Homelink operational with the truck off

I have a 2015 GMC 1500 and the other day I decided to set up the homelink garage door opener. I was quite surprised to find that it is functional with the truck off and the key out. I have 2 other cars with built in garage door openers and they are non-functional when the car off. I thought that was the whole idea behind having them built in. Then if someone opens your truck they would not be able to open up the garage door and gain access to your home if the truck is parked outside. Don't get me wrong I still love the truck it just surprised me this is the way GM set it up.

There is a writeup somewhere to show how to rewire the homelink.

I just used a test light to find the main power to it and then wired it to a "key on" source that was already in the homelink console.

Takes about 5 minutes.

Homelink has been active in GM vehicles for as long as I can remember while the key is off, same way for Ford as well. Our Audi was the first car we bought that the homelink doesn't work once the car is off.

 

Personally I don't worry about it, our cars never park outside so it is a moot issue for us.

Yeah, I was kinda surprised to see it functional with the ignition off as well. I'll have to see if I can find that write up as I'd rather it was NOT functional when the truck is off.

I wish mine worked well enough to worry about it. My range sucks.

Other than that I don't see the problem, it's designed to function like a garage door opener.

Mine is the same way. I have to be in the driveway almost to the door to get it to open the doors. On other vehicles, I can hit the button early enough that I can drive up the driveway and pull straight into the garage with out stopping to wait on the door. Just a little thing.

Ram shuts off the homelink when the doors are locked and factory alarm is armed, my wife's old BMW used to shut the homelink off with the ignition, her new Acura does not.

 

The way Chrysler does it was the best, my wife used to shut the car off and then she couldnt close the garage door, had to turn the ignition back on to close the garage door.

 

GM really should have a two position fuse to make opener shut off for people that park outside, or do it the way the Rams do.

Except you can remove a garage door opener from the cab when security may be an issue.

This is why I lock my doors before I go into the house. It is now a habit.

My truck does not have the homelink but my Jeep GC does and I do know it will open the garage doors with the jeep turned off.  I have been concerned for the last 5 years (parked outside) that someone could break in and open the door but it seems some of you with other Chrysler products say it won't open with the doors locked and alarmed.  Will have to try it when I get home this evening.  My truck on the other hand has the garage door opener in the little storage place in the lower dash so anybody can break in and open my garage door.
