Break in for 6.0L

Welcome to the the new generation of emissions controls and nannies and what not to reduce emissions and wear and tear on the drivetrain. AKA torque control and what not. You can tune much of that out with a good tune from blackbear, but be warned of the warranty side of the fence.

How many miles are on it? I think 500mile break in period be for towing. Honestly mine broke in around 1-5,000miles seemed to gain power. I am very happy with the 6.0 for what it is.

The recommended break in is 500 miles before towing if I remember correctly?

Mine took about 5k miles before it started getting better mileage.

How many miles do you have on yours? Engine wise, I followed the Camaro recommendations that GM has, so under 4k rpms, no hard accelerations, etc for 1500 miles.

Having owned an 04 and 06 HD, my 15 puts them to shame, and gets 1-2 mpg better with similar driving.

Gotta love new members who come in after the fact and then bash it like they were expecting 600hp and 600 ft lbs.

As been discussed many times before, the 6.0L is older design but has proven itself with longevity and overall performance with the 6-speed trans and 4.10 gearing having out-towed its competitors in the Ike Gauntlet challenges.

When I got my 2015 I thought at first my 04 was stronger also. But... once I put some miles on the 15 and hooked up the 5th wheel it only took a few miles to realize this thing has a lot more pull. I think the idea of revving the engine higher has some believing it is weaker? The L96 likes to be revved. Get it in the power band and it will perform.

This was a test drive. Truck has 55 miles on it. The truck im comparing it to is a 06 1500hd 373 gears 35" tires. I'm not expecting 600hp, just a bit more than my old 6.0L that ran great. I'd like to think it would take some time to break in but, terrible fuel mileage and poor performance not what I expected. Great truck other than that. I plan to test drive one more 6.0 and try a Diesel too. Laura Gmc.

Don't drive a dmax unless you want to own one.

Double the torque of the gasser and it's available from 1600 rpm an up. There is no comparison.

I know that's what I told mysef, don't do it. I would like the power of the dmax, just not the cost when it breaks. I was fond of my 6.0l but 11 mpg mixed city and highway sucked.

Drive another 6.0. There must have been something wrong with the first one. The new 6.0/6l80/4:10 should run circles around your current setup. The accelerator is computer controlled, so it may feel a bit delayed, compared to your old truck....but the new drive train is a whole lot stronger.

Thanks for all the input guys. Decided to test drive one more 6.0L, night and day difference from the first I drove. The second one hands down had better mpg and the power was a bit more. I go Wednesday to pick it up. I'd like to get a tune for it but, I'll wait and enjoy it being under warranty. I will start a new thread and post pics.

So I just bought the 2016 2500 Midnight Edition and I'm new to the Chevy truck arena as well. I have a question that might be rather silly, but I'm going to throw it out there anyways. Are all 2500 series trucks HD? I ask this because it does not say HD on my window sticker, but when searching for some aftermarket items, one of the options is: 2500 or 2500HD.

If it's a new one, then yes, if it's a 2500 or 3500 it's automatically a HD. In the early 2000's, GM made some 1500HD's and non-HD 2500's, that we're a cross between the two (heavier springs and 8 lug axles, but lighter frames), but now all 2500's are HD's. And just FYI, your bolt pattern is 8x180.

Edit: Read your first post too quickly, and thought you said aftermarket rims...not just items. But, I'll leave the bolt pattern there in case someone else is wondering, haha.

I'm thinking the HDs were introduced in 2001. I ordered my 1st 3/4 ton in 2000 & the HDs weren't available.
