strikes me as the most attractive midsize on the market, and also the most reasonably priced given capability and features. There's a part of me that wishes I would have bought one instead of my Silverado.   The Equinox ...I must be getting old. The ICE equinox is a great design IMO. Probably because it reminds me visually of an actual SUV aka an S Blazer. Underneath it's nothing even remotely close, but it LOOKS good. It's got all the modern features plus some at a very reasonable price. If I had to run out and buy myself a daily commuter to do everything except tow, an Equinox would be on my list.   It does bug me that mid-tier 1500's reach into the 50-60k range, and Tahoes and Burbs are even more expensive. Less than 10 years ago, dealers were sitting on rows of Tahoe LS and LT's for low 40's. You could even still find Tahoes with a front bench, still!
    • Big oil is raking in billions from the Iran war. Can it avoid Trump’s fury?   Remember I said Big Oil is 'Vertically Integrated"?   Even as they no longer own the majority of the "Pump" they still own the "Well". Crude price upward pressure does not translate into that same pressure on production. Pumping cost remain unaffected and the gap is pure profit. Even after subtraction of a minor, comparatively, lower amount from supposed, but not always, realized refining volume. Consumers hate war, Big Oil, not so much.
    • We live in a world where the average person expects more. People say wages and our needs are farther apart. My first new home had 3 bedrooms and one bedroom. My first car and truck had what would be considered a stripped or work vehicle. In my neighborhood back then there were more homes like that and cars too. Middle managers and second home buyers worked their way up to the fancy houses and cars. Car loans were 3 years. GM had different models of cars for different income levels. The cars were pretty much the same size if you wanted a big vehicle. The nameplate designated the opulence. Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac.  To be fair some of the cost is government mandated. We can’t blame them for giving us what people will pay for. Careful advertising steering people towards more profitable SUVs and trucks. As I learned recently a minivan is a cheaper more efficient form of transportation. Certainly easier to live with. Somebody realized the profit margin wasn’t as big and gave it a soccer mom label. So it lost its coolness. They’re making it the masses are buying it. You hit your hand with a hammer you can’t blame the hammer.
    • Hi All, I’m In need of advice regarding a scan result on my 2023 Silverado HD.  The Sensor Supply voltage relay states ON But…. the following 3 tests show Malfunction. Sensor supply voltage relay control circuit HIGH voltage Test status- Malfunction Sensor supply voltage relay control circuit LOW voltage Test status- Malfunction Sensor supply voltage relay control circuit OPEN test status - Malfunction. No DTC codes are stored. No DIC Lights. Remote Key Fob has been giving a few issues, namely Vehicle will not respond to an Open/Lock command from the key fob. New batteries installed to FOB made no difference, plus on one occasion recently the vehicle unlocked using the Fob, the vehicle started normally via the push button, then a random warning came up on the DIC stating the Remote Key was not found, all this while the key was located next to the central cup holders. Does anyone have any input or advice regarding this scenario? TIA
