maxed out my payload

so I get a call from my wife today asking to come help her and her mother bring some flooring back to their gym. at first they wanted me to take her moms Honda element to get the flooring since they thought it was going to rain but I figured it would be too heavy for the element. I did not realize how much flooring they were getting until I got there. had I known it was going to weigh so much I would have taken my trailer. but it was not too bad and the truck drove as if it was a moderate load. could barely tell I had a lot of weight in the back unless I hit a bump / dip then obviously the truck did not "hit" so hard as it does when it's empty.

 

I did the math, we had about 30 boxes of vinyl flooring which weighed (according to scale no weight on box) 45lbs ea. then we had 10 boxes of tile that weight 59lbs ea. so the total weight for all the flooring was 1940lbs which is about 300 above my payload which according to my door jam sticker is 1687. again had I known it was this much flooring i would have taken my trailer. anyways here are some pics. i forgot to measure but as you can tell it squatted quite a bit.

I did 30 bags of dirt at 60lbs each and 10 bags of mulch around 20 lbs each. Was a bit squatted, but not horrible. Only had to drive 2 miles with it.

Nice, I had about that much weight in mulch in mine last summer, it did fine too. Like you said it would be better to have a trailer.

I believe manufacturers give themselves some wiggle room when it comes to towing and payloads to play it safe for warranty reasons. It should be fine to do once in a while

Wow that things sagging! Looks like the Ford F250 Super Duty trucks when you throw a couple sheets of plywood in the bed LOL!

That's a good amount of flooring & tile you have loaded in the bed. Glad you made it home safely.

 

I've done that before to my truck before, now I always take a trailer when we go somewhere like Lowes or Home Depot. Lesson learned after driving home with my headlights pointing to the sky!

Be glad you don't have 3.08 gears like I do. I have a lot of weight in my toolbox, but as I've said on here a lot, I helped haul a love seat with a recliner on both sides and I could feel it. I wouldn't have felt it in my 98 with 3.73 gears with the same stuff in a toolbox.

 

I love using my truck as a truck. So far I haven't done anything major other than that loveseat and moved a truckload of smaller stuff here and there. Both of my old trucks (86 Chevy C10 and 98 Z71) when I had them I overloaded the bed once on each. Both was actually gravel for my driveway. The 1st time I had so much weight in the 86 the steering was so light that I thought I would wreck and I made sure to get more following distance. The rear tires were probably only an inch from rubbing the inner fender. As for the 98, didn't put as much weight but enough to make the steering a little light but nothing to worry me like it did in the 86. I even had a cop behind me when I was in the 98 and I knew he would pull me over, but never did thankfully. As mentioned above, it's ok to overload once in a blue moon as long as you don't do it every month.

Well you are right, I am over the payload of my truck. I would say I traveled about 10 miles from the store to their house. Regardless of the distance I get it I am over the payload. However, while I was driving on the public road with other people around me I did not feel unsafe in my vehicle. I never felt as if the truck was struggling, I left plenty of distance between the person in front of me.

 

the worst thing about going over our payload is that fact that you can heat up your rear bearings since it's 'over' it's weight rating. I don't do this ever, this was a spur of the moment thing for me. You are entitled to your opinion and you do have a point but it was a very short drive and I felt in complete control of the vehicle.

 

Now if I was towing a 15k - 20k trailer with my truck, that would be a completely different story.

Thank you for the complements. They are 10 ply tires so they didn't bulge at all. I thought about inflating them but it was such a short trip it was not worth it.

Nope....it's a totally different story when someone has their truck bed loaded than it is with 15,000-20,000lbs pushing your truck down the highway putting others in danger.

I had about 2,000 lbs of walnut in my truck this spring...it handled it just fine-of course I also have air bags.
