My worst day in IT was a few weeks ago... got an email that Thermal threshold has been exceeded in our server room, current tem 82 degrees. 8:30 at night... Nobody technically on call, co-worker had been drinking so he cant drive, nobody else answered their phones... and my wifes at work. Threw both kids in the truck after waking them up, drove the 5 miles to work. Setup my kids with drinks and snacks in the conference room and netflix and was here till 12:30AM... didnt get anyone here to pick up the kids till 11pm. I took the next day off ;-)

I feel your pain. This week we are moving accounting into a new building, then next week, IT has to move and that means moving 5 server racks, bringing down the entire network the farm depends on 24/7 down so we can move them and redeploy them a mile away. I have 6 pc's to deploy and an entire warehouse to somehow do preventative maintenance on before Friday. And we're still fighting Mimecast. This week has been hell and next week will be hell part II.

nice. how was the land surveyor test? i took both of my PE exams last year. one of them was held at a convention center at the same time Comic Con going on. talk about the largest collection of geeks/nerds under one roof...

Was that at the San Diego convention center? I Was out there last July for a conference and I think it was comic con that was going to be there a week or 2 later.

Not too terrible, there were a surprising number of GIS and Photogrammetry questions though. The Land Survey Intern test was actually harder in my opinion, more math and other calcs.

Taking both PE exams in one year must have been fun.

Jr. Network Administrator for a small bank in the north east. I've been in IT for about 10 years now and most days I enjoy going to work. IT is def not for everyone and your friends sisters uncles sons cousin's best friends sisters boyfriend does not know EVERYTHING about computers or he wouldnt be working at Mc Donalds at age 42 ( nothing against anyone who does, but dont lay claim to a title if you havent worked a day in that field ) Sigh... "OH my nephew is into computers...." Yes im sure he has an impressive collection of porn....

Yep, I need to buy the shirt that says "No I won't fix your computer". Most people couldn't handle a bad day in IT. Such as our new spam monitor called mimecast has hijacked everyone's emails and won't release them and we have 300 users breathing down our necks.

You guys need to do what my son did...

He started his own company for side jobs (outside his regular IT job).

"Sure, I'd be happy to take look at your computer, here's my business card, with my rates posted on the back side!"

He actually does quite well. You can charge whatever you want as a consultant.

I believe you have Norfolk Southern and CSX in your area. Both are good companies. If you are willing to move you can get on with any railroad. Every railroads website is how they hire people nowadays. Go to the companies you are interested in and see what's available. The Signal department is the highest paying department for field work. Most any company will allow you to transfers departments once you get hired. So really you could apply for any job and then do an internal transfer between departments.

I too am a proud and responsible member of the concealed gun permit association and a lifetime NRA member, which includes my .380 ACP Walther PPKs that fits well within the console side pocket.

Kung Fu that!
