What synthetic power steering fluid?

Besides Amsoil, what other synthetic power steering fluid works in these trucks? I'm swapping a little bit at a time (regular ps fluid) because its been turning light brown. Figured if I'm going to be doing this, might as well go full synthetic.

I also use Royal Purple in mine

Amsoil killed mine in an 02 Silverado after a flush and fill.

All my research indicated to not use Amsoil in GM truck ps systems. At least that was a couple of years back on trucks the age of mine. The major rebuilder company of ps pumps will not warranty a GM pump that has used Amsoil. A local AC/ Delco parts house said he had GM cores rejected because of using Amsoil.

I do not know how they can tell and I am not hating on Amsoil. I can't remember if it was any synthetic or just Amsoil. All I know is mine died after Amsoil & I will not use it unless vehicle manufacturer says it is approved. You would think it would work but I ended up with a super whiney pump after changing fluid.

Good luck.

Interesting that you posted this. I have been using AMSOIL power steering fluid in my 02 Silverado ever since AMSOIL came out with it and I have 160k miles on my truck with no issues. What you should have done is taken a sample of your power steering fluid and sent it off to be analyzed. If it broke down and caused your pump failure AMSOIL would have covered the repair.

I also have changed over several customers GM power steering fluids over to AMSOIL's PS fluid with no issues and they as well have over 100k miles on their PS systems.

AMSOIL stands behind their products. Where did you get the AMSOIL power steering fluid from? Was a local dealer or from their web site?

I find it very hard to believe that the AMSOIL PS fluid caused the failure. But we will never know now since the fluid can not be analyzed to see if it actually broke down and was at fault.

Other synthetic power steering fluids out there are Royal Purple and Redline that come to mind and I want to say Valvoline also makes one.

I highly doubt amsoil would cause an issue... Most likely the pump was already on it's way out. Lots of people change a fluid then assume it's what caused the problem.

If I remember right, the Amsoil book did not have a recommended fluid for the 02 Chevy trucks around those years. It showed which fluid for other vehicles but the Chevy truck was not on there. I discovered that after it was too late. My fault, not Amsoils. More internet research led me to the company that rebuilds most ps.pumps in the US & they will not/ would not warranty pumps with Amsoil at that time. They supplied AC-Delco and Napa remans at the time.

I'm not hating on Amsoil or making this up, unless I could not read well a few years back. This was about 5 years ago and the Amsoil book did NOT have GM trucks listed like they do now. The truck has been sold and the file is gone so I can't find the info at the house. I have since trashed the old Amsoil book when I moved.

So, Amsoil dude, find an old book and see if I am right, wrong or crazy. I would really like to know now since I can't find any of my records. Maybe it was the universal fluid back then. I still have 2 bottles of the stuff if I can find them. Find me an answer please.

I hope this helps or confuses somebody. Remember, I have 2 teenagers, so I am the dumbest man walking the planet.

Good luck!

Ever since AMSOIL came out with their power steering, it was recommended for: GM/Saginaw PSF 9985010; 9985835 & 89021184. Which is what is in the 02 GM trucks.

I don't have any older look up guides for back when the fluid was brought to the market, but I do know that before it was available, I was running Redlines power steering fluid. Once AMSOIL's came out I did a complete fluid exchange over to AMSOIL's.

If you can, please see if you can find the information that stated that the manufactures of GM's pumps would not warranty if AMSOIL's fluid was used. I would really like to see it. All the searching I have done did not bring up anything like what you posted.

Again, if the fluid caused the problem AMSOIL would have covered the repair cost.

How much are you taking out each time? I have 60,600 miles on mine, don't want to wait too long.

What fluid is good for a cold climate? I heard that Gzm had issues with hoses blowing off the rack/pump in the cold?

GM actually sells a cold weather fluid...supposedly partly synthetic and the OE fill for the Corvette.

I have been pulling a reservoir full out every oil change. I broke down and decided to continue to use conventional PS fluid. Bought four quarts of Prestone from Amazon as an add-on for a good price.

The one thing that I read was to avoid fluids for leaks and "high mileage" as they have extra seal swelling conditioners that do a seal in good condition no benefit.
