Bumpers -_-

I mean, you've got a few things to look at, do you want the OEM look or the offroad aggressive look? Both are gonna cost money but if you want an off-road bumper you've got plenty of options.

What kinda off road bumpers look good? For our trucks. Honestly. I like the road armor one but I don't really like how it says in big white letters... ROAD ARMOR lol.

I like how it has a winch and bar over the bumper. My problem

Is I don't want something that will stick out too too far.

Suggestions?

I'm not sure what my strap is made of, but being a 4" wide 30' long and with a 30,000 lb breaking strength I'm sure it's a recovery strap. I also have a chain, but not sure the rating. I want to say it's close to the strap since it's technically a logging chain. I do have that soft shackle from Bubba Rope, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I've always used regular d-ring shackle and haven't had a problem with any breaking or bending and haven't been easy on them either. I always try a soft pull, but then if I have to I'll do a snatch.

Any brand name on your snatch rope??

PM me so I can remember to share some pics, info, pricing, etc that I've come across over the last year of looking at bumpers for our trucks.

Here's the damage. My actual bumper is line x.

Which is awesome but this is also why I'm asking what should I do?

Would a heavy duty bumper look better ehhh?

I actually like that line-x look! Unfortunately as others stated, that painted cap that got damaged gets used in most cases even if you buy an after market bumper.

Like Mike was saying it kinda depends on if you want that factory look which i think the line-x does perfectly. I'd just order a new cap (our whatever you call it).

Thanks! Yeah I love the look too haha. If I got a aftermarket bumper though I will prolly line x it also.

I have two options I'm looking at. I'll share some pics.

This is kinda the look I'm thinking in terms of after market bumpers.

This guy has a 2500. If I repair the bumper cap thing, then I was toying with putting lights on like he has on the front.

What do you guys like?

I don't like snatch straps... No "if", it's a question of when something breaks. IMO if you're having to jerk something to move it, you need a bigger vehicle or a winch. It's almost always better to pull with the rear hitch if you're using a strap though.

As far as bumpers, there are a lot out there. For me, radiator protection is #1. Figure out what's important to you, and go from there. There are mounts available to attach a winch within the stock bumper, too.

canadian_pipeliner has a 2500, you can tell by the fact the grill touched the front bumper. Also, it's just a standard bumper that he has line-xed. Nothing wrong with it, in fact I love the look, but not aftermarket.

As has been said before most (that I've seen anyway) use that part between the grill and bumper so you'll likely need to replace it no matter what. You could buy a new one and have it line-xed. May give you a bit more protection but realistically it sounds like you may have just had a "freak" accident by not properly using the equipment. Not dis to you but assuming you don't try it again it's unlikely this would happen in the future.

That said if you want a new aftermarket bumper go with it!

Yeah well I'm

Glad I used the front of that shackle came off and hit my tail gate a lot more damage.

Anyone have an idea how much this repair would cost?

You just got lucky that it only damaged that filler piece. I'd rather damage the tailgate than damage the grille and possibly the radiator.

Yeah his truck is pretty awesome. My bumpers are awesome too.

I had a thread on here asking if it would look weird to have my fender flares line x also to flow into the bumper but sadly no one ever gave any feed back :(

I'm thinking about line-xing my bumpers and fender flares when I get them. Personally really like the look. Even thought about line-xing the whole truck. Not sure about that yet, prob not gonna happen till its well and paid off.

    • I've been eyeing an upgrade to my tonneau cover for a bit now.  Intrigued by the BAK MX4 EZ-Lift with the torsion spring and went for the upgrade.  Thoughts and musings during unpacking, install and a few days of usage.   Once my order went into Realtruck, it took about 4 days to ship.  Unfortunately, FedEx Ground destroyed the box and contents and it was unusable upon receipt.  To Realtruck's credit, one email with pictures and an RMA was sent to me to send the first one back, and another unit was shipped out.  It arrived 3 days later, unscathed.   I opened the box and it looked like every other BAK MX4.   Biggest differences are the rails and retaining clamps, and of course the spring attached to the cover itself.     NOTE - if you are upgrading from a MX4 to the EZ-Lift, you will have to replace the rails.  The EZ-Lift rails have a notch cut in them to allow the new style retaining clamps to fit properly.  The new retaining clamps also have 2 knobs/carriage bolts and there are two tracks underneath the front panel. The strap clips are mildly different (more like the Undercover Flex clamps) in that the screws go in from the underside.  Personally I prefer these over the BAK clamps that use the nutserts that are a nuisance to install.  The remainder of the parts in the box (drain tubes, rail clamps, and bumper pads) are standard issue BAK.     I did not replace my front bed seal at the time because it seemed to be in decent shape.   BAK recommends shims on the GM trucks unless you place the clamps on the flanges about 1/3 of the way in from both the front and rear of the bed.  I shimmed the front and the middle, and initially placed the clamps equidistant.  This also turned out to be a mistake, because when I set the cover in place, the new style retaining clamps wouldn't clear the front clamp.   New style clamp inserted in the track:     And the issue which occurred because the front rail clamp was too far forward:     Once I removed the shim from the front of the bed, and slid the clamp back to the front flange, everything cleared fine.     The cover set on the rails without issue and I installed the strap clamps.  After I completed my adjustments, I pulled the pin to activate the torsion spring.  Mistake #3 on my part.  PULL THE PIN AS THE VERY VERY VERY LAST STEP!  The reason is, once you pull the pin, the torsion spring is activated.  If you have to loosen the front clamps and adjust the cover, the front panel will - by virtue of the spring, refuse to lay down.  The only way to get it to lay down so you can reinstall and tighten the clamps is to fully open the panel against the back of the cab, which will then allow the front panel of the cover to lay down and be tightened.  Not a big deal unless you haven't installed the foam pads yet (typically the last step) because minus the foam pads, you will need to place something between the frame of the cover and the back window so it doesn't get scratched.  The next time I install one I will install the foam pads before I pull the pin and activate the spring.   After using it for a few days:   The spring assist is great.  You literally can open it with one hand.  My shoulders aren't getting any younger and this was part of my motivation to swap out. The second panel latches and unlatches itself as you open and close the cover.  Neat in concept, however it took me a minute to get used to closing the cover and not hearing the "latching" sound that would tell me it was locked in place. The paddle handles are a huge upgrade and I wouldn't be surprised to see them become the standard across the Realtruck line.  They effectively eliminate the concern that a thief could coat hanger the cover open and get to the contents in the bed. I'm not sure why the very front panel on my cover has a different finish from the other 3 panels.  I have a request into Realtruck to find out if mine was not manufactured properly or if it was by design.   All in all I'm pleased.  Same level of protection, looks good, keeps stuff mostly dry (they all leak around the tailgate) and easy to install.
