Won't let me upload the other pics because the file size is too large.  I'll try to compress them later.

Hallelujah, it worked!  I am thrilled.  I was so tired of fighting with that camera to get it to work.  The harness was not cheap, but I am so glad it functions properly now.

Posted

To summarize, I ran the harness through the rubber grommet under the driver's side floorboard.  I ended up not using any T-taps (for some reason MVI did not include them even though I was under the impression they would.  That's okay though as I am not a huge fan of the scotch lock-type connectors).  I hard-wired the power connections to both pin 5 on the BCM green plug and pin 26 on the BCM brown plug.  For the ground connection, I left the terminal connector installed but did not drill a new hole (I'm anti hole drilling as much as possible with my vehicles).  There was a large 13 mm bolt with a washer attaching a major piece of the dashboard's underlying metal frame.  This bolt was located up and to the left of the parking brake pedal on the driver's side lower pillar.  I basically stuck the ground terminal under that large bolt/washer combo and re-tightened the bolt.  Worked like a charm, was near the BCM so that I didn't have to modify the MVI harness, and didn't require any drilling!  From there, I used a piece of stout copper wire to route the RCA video cable through the bottom front of the dashboard and keep it out of sight.  The HMI connection was pretty simple since that piece was a truly plug-n-play T harness that provided an RCA connector for the video feed.  I then ran the harness all the way back, following the large OEM wire loom and keeping the harness fairly out of sight.  I went up and over the frame at the back.  At this point, I had around 4 feet of extra harness I didn't need.  MVI makes the harnesses long enough to work with any truck configuration, so it is theoretically long enough for a crew cab long wheelbase (I think).  I had to wrap a decent amount of the cable up with a zip tie and I place it inside the frame rail out of sight and secured it with zip ties as I did with the harness the entire way back.  The harness was run above the rear secondary BCM and I routed the plug to be very near the junction block where the camera would typically plug in.

Boom.  It works like a charm.  My only "complaint" is that I feel as though the video quality is slightly degraded.  My father's 2015 crew cab came with a back-up camera and I06 stereo from the factory.  His back up camera image appears to be a little more clear.  We have identical cameras, as I used the part number from his camera to order mine originally.  I think any degradation in video signal is from unshielded cables being run alongside various other electrical cables.  In my case, I'm afraid that being near my amplifier power line (See above pic of harness near pedals.  That's where my 4 ga. amplifier power is run through the firewall) may be the cause of the problem.  However, the difference is relatively minimal and it is still very usable.  I am quite happy overall!

Side note, the picture showing the camera's image has vertical lines appearing on it.  The screen does not actually look that way.  The vertical lines appear when I took photos of it because of the LED backlighting of the truck's display.

Successful upgrade.  I now have a 100% functioning 2017 HMI with Android Auto, Apple Carplay, and OEM back-up camera.  If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!  I am sure Jorge (Nitro) is willing to assist as well.

I agree with you that the video quality does seem a bit lacking in quality lol. My gf 15 focus on the tiny screen has a better image.

Just purchased a 2015 Silverado 1500 LT without a backup camera. My dealer in Escondido can order me the camera and the handle but I haven't been able to connect with a service rep yet to ask about reprogramming the HMI module. Has anyone in San Diego done this and possibly has a dealer or know service manager that can help?

I have an update on my quest to add the backup camera. The Quality Chevy Dealer in Escondido is at least trying to see if they can reprogram the HMI module. This is what I got back from my service rep yesterday, does it sound like they are on the right track? At least they didn't just turn me down cold like I read others experienced after inquiring.

Dave,

Shop foreman will contact GM T.A.C. network tomorrow for assistance

Hopefully they can, but from what I seen is kind of hard for them.

I got an oem cam and got their harness system when I got the Apple car play and nav upgrade.

Plug and play at the camera connections.

Simply plug into HMI then run your power to the indicated terminal off driver side fuse box.

Easy easy.

I don’t see fun when you seem to be frustrated trying thing after thing man lol bite the bullet and pick the harness up. So worth the couple bucks!

All i see is the backup csmera from them.  Nkt the system to hook it up

Well it all worked out and Quality Chevy in Escondido was able to update the HMI module to work with the factory camera, I purchased from them and installed myself. Installation is ridiculously easy. In fact the hardest part of the entire project was explaining to the dealer what needed to be done. Then waiting for them to figure it out, which they did. It's not cheap, but I doubt that you can add the factory backup camera at time of purchase for less than $500, all in all it's not a bad deal. I do have one question for those of you that added the factory camera with the 4.2 screen, did it include the guide lines? Because mine does not and I was told that the guide lines are only available with the 8" screen. Other than that, I'm really pleased with the factory camera video quality and depth of field.

Basically this is what was done at Quality Chevy Escondido.

All this had to be completed PRIOR to mounting the camera. The HMI module was reprogrammed and it cost $145 for the labor.   Quality Chevy had to contact TCSC to have a special Rear Vision Camera option (RWR) added to the vehicle’s configuration index (VCI). That cost me a flat $100, Quality Chevy said that is how much GM was charging them and they just past it on to me.

Total for the tailgate handle with camera bezel  and factory camera was $185

Total for programming and labor was $250

So for $485 I have factory camera that works of the 4.2" screen. I may have been able to do better with after market parts or calling around for pricing but I needed this done before I leave on Thursday so time was a factor and all the other dealers would have been a huge hassle to get to.

That is awesome news for LT owner with the 4.2" screens. I didnt think the dealers would re-program these trucks. And compared to aftermarket I'd say a good value. I think I paid as much or more for the aftermarket rearview mirror one a few years back and had to do the entire install myself. I dont have the guide lines either on mine. How is the image quality on the 4.2" screen?

The screen quality is good, my only complaint is not having the guidelines. The veiw of the hitch ball is fantastic and it's easy to line up with the trailer. Backing up in a parking lot, it will show if someone is right behind you. But not really how close you are to other obstacles. Other than the two solid weeks towing up and down the West coast, I don't drive it much. Hopefully with time I'll get a feel for it. Still just getting used to the 1/2 ton pickup.

Sat in a 19 Silverado about a week and a half ago, it had an option on the infotainment system that allows you to use the rear camera without being in reverse. ***Keep in mind, I didn’t try this in drive, only sitting in the dealership’s lot. ***

    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
    • So, lot's of googling and reading, and a trial fit found, that indeed they hit the newer fatter caliper. I did some re-testing today, and found just 3/16" worth of washers was enough for the wheel to spin freely. I added 2 more on each, and again it spun freely. Tested lock to lock with the 4 washers, about 5/16" not quite the 3/8" Im considering, but pretty close. No issues. I've been looking at the BORA .375" spacers and using extended lugnuts to get back lost thread due to the spacer. All the ET lugs I've seen are all .33" reach inside the wheel lug holes. For those that don't like spacers or think they're unsafe, I think it depends on what type of spacers you're using and making sure you get good quality hubcentric ones, and if you're using bolt on ones, regular mainenance, checking the spacer lugs. Not wanting or needing that much spread. Looking for the minimum that will let me run these rims and tires.  it does look to stick out a little, but I really want put these on. and use the stock all-terrains in the winter.
