Ordering Question For The Experts

Howdy Folks,

I'm new to the forum and came here because the community looks to be very active and informative. Sorry about coming-off like a bull in a China shop out of the gates, but I have a question that I could really use some advice on.

A dealership put my name on a 2017 Silverado 6.2L Midnight Edition that they ordered as "Retail Stock" in June. Not sure though what they mean by "out my name on" though. It might just be a nod nod wink wink kind of thing. They do know me because I've purchased about 7 vehicles from them. In the GM system the order is listed as TRE - Retail Stock. I asked if I needed to put down a deposit or sign a buyer order and they told me that it wasn't necessary. They said "if you do not buy it someone else will quickly". As you know the 6.2Ls go very quickly. The issue is that several of the 2017 5.3Ls that they ordered have already been scheduled for production, but no movement on the 6.2L model. I asked if putting down a deposit on it would expedite the order, but they never gave me a direct answer.

In your experience, is there anything that I should be concerned about with ordering the 6.2L? Is it constantly on constraint? Does a Retail Stock unit sit secondary to Customer Orders? I'm just curious what to expect.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to participating in the community here!

Regards,

OB

The 6.2 was on constraint quite a bit in 2016.

Usually they want to produce a handful of trucks to get out to dealers and they normally will be the average selling trucks (models, 5.3 engines, colors). Once they get through this run of the initial 2017 production they should switch over. Shouldnt take to long unless there are other constraints with your order.

Putting down a deposit will not expedite this proces. Some dealers ask for a deposit some dont, people have many opinions of this. I have always done this in good faith towards the dealer. Usually $200-500 and it is fully refundable. Again this doesnt get an order processed any quicker by GM.

Enjoy the wait, be patient it will pay off in the end

I had originally ordered a 2016 6.2 on April 25th. After 7 weeks it didn't move and the dealer informed me that it wouldn't be built as a 2016. They reordered it as a 2017 on June 11th. In the GM system it shows SRE - Retail Sold. It already has a target production week of 7-25-16.

Thank you Ryan.

One more question, sir: in the GM Workbench system it shows it as "Peliminery Order Detail" and has a six-digit code associated with it like #623HYT. Is this different from a regular order? I wonder if this means that the order is waiting in a queue. Just curious.

Awesome! I heard back from my dealer today and my order went to #3000 status. It's moving along slowly....not entirely sure what "3000 status" means but I'll have to Google it and check it out.

The week of the 25th seems to be a busy week for 6.2Ls from what I have seen and heard.

Whether true or not, my dealer told me that customer orders get priority over retail stock. Putting your name on it marks it as a customer order and would then make it move through the system faster, if that info was true.

It just shows in the system as a sold order vs dealer inventory

Here are the event codes I don't think they have changed

putting a deposit does not expedite the order - ordering one for you and you alone is a little different you will get specific codes along the way telling you where it is in the process.

By "putting your name on it" means they have reserved it for you. I would call and ask if you could leave a deposit lockin git up - only if it hasnt been built it has NO VIN yet

Thanks for all of the information folks. It's been helpful.

They told me the same thing about the deposit. It wouldn't make it appear any faster. The sales manager said that the fastest way to get it was to mark it as a "Retail Unit - Sold". I guess that back in early June they put in an order for a bunch of 2017s, so they were already working their way through the system.

I asked about the deposit and they said no need. They basically said, "You're name is on the unit and you get first crack at it when it rolls off the truck. If you don't buy it then it will sell to someone else within a week. But we marked it as a sold unit and are giving you first dibs." They are pretty accurate about the week sales time frame. The last two 6.2Ls that they had come in lasted less than 48-hours. Big market for those on the East Coast.

Might have something to do with saving the planet..........larger engines being produced sporadically and in limited numbers to assure that the manufacturer meets fleet mpg goal/limit for the model year.
