Well I developed an issue this past Wednesday. After filling up the truck she I went to start it up it wouldn't. Acted like it was starting. All the dash lights came on. After a few mins/tries it started. Has happened 3 straight times now. Every time after it has started fine. Here is a video. Also if I give it gas (which i did in the video) it will start faster

 

Thoughts? I did replace a few of the Evap system parts due to some codes. No codes with this issue

I think you have a sensor that is going bad. TPS maybe being it starts faster when throttle is pushed. Fuel pressure? :happysad:

Can you hear the pump run if you just turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine? You will need to be in a very quiet environment to hear it. If your fuel pump is going out sometimes multiple key try's will cause it to work for a few times (VERY FEW) Better go check this right now!

I know what your doing. This is all part of your plan to talk the wife into letting you order a 2018 model. lol So, this only happens when you run the tank low and then fill up? Do you fill it up to where it won't hold another drop? What about trying to run it empty and then put only 20 bucks worth in it? The reason I ask is my old body style 2007 did something similar to this and I could never completely fill up the tank, always had to stop a little short. Never did find out what it was before I traded for the new 2007's when they came out.

From the video there was a "low battery" message on the dic and after you started the volt meter came up very slow, could be the battery because cycling the key kinda zaps the battery (wakes up) and giving you enough power to start.

 

Now that I listened to the video again I did hear the motor turning over which again cycling the key will let the fuel pump build pressure, sounds like your fuel pump is on the way out.

She was in the truck the second time it happened and her words "maybe you do need a new truck" lol

 

It has happened at various levels. The first time I only put in about 6-7 gallons (filling up before we left this weekend). The second fillup was .5-3/4 of a tank. The last fillup was 21 gallons.

 

The battery is just about a year old. Truck turns over fine. If it was the fuel pump going bad I could see this happening every time. What I have read is it is due to the evap system issues?

 

Earlier this year I replaced the evap emission vent valve solenoid (code 0449) and the vapor canister purge valve (0442 and 0445 codes)

Purge valve going bad.

 

It was changed 6 months (5K miles) ago. HMMM

The purge valve is cheap, might be worth trying...

 

Checking fuel pressure would be what I'd try first though. With colder temps and E85 it wouldn't take much of a pressure drop to cause starting issues.

Chances are the fuel pump is good since it runs fine after firing back up, but its worth checking the pressure to be sure. I had the purge valve issue on a Grand Prix. Took a long time before it finally set a code. It was hard to start after fueling, after a few months, it would miss after it fired up after fueling for less than a minute. It only cost about 25 bucks for one from O’Reilly.

Even though you replaced it a few months back. it might be shot especially if it was from Auto Zone or another crappy auto parts store.

It was an OEM ad deodorant version. It was pretty cheap and easy to replace most likely start there

If your purge valve sticks open all the fumes are forced to the plenum and your truck will act like it's flooded. Put pedal to the metal and it should start right up. ( Release pedal at this time or you will really need a new truck :D )

P0496 Chevrolet Description The evaporative emission (EVAP) control system limits fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. Fuel tank vapors are allowed to move from the fuel tank, due to pressure in the tank, through the vapor pipe, into the EVAP canister. Carbon in the canister absorbs and stores the fuel vapors. Excess pressure is vented through the vent line and EVAP vent solenoid to the atmosphere. The EVAP canister stores the fuel vapors until the engine is able to use them. At an appropriate time, the PCM will command the EVAP purge valve open, allowing engine vacuum to be applied to the EVAP canister. With the EVAP vent valve open, fresh air will be drawn through the valve and vent line to the EVAP canister. Fresh air is drawn through the canister, pulling fuel vapors from the carbon. The air/fuel vapor mixture continues through the EVAP purge pipe and EVAP purge valve into the intake manifold to be consumed during normal combustion. The EVAP system requires the PCM be able to detect a leak as small as 0.040 inch in the EVAP system. The PCM uses several tests to determine if the EVAP system is leaking.

Possible causes - Faulty EVAP Canister Vent Valve - Faulty EVAP Canister Purge valve - Plugged EVAP canister condition - Faulty EVAP Pressure Sensor - EVAP Canister Vent Valve harness is open or shorted - EVAP Canister Vent Valve circuit poor electrical connection

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
