Ford is going to see a decrease in their truck saled for sure. For whatever reason, they continue to jam their tiny turbo charged engines down the throats of their customers.

When they finally do phase out their V8 engines, that's when their sales number will decline drastically IMO. They even play V8 ehaust sound through the stereo speakers in an attempt to give the customer that V8 growl, pathetic.

People are drinking the kool aid. EcoBoost accounts for more than half their sales now on the F-150.

Seriously?... Ok I didn't know that...

It's because it has the word "ECO" in it...the world has gone ecology crazy... I could go on but I think I'll leave it at that..

If that's the case, people should love GM's newly named "ECO"tec3 engines. What you said about the "eco" nonsense is sadly true and GM is fully on board now after kicking the "Vortec" name from every current production engine. I just hope they don't follow Fords lead on the tiny engines boosted for maximum performance and short term reliability.

 

I will be in the market for a new pickup in a few years and if GM does what Ford is doitnow, my new truck/trucks will not be GM.

The only thing people are complaining about is 'V6'. If you look at just the horsepower/torque numbers there's no question of whether you'd want the EcoBoost or not.

The power numbers are nothing to sneeze at.

The only complaint you could possibly have is that it doesn't sound like a V8.

Those numbers are outdated and reflect gen IV GM V8s. The gen V have more power and the 6.2 spanks it. Plus I do have concerns over a boosted engine long term, especially as many people are tightwads who'll use cheap no name gas in them. I'd run premium regardless of the claims its ok on 87. You have to be leaving tons of power on the table with regular.

The number you posted are exactly what Ford wants you to do. Their V6 with the turbos are tuned for maximum power output all the time and that's not a good thing. These engines are not going to last over the long haul and there have been plenty of documented issues that Ford has been working on. The MPG numbers have been proven to be inflated, just ask the EcoBoost owners, the numbers are not even close in the real world. If a turbo engine is what you are interested in, go get an F150 but don't expect it to last very long.

 

I would much rather a V8 engine over these small boosted engines every day of the week. Turbos are just not for me, some like them and some don't. Ford is targeting a certain market pushing these turbos. The younger 'fast & furious' jap car crowd is what they are attracting, good for them.

I will never buy a V6 truck myself due to the sound. I have driven the Ecoboost that my buddy owns and it's no slouch. Impressed with the power that it has, but pushing an engine that hard with twin turbos can't last very long. We will see. Ford is kicking ass right now. Sales are up with the new platform, forcing GM to get those revisions to the platform out.

If Ford drops the V8 from their light duty truck lineup they won't see much of a hit at all. The EcoBoost sales to date as of November were up about 45% and that same money 63% of F150's sold were EcoBoost. I think the biggest hurdle for any automaker is getting older people to realize that displacement isn't king anymore. Time and time again it has been proven that smaller engines with boost can yield or better results than its bigger counter parts. Formula 1 racing is a great example of this. I am by no means an EcoBoost lover as I want my truck to have a V8 hence why I purchased another 6.2L but I do understand the idea and benefits of the small engines as well.

Except the L96 6.0L still in full production. Still a Vortec.

More parts, more issues...simple mathematics.

 

I remember how Consumer Distorts used to always give the Toyota Corolla glowing reliability reviews....which made me laugh because there was virtually nothing to those cars...I don't even think at the time that a radio was standard... Then when they started putting more options in them issues started cropping up.

 

Keep the engines simple and you will keep the reliability, which appears to be the way GM is going. Hope they keep it up.

I agree with the reliability comments as well. The 5.3L V8 is a proven engine that will go 250k+ no problem. Having to replace/rebuild turbos at 150k is not what I want to be doing with my daily driver. I've had turbo sports cars and they are a blast, but not particularly reliable. Guys buying these and trading them in after 3 years won't care though, so sales may be unaffected. You just won't see many of these on the road in 10-15 years.

