2016 Sierra 2500 HD tire pressure

I was wondering if dropping tire pressure when not towing would improve the ride. Any doing this ?

Sure. Many of us do it. I run 55 psi all the way around all the time when not hauling or towing heavy. Some run lower than that. Same principle that commercial semi trucks use.... base tire PSI on weight of loading. At least the commercial tire folks have recommended charts to do this and make it easier to get proper inflation for load. The auto and pickup OEM's are two dimensional and think everyone is at max gross all the time. Their recommended pressures are for max gross loading, not empty or light loading.

 

As a side note, I believe that mpg is slightly improved and tire wear reduced when running lower pressures when empty. Less tire hop on road bumps which equates to less micro braking and adjustments made via the anti-slip electronics. Tires are designed to help absorb road shock. Too high of inflation for the load and they cannot do that well and pass the shock onto the suspension components. From a safety standpoint, having the proper inflation for the load, in this case lower than OEM recommend when empty, also improves overall handling and braking.

I don't even worry about the TPMS having a fit. I dismiss the warnings in the DIC and only concern myself with the tire inflation. I ignore the TPMS just like I ignore the seat belt warning crap when I am driving around the farm property. The light on the dash doesn't concern me one bit. More of a comedy moment for me to remember how lame the thinking is at the OEM and their one size fits all mentality.

With a Tech 2 you can change the threshold as to what PSI the TPMS light goes off, a local dealer did it for free on my truck

Finding one that actually knows what that means is difficult in this area. My selling dealer actually understood what I wanted, but wouldn't do it for legality reasons. Being an employee wasn't an advantage in that instance.

I don't really care, eventually I'll find someone that can and will do it, I have enough gm tech acquaintances, it's just not super high on my list right now. I just ignore the light.

I run mine around 57-60 during the winter months and add about 300 pounds of sand tubes in the bed. The ride improves nicely.

 

During the "towing season" I run around 65 in the fronts and 70-75 out back.

I run mine at 50 all around. That trips the rear but not the front. I wish I could get rid of that whole system, I just dismiss it too. I don't care if it eats my tires, the sooner they go the better, no more pizza cutter tires.

Yeah you can go down to 50 PSI on the fronts and 60 on the rear. I assume maybe it can dip briefly below that because of cold and not set it off also. Haven't experimented with it too much yet. But I've been running 50 front and 60 rear. Hoping it doesn't cause tire wear issues but at 5,000 miles it seems fine.

About same here for 12 years & 3 generations - all good - I get about 70,000 miles out of my OEM Mich LTX2 Tires, - with about 250 lbs in the bed year round - good ride & decent tire wear with rotations

Is TPMS still optional or not required on 3500HD trucks? SRW and DRW. It used to be on GMT900 platform.

No Available on 3500 -iirc - no sure if you can add it by reprograming and adding sensors

    • I have A 2020 1500 5.3 8 speed. LTZ. Transmission problems since 60,000 miles. Started when I go to store in morning to get my morning coffee before work leave truck running get back in put it in drive/ rev no movement step on gas a little slams into gear. Put in neutral step on gas little shake then put in gear and gose.  Shut truck off start .. ok now at stop light stop truck after a few seconds feel a little kick if that doesn’t happen stuck in 3/4 gear shut truck off wait few seconds and start usually ok again. If you down shift manually ok as long as you get into 1st before stop. If not it kicks . I WANT A NEW TRANSMISSION. Now I want a new truck it just hit 80,000 IDK IF ILL BUY CHEVY CAUSE THEY STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM AND REFUSE TO RECALL . Oh I’ve changed the fluid and filter 3 times now. And yes used mobile 1 not ac/delco cause it’s not meeting the requirements that mobile is did use ac/delco filter

    • I'm looking at carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand and lumbar fusion. 
    • While waiting for parts I have been working on installing the AC compressor, new accumulator, and orifice tube. Also changed out the high side ball valve (original). The orifice tube that was in there wasn't too bad. Slightly dirty, a little bit of junk, but not blocked. Glad I changed it out.   The accumulator, which should have been a 5 minute job, may have just burned $50. Put some PAG in it, wrote the date and mileage on the side, fresh o-rings and gooey'd up the threads and rings with Nylog. Got everything connected and snugged and was going to vacuum down the system, and....   My manifold gauge won't fit on the port. It's not an R12 service port. It LOOKS like an R134 service port but the diameter is a hair too large. There's a sticker on the accumulator that says it's designed to be used with R12 and R134a systems only. So it's not R1234yf. Even if I reduced the diameter slightly with a file, the shoulder on the port is too large so the quick-connect valve won't lock on. I'm stumped. It's going back, and 50/50 on if they'll give me a refund.   Also, I did a fuel pressure test.... Key on, the gauge spikes to about 60psi and quickly bleeds off, like 2psi per second. The fuel isn't going into the plenum, no smell, starts fine, so I'm guessing there's a bad check valve in the pump and the fuel is just draining back into the tank. oh, hell. But, it shouldn't be a problem, pump primes just fine and the truck starts right up. It just means I can't really ever use fuel pressure to verify a leak at the injector or intake.
    • Got this yesterday out of nowhere. Truck is a 25',6.6 gasser with 8k miles.  Only semi anomaly is that the truck had been sitting, uncranked for 6 days. Elec Stability Control showed immediately upon cranking, not while driving. No drivability issues, just the message. Battery didn't seem to be weak when cranking over.  I drove it, killed it, let it sit a few hrs with no avail.  Truck is 100% stock. No damage.
