Turning in my Ford

The 4.3 is rated at 7200lbs towing when you get the 3.42 and towing package. I leased mine as ive seen what other trucks look like here in the north after 4-5 years. I'm getting to the point where i don't want to work on my vehicles or pay to have it done. The truck pulls my 5800 TT just fine (I would not go thru the Rockies with it) but in the flat lands of the Midwest it has done just fine. It has just as much HP as the old 4.8 motor and real close to the early 5.3 numbers. I only tow once a month maybe twice from may to Sept. So for me I get the benefits of better mileage the rest of the year.

You make a good point about being in the north. I go out to San Francisco occasionally for work and it blows my mind how 20+ year old cars still look BRAND NEW, but at home a 5 year old vehicle looks like junk.

+1 mpg per year at 15,000 per year is less than $50 at today's gas prices, or less than 1 fill-up. That's within the margin of error when factoring.

 

That's not a factor in my opinion.

OP...drive them both and decide for yourself. I had a loaner V6 Crew Cab Silverado and it was fine for normal city and highway driving. Had the loaner up to 80 on the toll road here and, although it took longer to get to speed than my 5.3L V8, it was just fine. Would I buy one? Not sure...

I currently have a f150 that's due back soon (leased). I am looking at a Silverado double cab, with the v6. Anything I should be concerned about with this configuration? How have others found the mileage with the 6?

How are the lease incentives in your zip? I actually preferred a double cab and luckily they had $4750 worth of lease incentives on them. Only $1000 incentives on crew cabs so it was a super easy choice. I also get supplier pricing ($3300 off) and they even price matched a deal I found on the internet so I got an additional $2000 reduction for that. So just a little over $10k off bringing the truck price to $40000ish. Residual on this truck is 68% on a 24 month lease so purchase price after lease is $34272. Not a bad difference to make up in 24 months. I put a couple grand down and my payments are very low. I'm not bragging here, just mentioning that you definitely need to check incentives on all Silverado configurations for your zip code to make sure you're making the right decision. Also, I put out lease quote requests on five different identical trucks in this area and they all came back with different figures. Shop around [emoji109]

My atv that I will pull 1 or 2 times a year weighs 1000 lbs. As for hauling stuff I don't think it'd ever be more then a few hundred lbs. Hate to say it to the first responders, but I'm leaning towards the v6.

 

The truck is after incentives/rebates/supplier pricing is $34500. So 8,000 of sticker. It's a LT double cab with like one option package on it so nothing extremely fancy. Also I got him to throw in a tonnue cover lol

 

Also I'm unfortunately over my miles on my f150 so I have a chunk of money I owe when turning that in :(

As others have noted, be sure you take a nice test drive in the V6 truck. I believe there have been several complaints of the active fuel management causing some pretty noticeable vibrations when switching from V6 to V4 mode. The V6 configuration is prone to a little more vibration than V8's.

OP, you might want to test drive the new F150 and the Silverado real good before making a decision. I was a long time Ford owner, the last 5 trucks, and bought a 2015 Silverado with the 5.3. I want to love this truck, but the hesitation and poor transmission programming just kills it for me. I hate the response of my new truck, and wish I stayed with a new F150.

I took it for a 30 mile test drive, hey the salesman said I could take it all afternoon if I wanted lol. I did pay attention to the transition from v4 to v6 and it was seemless. Only thing I miss is the throaty sound of my old v8 :(

I test drove the new f150. The rear seats in the extended cab are smaller and it doesn't have 4 doors. The other reason I didn't like it is it feels a little cheaper on the inside then the Silverado.

Almost 10k miles on mine and I can't ever tell when AFM kicks in.

I'm always amazed at the contrast from truck to truck, and how the tuning can be so different from one to another.

I can't usually tell when it kicks into v4 but when it comes back to v6 it's noticeable.

google sprint booster worked for me really woke up the 5.3

    • I am sure that was quite the pass experience and not a great place to experience during the winter when the conditions are not good. I've seen video of that pass and also more detailed information and pictures about the wrecks at that one hair pin turn where tractor trailers have flown right off the cliff and I am sure from all the warning signs that you know the exact curve that was !. After all there is a reason why a song was made about Wolf Creek Pass !. By the way and I didn't realize this either when I bought my truck as its nothing I even thought of that would be programmed into the cruise control and this occurs in either the basic or the more advanced cruise that controls your distance behind a vehicle and that is the brakes going down a hill are being applied as soon as the vehicle goes a certain speed over the set cruise speed. While it certainly does force downshifts in the transmission as you found out with cruise on while going down hill, its also dragging the brakes as needed to keep the speed controlled to what the cruise was set to. For me, I find that unsettling simply because I have no concept then as to how MUCH brake input is being used a and just how hot are those brakes getting and the wear factor as well. I can see that system getting a person into trouble on long mountain grades while pulling a trailer as it would not only be standing on the brakes of the pickup without any driver input, it would also be automatically applying the trailer brakes and it could cause a run away unit by overheating the brakes. Its one thing on a shorter hill and if the driver allows it to do its thing but on a long mountain grade is where things could get so out of hand. As someone a while back on this forum said, they had someone following them at night I believe on a down grade and had the cruise set and the person behind them could see the brake lights being energized all the way down the hill. I figured when I saw your comment that you didn't know and would have no way of knowing that your truck was applying the brakes and that you would and rightfully so assume you only used the brakes when you pressed on the pedal to slow down more than the cruise set speed for the slower sharp curves. So its good knowledge to know this about the newer GM trucks, certainly when doing any descending on long mountain grades. In the future try kicking off the cruise and use the the manual mode on a pass to see what that is like as I know myself when I first experienced it I thought no way can this engine be holding me back this well and tried the same hill in manual mode and sure enough the engine was revving way up and still could not hold the trucks speed down like it could in cruise mode.    Fuel mileage, that is where a really low sleek type of car can do better at higher speeds, certainly it starts sucking fuel too but a tall pickup is pushing massive amounts of air and also allowing a lot more air under it and the tow mirrors as in elephant ears pushing through the wind  as well. Driving like grandpa is about as good as one can do when driving one of these if trying to get the best fuel economy they can. I bet these trucks would get the best mileage they can if driven on a freeway in Florida if not busy traffic at a sedate speed and that sea level elevation without hills, vastly different then Colorado !.
