Volant Power Core vs. AFE Momentum GT

As the title says I would like to hear peoples feed back that have or have had either one of these CAIs. I am getting ready to order one cant make up my mind. The 100 plus in cost differences has me leaning towards the Volant. I have installed both for customers in the past but have never owned of these brands my self. If you have one how do you like it. if you got rid of one why? Thanks. Yes I used the search function and couldn't really find enough info on the two.

waste of money. I didnt waste my money throwing one on my 5oo hp challenger. CAIs are great as go alongs with blowers, headers, tunes etc. But as a stand alone, your doing nothing but throwing money down the drain

I have the AFE with a dry filter and I'm completely satisfied with it. It sounds awesome yet isn't over the top. Basically, you'll only hear if when you're on the go fast pedal. When you cruise, there's no additional sound.

As much as people say they're a waste of money, what isn't on these trucks. One could say exhaust, a lift, rims and tires are all wastes of money. I say, if you want one - get one.

There a waste if your going for performance gains, as its just not there. Now if you may pick a little more sound if you have exhaust. its all relative.

it all depends on the vehicle. as the lone mod on the truck you will indeed probably only get a little noise under load. however, even if you just add headers or a ported intake manifold, anything that opens up the motor a little, the intake will be worth it.

It'd be interesting to see a series of dyno tests; stock engine OEM air intake vs CAI, mild cam & headers OEM vs CAI, and big cam & headers OEM vs CAI.

I think the duct (with silencer box) on the 6.2L and 5.3L is the same, although the part number is different, which I think is just the hose connector difference in diameter for the throttle bodies. I should know more soon, since I have a 6.2L duct coming. If they are the same, that means a 5.3L 355hp duct can support a 420hp engine. That says something about the air flow capacity of the duct.

I gave my input on one of the models that was asked about in the original post because I have one. No need to come on board and say "waste of money" when the post asked about a comparison.

I didn't mention anything about performance gains - we all know a CAI isn't turning these trucks into stoplight racers. To each person they're own. All I said was if someone wants an intake - buy an intake. Anything over and above standard equipment could be considered as some as wastes of money. Hell, if you put any options on your truck, it could be considered a waste of money. So again, if you want an intake, I say, go ahead and buy an intake.

Thank you sir. Anyone that thinks a CAI is going to bolt on enough power to really feel it is just silly. I have an exhaust, programmer and lift I think the CAI will be nice accent to these. your talking about getting 5 to 10 hp out of a 250 to 500 dollar part. Do that math compared to what race car drivers are spending to make huge HP gains. the cost of a CAI really isn't that bad compared. Just because you cant feel it by the seat of your pants doesn't mean small gains aren't there. AFE post a dyno sheet on their website which I think is neat because I haven't seen any other companies doing that. Everyone gets mad when the CAI doesn't produce the "up to" 34HP. Every vehicle is different AFE shows a dyno sheet with a 12HP gain (seems more believable).

I do plan to add headers once I get a few more miles on it.

You are welcome.

Like I said, I have the AFE Momentum GT with the Pro Dry S Filter and couldn't have been happier. Matched up with my Magnaflow 22" and I've got a pretty good sound when I want it.

That's the AFE I was thinking about. I want a dry filter as well. I have an AFE cat back and I honestly wouldn't mind if the CAI helped it out some. It sounds quiet in side the truck due to the new cab design but sounds good outside. Just sucks the AFE is 425 and the Volant is only 290. I think I might just bite the bullet and go with the AFE.

I had an AFE in the past on my last truck and my friend has one on his ram, both were stage 2. We went this route because they had the best dyno sheets. In the end I sold mine and he accepted that he lost power and mpg to improve sound. We both had dry filters. His truck has almost no bottom end power with it and after I sold mine and went back to stock I was blown away with how responsive my engine was.

I would recommend just getting an afe drop in dry filter, but if you really want the CAI for the sound it makes then I would probably recommend the AFE.

I had a Volant with that giant beehive looking power core filter in my 2010. It caused a CEL, messed up my AFR and would stumble on cold start like my truck was starving for fuel. Replaced it with OEM air box, AirAid air tube, and AEM dry flow filter, problem solved. For some reason my truck just did not like that Volant stuff.

I would highly recommend saving yourself a bunch of money and just going with the AirAid MIT. You will have extra money for something other than snake oil. BBP did a test on the GMT-900's a while back and showed that was the best set-up. Do a search and read their results.

I had them both.. they both suck. Just noise makers .. which may be cool for the younger guys. Not so much for the over 40 crowd. Just add a free flow filter to the factor set up...
