Lost all electrical power. Temp shows 35.

My 14 sierra lost all electrical power while leaving a parking spot. Lost power steering first followed by complete loss of power. Came back on and told me to rolldown drivers window and back up. Temp shows 35deg but actually about 75 out. Still shows 35 a couple hours later. The loss of steering freaks me more than anything else. Ive driven many years without temperature. Cant drive without steering.

This is somethng thats beyond anyone here. When I hear lost steering thats just unacceptable, its not the first time Ive heard that about these electric PS systems going out.

I don't know about your steering problem but you can fix your temperature display by driving at least five miles without dropping below 20mph. Mine does it occasionally from sitting so much I assume. I get on the interstate and at 70mph it only takes a couple of miles to recalibrate. I know it sounds stupid but it works for me.

I also found that pulling up the IntelliLink weather app forces the temp to update itself.

Same here. Quite bizarre, but it does work.

Later that night i started up and temp showed 91. It was actually 65. As i drove, the display lowered 1 or 2 degrees every 15 seconds or so until it corrected itself. Later, my intellilink display info went away. No letters or info, but was still powered and glowing. My son fiddled with buttons and it came back on. Even later, i was driving along and saw my headlights dim to about 1/2 power for just a moment. Truck didnt die and i didnt lose steering but it is concerning. Love my truck, but starting to wonder if i'll be stranded some day.

I'm hearing you describe a few safety issues here... loss of power steering, headlights dimming...

I'd take it to the dealer, get a loaner, and otherwise not drive it until they fix it.

Just to clear up what sounds like some confusion with electric power assisted steering. Even when the system is completely cut off from any power source, you can still steer the truck. Yes, it takes more effort but you're not loosing all steering like some of you guys seem to be thinking.

Its basically the exact same as losing a hydraulic power steering pump. You still maintain all control of the vehicle, the effort needed simply increases.

I figured at highway speed I would still be able to steer like a hydraulic steering loss. At 3 MPH in the parking lot was an abrupt loss with much higher effort. All has been well for the past few days.

Hi jimbo25,

We notice the electrical difficulties you've experienced in your Sierra. Your safety is important to us and we take these comments seriously. As mentioned by another member on the forum, we recommend going to get everything checked out if the symptoms reappear. Feel free to send a private message if you'd like to discuss things further or have any questions.

Kind Regards,

An update: I had no further problems so I delayed making an appointment, until this past weekend. On 3 occasions my engine died while shifting out of park. 1 time the intellilink blanked until I touched some buttons. I now have made an appointment at my dealer, but I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue that we can trade notes about.

Here's the Honda logic, I couldn't find GM's but I'm sure it's similar:

My old GMC got stuck on 35 (or thereabout) for a very long time (weeks), and then one day started working again.

Please update us on what is found... This is about the 3rd instance I have heard of this but have yet to hear back on the fix. My bets are on a bad/poor ground wire or possible issue with one of the cells in the battery.
