2016 Silverado standard HID vs LED headlights

Can we switch our HID headlights to the LED headlights that are available on the upper trim levels?

 

And if possible, would there be any major difference in light output vs the stock HID vs LED?

Yes, you can as long as you choice the same LED bulbs as your stock HID's.

However, do not worth to change to aftermarket LEDs because factory stock HID are better than LED from aftermarket at this moment.

If your stock bulb is halogen, you could consider change to LEDs.

I'm not totally convinced LEDs are superior. I have them in my Jeep cause they're the best solution for that but LEDs don't get hot enough during winter to keep certain types of snow from plugging up the headlamp. We had a late winter storm this year with temps above freezing and it got to the point were the headlamps were nearly useless.

I was just talking about this very same concern with LED headlights. I am hoping they keep the ice clear during winter

Not sure? I have the full LED's in Sierra and the light is white and output is very good. Although I have noticed that they do have a cut off/ or line really that is light/dark. Almost like a knife of light cutting through the night. It is noticeable on slight grades/hills etc. more than anything.

 

I never had HID lights so can't say anything about those...........

HID easily has more output than LED...plenty of articles about this. You have a 2014 silverado though?

The 2016 Silverado doesn't offer an OEM LED diode, just GMC does.

 

Yes, you can as long as you choice the same LED bulbs as your stock HID's.

However, do not worth to change to aftermarket LEDs because factory stock HID are better than LED from aftermarket at this moment.

Light output right now is good.

Why not just buy HID bulb replacements and get the correct color temperature? You'd still get the light output of a HID and you'd get the color of a LED...

 

But this is only if you can't live with your factory bulbs being slightly bluish... I believe they're 6000k or 6500k and changing them to 5000k or 5500k would come be a pure white light like LED. Many topics on this in the HID/LED pinned topic.

The color isn't an issue for me, I was aiming more towards the benefits of the LED bulb in the upper trim Silverados, light output wise.

I drove a 2016 Silverado LT with the HID's and I believe the LED has a brighter light output than the HID in the LT. I have never had a problem with snow or ice build up on my truck with the LED headlights in my truck since I picked it up in March.

The 2016 1500 LTZ and High Country Silverado's do have the LED headlights with the LED DRL'S and turn signals. I drove a 2016 Silverado LT with the HID's and I believe the LED has a brighter light output than the HID in the LT. I have never had a problem with snow or ice build up on my truck with the LED headlights in my truck since I picked it up in March.

 

Just went to GM's website to double-check this. Looks like I was wrong and they are actually LED. The blue tint sure as hell looks like HID.

GM's LEDs are better than any HID I have ever owned or drove even on Mercedes Benz, heck even MB is running LED's now, I bet next is laser lights like BMW is messing with.

 

These aren't your cheap Amazon, eBay LED's

 

LED's

Instant on, no warm up needed vs HID

Run cooler, reduced heat w/ increased life expectancy (not good for guys up north with snow)

Reduced massive power requirements (this is huge power savings)

Longer life expectancy

Same brightness as a HID, you'd couldn't tell the difference of the new hi-powered LED vs HID (its all how you focus the light, go look directly into a LED beam at night of the new trucks)

Safer to work on, btw you can kill yourself if a ballast discharges into a human w/ HID.

 

The LED headlamps are fully sealed units, you cant just pop the back off and swap bulbs, In dealerships OEM they are replaced as an entire unit/assembly.

 

Side note, only on the rear LED tail lamps is the reverse light a standard bulb 2x, along with the Center High Mounted Stop Lamps (CHMSL) 3x and License plate bulbs 2x I swapped those 7 bulbs for LED's.

 

Lastly everyone is complaining about the light cutting out above top (its designed this way to not blind oncoming traffic, and widen the light output), its the projector housing that's cutting the light, not the bulb. HID units use the same/similar type of projector housing it does the same thing.

Thanks bud for the informative HID/LED stuff. Note: when I put my LED Brights on it's almost too much and think damn this out of control I better turn this crap off it's like 4times the amount of the regular beams......jeeesh that should work, ya think?

    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions? 
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!  
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?. 
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.
