Bumpers -_-

Okay so what are some good heavy duty bumper brands?

I was ripping a stump out the ground and the strap snapped and a shackle flew back and cracked my bumper cap. ( plastic color matched flimsy thing between grille and bumper )

Soooo I am looking for advice, should I replace the bumper? And get a heavy duty one. Which will be waaaaay more expensive. Or should I just replace the cap? Which I'm

Thinking will come right out at 200$ repair.

I'm just wondering which would be a better move?

I dunno man I guess if you like the heavy duty ones and foresee beating it up then I'd make that investment but if this was like a one time freak accident and you don't have much use for a heavy duty one then I'd probably just replace the cap

Road Armor was one of the best at one point. Do you have a picture of the damage?

This is entirely your decision based on your needs and circumstances. If you are planning to keep your truck for awhile and use it to work hard then a custom bumper may save you money and aggravation over the long term. All through the 70's and 80's when I lived in rural northern areas in Canada I had heavy custom front and rear bumpers on my pickups. Now that I don't work my pickup, I prefer the looks of stock bumpers and the inherent collision protection. (Bumpers that don't have any "give" can really hurt in a major impact!)

Here's the damage. My actual bumper is line x.

Which is awesome but this is also why I'm asking what should I do?

Would a heavy duty bumper look better ehhh?

Honestly I have to agree that it was just an accident. If that filler piece is all that got damaged then just replace it. By the way, probably should have used the rear hitch and not the front tow hooks to pull the stump.

Yeah well I'm

Glad I used the front of that shackle came off and hit my tail gate a lot more damage.

Anyone have an idea how much this repair would cost?

A tow strap is made out of nylon and a recovery strap is made our of polyester. They are not interchangeable. A tow strap is like a lifting strap. It should not stretch out and build up/store up energy.

Also, all shackles are not manufactured with the same processes. nowadays there's no reason to use a metal shackle. Soft Shackles like offered by Bubba Rope are MUCH stronger than metal shackles. And of your using the correct strap, nothing can fly back.

You may invest in a winch with synthetic winch line. Slow controlled pulling is always safer than wild, uncontrolled jerking off a stump ore a vehicle. With a snatch block you can double your winch's pulling power, of course this cuts your line speed in half.

Good luck on your search for the right solution for your needs.

i think most aftermarket bumpers still use the valence (that is what it is called, the one under is air dam) on the 1500's. the HD do not have one so if you were looking at a pic thinking it would not be needed. chances are it was a pic of an HD.

think your stuck buying a new one. they come unpainted.

Yeah I'll need to buy something else for recovery. That tow strap just did a poor job.

I'll prolly need to buy a chain and a hook hitch.

The valance I could paint....or should I spray it with the line x also? It might look funny. Ideas on that guys?

I really appreciate all the input. Will be making the decision in the morning!

I mean, you've got a few things to look at, do you want the OEM look or the offroad aggressive look? Both are gonna cost money but if you want an off-road bumper you've got plenty of options.

I would get a recovery strap, it's a lot safer if it breaks over if a chain breaks. I have both, but if you only want to buy 1 then get the recovery strap. As for the hook receiver, I actually made my own shackle receiver from Tractor Supple. Just bought a receiver for a 1 1/2" shank ball and the biggest shackle they had which had a 1" pin. So to take the slop out I bought a little sleeve that was perfect so the shackle sits perfectly vertical. I just prefer a big shackle over a hook since it's closed. If you notice it seems like most manufacturers are using closed tow hooks and and not actual hooks anymore. You can buy a receiver with a shackle but I believe the one I made is stronger.

I'm not sure what my strap is made of, but being a 4" wide 30' long and with a 30,000 lb breaking strength I'm sure it's a recovery strap. I also have a chain, but not sure the rating. I want to say it's close to the strap since it's technically a logging chain. I do have that soft shackle from Bubba Rope, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I've always used regular d-ring shackle and haven't had a problem with any breaking or bending and haven't been easy on them either. I always try a soft pull, but then if I have to I'll do a snatch.

    • Curious, did anyone ever get a fix for the vibration reported here.   I have a 2024 Silverado with 6.6 duramax.   I’m noting the same vibration resonating up through the steering shaft into the steering wheel.    Best way to describe- like someone is tapping on the steering shaft/components and it’s resonating into the steering wheel.    thanks.
    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions?
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?.
