checking oil on a 6.2

I have a 4/15 build truck with the 6.2 and the question is more dipstick related. I know the upper dot indicate full, and the lower dot is 1qt low. I also know that the engine was originally designed to take 8.5 quarts, but has been revised to hold 8qts. What I want to know is: are the dots on the dipstick "calibrated" for 8.5qts or 8qts?

I don't think GM redesigned anything to go from 8.5 to 8 quarts. The dipstick was showing over full with 8.5 quarts, so GM said 8 is good enough.

last time I changed my oil, I put in 8 quarts and the dipstick read full at the top dot.

Correcto.

Chang oil. Add 8 qts. Read dipstick. Question answered. :)

Simple answers are NOT acceptable on this forum! :nono:

I wonder if the back story is that it needs 8.5 qt for a 'factory' fill, but doesn't all drain out so a 'service' fill is 8 qts.
