Was on the receiving end of several pieces of gravel that fell out the back of a local construction company gravel truck on the highway yesterday. Caught the windshield in the passenger side top corner and stared it out. I got the driver to pull over and he was on the defensive right off of the bat, so I was on the phone with the highway patrol for a report. Then the driver decides to take off as he see me come over with my phone for pictures, when I got back in the truck the star crack had already started to run across the windshield.

 

OHP sent out a trooper, I followed the guy for several miles until he started to drive aggressively and OHP asked me to back off. Meet a trooper at my location to take the report, they caught the truck 10 miles down the road. Got his info and filed a claim with their insurance company yesterday. Along with the destroyed windshield I also got a couple of nice gouges in the front end and a couple of chips in the paint on the hood.

 

Scheduled to have the windshield replaced this morning, going to cost $900 for a new GM windshield thru Safelite auto. Now to see how the companies insurance company handles their side, not looking good since the OHP called it a hit and run since the driver left the scene before the trooper got there.

Yes, I am happy about that. I got a pic of the back of the trailer and the side of his truck with all of his DOT info. When I called the company their safety guy didn't seem to give a care about it, so I said screw it and filed with their insurance instead. My insurance said at the maximum I will be out $250 if the other guys insurance doesn't cover it and it wont affect my rates since I never file claims.

 

Sucks, I had just detailed the truck up this weekend and it was looking pristine. Now to deal with the new windshield and taking the truck in for an estimate for the paint work.

Be glad, in Indiana once it leaves their vehicle they are no longer responsible for whatever comes off their vehicle. Got to hang back to avoid anything, the front glass is a joke on these trucks, if you so much as look at that windshield wrong it will crack, several have had them crack sitting in their driveway.

Had never heard of safelite until their massive nation wide advertising campaign a few years ago.

 

But their rates are through the roof expensive. Wanting to say the last time I got a quote, it was

just shy of triple a local glass shop.

So if something falls off a truck and kills somebody because they improperly secured it they have no responsibility?

Here trucks put signs on their POS deathtraps that say stay back 200 ft, not responsible for damage but I've never heard of it working for them.

Yeah that post about them not being responsible does not make sense. In Texas you are responsible for securing your load. If your load falls off and damages property or hurts someone you are responsible for whatever it damages or whoever it hurts.

Glad you got some rarely seen justice. I think all windshields are weak these days, ours even more so due having less angle "truck." Replaced my Wife's TC windshield last year after some brat threw a rock over the fence. Replaced her new Rav4's a month ago due to a rock truck dropping crap on the hwy. The TC's was just destroyed, the Rav4 spread from a corner chip to the whole windshield within 30min.

So you are saying that people have had their trucks sitting in the drive way, with no rocks are anything dropping on the windshield, they crack? Only from heating and cooling maybe? I just don't think that is possible unless there was stress from mounting or something hit them.

I wouldn't buy a Safelite brand windshield. Had one. Piece of junk. Wavy optics, chipped and starred easily. Good the OP had them use a GM windshield.

There is a default in the glass on these trucks, I don't know if there is to much pressure or the glass is to thin but there have been a ton of windshields cracked on these trucks.

 

In Indiana if a rock falls off a dump truck they are not responsible for it. Just a example, sucks!

Had a guy at work who was out for a week. During that time, leaves fell in the back of his pick up....he ended up getting pinched by Ct. State Police and cited for having an unsecured load because the leaves were blowing out of his bed as drove down the road :rolleyes:

Spoke with the companies insurance company yesterday, while they understand the issue they are saying the trucking company is swearing they cleaned their truck and I have no way to prove the rock was from their truck. Guy was nice about it and knows the position it puts me in that litigation may result. While the insurance company can deny the claim that doesn't mean the courts will side with them.

 

So I am weighing my options as of now, it is not the money it is the principle at this point.

 

Dealership got the new glass in for me, I went with Safelite just because I knew of the name. Dealership is putting in factory glass for under $500 compared to the $940 Safelite wanted.

      What meaningful corrections were done to fix the "machining errors?"   I bet nothing, because the 6.2 is soon to be obsolete. Why would GM implement any fix let alone an "expensive one?"   Until someone can provide any convincing information that GM did ANYTHING to correct the engines - the 6.2 is no for me.    Which means keeping the 2016 Denali longer until the next generation (6.6?) proves itself.

      If my father took a Sunday off. We did the Sunday drive. Usually stopping at a Geno’s for dinner that we eat in the car. Six of us with my little sister up front. It was always a Buick growing up. In New Jersey you couldn’t get lost. Not like Texas.

      I suppose I am Atlas. It can always be worse, eh?   I had a friend once that rolled one payment into another until he was paying the price of Benz for a 10 year old back marker. Wouldn't be often you start a new payment the month following your old one.

      I still enjoy the drive   Some people fish when they retire; some golf. I drive. We've lived in the same general area now for twenty eight years and I'm still finding at least monthly some sweet quite little road to explore. When I tell the Mrs. I'm heading out for coffee she knows that could be a five hour event. Often she even goes along.    I like finding new rural routes used mainly by the locals that start nowhere in particular and end the same way. Many in the area of that type are narrow paved and twisty, hilly and run through field and timber. Often along creeks or wetlands. Unfarmable areas of great natural beauty.    After years of this type of exploration they start to fit together. One ending a mile or so from another and you start threading together a new path from a unfamiliar place to a new adventure. Sometimes to a little town of under five hundred that used to be something before the Interstate or some railroad or US highway bled the life out of it that has a small dinner with the greatest slice of pie you've eaten since grandma made her last. A little village museum or library or even a town square park with grand old oak, walnut and Osage orange trees to sit under while you sip you gas station coffee and chat up some locals.    Often they are full of stories about the main streets more interesting buildings and the who's who of the area. Sometimes some hidden attraction or unseen history. Our area is full of old coal mines.     A younger self used to do this going cross country by motorcycle. Only a general area as a destination with no time to get there and no time to be back. Sitting at days end in a 10 unit off the main highway motel under a Sycamore tree yacking with the owner or his one semipermanent guest while I adjusted valves or the chain. Always a wave and a shout "Hey there stranger"!  It's how I came by my love of old Brit iron. There is no such things as a ten minute gas stop when your on a Enfield or a vintage Triumph. Same being true of old cars.    If you take the time to really look I've found everywhere is someplace interesting. Illinois or West Virginia. Different and yet the same.    People are in a more relaxed mood and will talk about anything and everything and if they like you there may be a cupp'a or a lemonade and a sandwich in it. 😉