But one thing that many don't take into consideration on looking at numbers, they look at the total and not where it happens. The naturally aspirated stuff might get to the EB level or even exceed it, but where in the RPM band? The EB is reaching peak torque at 2500 RPM and holding it longer up the band. With the naturally aspirated stuff, one has to get way up the RPM band to get anywhere near max torque. And for working, torque is where it's at. It is preferable to have max torque down in a lower RPM range where most of the work is being done. Why have a motor screaming at 4200 RPM to get to max torque when I can get it at 2500? Why do you think that commercial trucks are getting their peak torque at 1100-1200 RPM and holding it well thru 1500 RPM? That is where the work is being done. I have no fascination with the EB and Ford, but I do know that it is preferable to have max torque down low. While some might do it, I would not be towing a 500 gallon fuel wagon thru hilly, loose farm ground at 5000 RPM. I would be doing it at 2000-2500 RPM. It would be comical to see someone pulling a fuel wagon or anhydrous tank thru a corn field at a screaming 5000 RPM. I am sure the neighbors would be passing out real glowing comments when they talk with each other.

 

I didn't get a diesel in my 2500HD as I could not justify the cost benefit ratio. But one of the reason I chose it was for the 6.0L because that motor reaches 90% of available torque at 2000 RPM. It is not a highway towing truck, but a working truck from time to time that has to do things off the road. If I wanted to race the motor at 5000 RPM to get something done, I would have bought a sports car.

What you just described is possibly the engine that will be in the next generation GT500. Rumor is it'll be a V8 with twin turbos and pushing well over 800hp stock. Even one of the guys at Ford made a joke when asked about Hellcat power.

That sound funny my friend, When you say that the 5.2 for the future GT 500 is stock with twin turbos ,You don't really believe that crap do you ? If it was stock the flat-plane- crankshaft 5.2 would be offered in all mustangs and trucks !

    • So, do I go elbow-deep on this thing or list it for sale and play dumb? Seems to "runs good."   I'm about $1200 away from having: -a rebuilt injector ($300) -a new cat ($250) -a new cat back exhaust (OE style) ($300) -a new AC compressor ($200) -AC refrigerant charge ($150)   In theory, this should rectify the obvious detracting issues from its value and operability. Cold AC with a non-squeaking AC pulley both sounds and feels good. An exhaust that isn't cut/hacked in 17 different places and doesn't vibrate on a crossmember would make it sound and feel less janky. A working cat would help the stink, and will save the earth, but *if and only if* the fuel system is working properly, which would also address the intermittent "rich" CEL.   Heard a good one... CEL for "Rich condition" means you haven't spent enough money on the truck lately, and it's letting you know.   Rebuilding the injector would seem to be the most important part. Replacing the cat would be secondary. I don't think mine is plugged or overly restricted, but it might be a little restricted? I have no good way to tell other than seat of the pants feel. I hate the smell.   The current theory is I have a rich idle problem: A bad fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking injector(s) being the highest probabilities. I already replaced the FPR but that doesn't mean its replacement isn't also bad. It was a new part from Dorman, but the packaging looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for 20 years.   This is the (single) upstream O2 sensor shown at idle. I'm getting a lot of "rich" it seems. Sometimes it stays high like that and doesn't drop down. That makes me think it's processing injector leaks or a partially stuck open injector.     Other times it looks like this. Nice oscillations between rich and lean, which is what I think it should be. Under load and at speed, the oscillations are nice and tight and uniform looking, high and low.     Fuel trims suggest the PCM is compensating pretty hard at idle to pull fuel out. But it's not enough to trip a CEL. Something about slowing to a stop: brake vaccum booster, EGR, or the EVAP purge is delayed, or there's pooled fuel in the intake again that's draining into a cylinder is enough to set the CEL. Of course, in two days of driving, it hasn't set. I was hoping to actually look at the freeze-frame data when it sets. IAT is high because it's idling on an 83 degree day here.  
    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
