Should GM Maintain the Column Shifter on Next Gen?

Column shifter for me! As mentioned it frees up a lot of space and I do not like push buttons.

I remember the old days when I was a kid there was a Dodge with push buttons to shift the car. Now we are headed back to it.  Bottom line as long as things work properly i don't think the new style will be that bad. Just have to get use to it. I thinking of getting a 2022 Silverado or Sierra but need to see the pics of what outside and inside look like. I want a specific build. Hope i can get pics of the 22s look before cutoff  special build date.

 

I am not a techy type but have to learn to keep up with the times. Just got my 1st NON flip phone. lol

Keep the column shifter but wrap it in some leather. No more keys. We have a Durango and I still can’t get use to that shifter knob!!!

I may be the odd man out here, but really prefer a console floor shifter to column despite the loss of console space. To me, it just looks and feels more sporty and less like grandpa's old car.

The column shift frees up a lot of room and is much more positive than the knob.  Also, the knob is a reach to grab whereas the column is within reach. vidmate insta saver

Yes, not impressed only a console shift with the buckets.  Huge waste.

I have a 2019 GMC Sierra At4, it has the push start and column shift. It would take a long time to get use to a vehicle without a column shift as every truck I owned had one. Plus I don't trust electronics, they have a tendency to fail. Same as the push start which took a little bit to get use too. The auto stop/start can be a pain in the butt at times.

I like having a key ignition as a backup, with the push start their is no backup that I know of.

That's funny.  There are a whole bunch of electronic components that have to work right, for even your key ignition vehicle to run, for most vehicles made in the last 20 years or more.  And what is the key ignition the "backup" for, that a push-button start wouldn't be?

Start button and key and remote fob all do the same thing.

 

They three all just send a 'start request' to the computers -- and the computers manage the whole start process.

No need to hold the key or button 'til it starts -- just 'bump and release'.

 

Keyed GM's have been this way for many years.

To me if they are going to put the shifter in the center console, may as well offer a 6sp manual and third pedal.

I enjoyed my 1993 GMC Sonoma 4x4 with the 4.3 and 5sp.

The new console shift is very meh to me. I’m OK with a column shifter but I get flashbacks of 3 on the tree 

 

What I really do like is the dial type gear selector that Ram puts on the dash. That ends up giving you massive amounts of storage space in the center console and Ram does a great job of giving you a lot of flexibility with that space. I wouldn’t mind one bit if Chevy stole that idea.

 

Ford, almost gets it right with their folding console shifter. Giving customers that folding workspace is genius IMO but again the shifter is sacrificing what could be some very useful storage space.

i wish GM woul put column shifts back on cars too, I hate the center shifter for an automatic, and bring back bench seats too...
