Factory Wax Coating Peeling Off Chassis/ RUST!!

Recommended Posts

I noticed some of the black factory coating has come off the chassis of my truck. I noticed a couple spots off in the rear wheel well, chassis right under the doors. I Also noticed some rust occurring on the shocks, and rust coming trough up where the trailer hitch bolts on the chassis, and on some of the other components. Is this normal? I had my truck undercoated back last December when it was brand new!

Is this happened to anyone else? Any advice on what I should do?

But anyway if I brought the truck to the dealer what would they do?

In the meantime I was thinking on buying cans of green rust check and doing the chassis over myself, so I knows how its done and its done good. But will that make the wax coating worse?

When the Wax falls off I spray bed liner back on that spot.

Eventually I suspect I will have the whole frame done in bed liner one can at a time ha ha.

I basically had this done (a shop that specialized in undercoats) up to just before the sections of the frame under the engine, which are still just the wax coating that as it peels I spray on with just a can of rubberized undercoat.

I've read the other threads, but curious - how many miles y'all have on them?

I'm at 4500, and my wax frame coating looks great. Didn't know if you already "suffered" a winter or what the deal was...maybe luck of the draw?

41k miles and similar as above, seen 2 winters, small spots where it starts to peel. As it does ill cover it back with POR 15 or some other coating.

Long story short, no it's not normal by logical standards but it is completely normal by GM standards. There is a service bulletin out for some 2014 trucks where the wax was coming off in sheets and large chunks. Beyond that though, everyone will experience the coating coming off and the frame rusting at some point through normal vehicle usage. If you think your frame looks fine, I'd encourage you to crawl under your truck and look more closely. I guarantee every Silverado on the road has rust on the frame somewhere. Even if it doesn't, the wax coating will come off the first time your truck goes up on a lift from the contact points of the lift on the frame and those spots will be the first to rust. So it's inevitable really. I wish they would do a painted frame....then I could at least spray Rustoleum on the rust spots which would neutralize the rust and coat it at the same time. With the wax you need to sand or wirebrush the rust off and spray the same wax compound back. It's so dumb.

Haha that's what I've resorted to after having the TSB work peel off too. Very sad, but I guess we gotta make the best of it.

Mine had a whopping 3200 miles when about 40% of the frame had surface rust and peeling.

Mine had rust with 7 miles on it the day I drove it off the lot.

In fact if you go out to any dealer and crawl under the trucks on the lot, I guarantee they all have rust in some place or another.

what is the intervals we should do to recoat the frame? or would it be better to strip it and coat it with some other permanent coating?

Apply your coating of choice. In the spring and fall. I apply fluid film twice a year because of where I live and the volume of salt/brine they dump on the roads here. You can get away with once per year to be honest.

There aren't many permanent solutions. Wax will flake off, dust will wick away oils during the summer. I have seen any rubberized coatings or bedliner that last. They eventually rust underneath the coating from what I've seen.

POR-15 is petmanent but you'll probably need pull the bed off the frame and strip the wax off. Done right and the stuff will last longer than the rest of the truck.

Pretty good summary, Ill be doing once a year. Honestly its cosmetic, not going to rust through in the life of the truck. So its just what you can deal with.
